Geo: 69.6796, 18.9081Time Check: 12:39. We are sitting in Tromso Airport waiting for our flight to Oslo and then onto London landing at 18:30.Summary: I know we could have flown here from Gatwick in about 3 hours........BUT why miss out on all the fun!Yes we did see the Northern Lights......yesterday 4 times!!!!. I had packed my welding googles just in case......they were both elusive and enigmatic. I guess too much is made of them to be frank and the pictures you see on the web are photo shopped. However take a peek at my photo....The Norwegians are both friendly and nothing was too much bother. They are fiercely proud of their Country and quite rightly so........ It's has been hard work at times but we have seen a lot and met all sorts of really decent ... read more

Geo: 62.7298, 7.2679RECAP: 30th DecFortunately, we soon regained our sea legs and spent an interesting spell ashore in Alesund. A pretty settlement with a neat little display of winter cabbages in each flower container. We trudged about the city centre for a couple of hours and return to the ship.Confusion at Dinner: Apparently, each cabin has a "SET PLACE" to sit at dinner. I plonk myself down on the only table for "2" and within seconds (after tucking into my bread roll) a "po" faced couple pitch up looking indignant - you are sitting at "OUR TABLE"......anyone would would have though we had insulted the Captain!.........We are virtually frog marched off by "STAFF" to a table for "4" nearby....despite Cathy grabbing handfulls of paperwork and squeaking........"WHERE DOES IT SAY WE HAVE ALLOCATED SEATING ON THIS ... read more

Geo: 62.4709, 6.15463Time Check: 0705Location: Just docking at a small town Maloy one of the most westerly points in Norway where we will be for 15 minutes . I am looking out of our porthole looking at the harbour lights and it is pitch black. A few seagulls fly around the bow. We set sail from Bergen last night at 22:30hrs. Tucked up in our little bunks in cabin 605 after a substantial meal of Reindeer Sausage and mashed potato we were soon snoozing away well before the champagne departure drinks reception at 2200hrs!!!!! we did however wake up-just before 'take off' to watch the wharf disappear behind us and the glittering skyline of Bergen twinkled in the distance. A couple of bridges later we retreated back to our cozy duvet snooze-land.The Nordkapp: My only recent ... read more

Geo: 60.3964, 5.32535Time Check: 0715 - still in bed. An unusual state of affairs you might remark BUT we have been on the go for the last 3 days and to be frank, I am still digesting last nights Norwegian Christmas Dinner. Cathy was lured into this choice in a nearby restaurant which had a cosy wooden feel BUT sadly did not live up to expectations. Our Christmas Dinner turned out to be a pile of over cooked lamb and pork chops with prunes, mashed parsnips and a pile of bullet proof crackling. OK not so bad you may say, but with a price tag of £40 per head was well below par..........things here ain't cheap as typified by a minimum cab fare of about £20 to go two blocks........WEATHER SUMARY: -3C and very very snowy. ... read more

We are heading off on a 6 hour journey to the scenic West Coast for 2 nights before catching the Hurtegruten Working Boat north through the rugged Fiords to Tromso which is located above the Arctic Circle.Time Check: 0740...mild panic as our train is not showing on the ... read more

Geo: 59.9138, 10.7387ALARM 0515: Up, showered, packed and out into the early crisp morning air! Its -5C and pitch black. Our taxi takes about 10 minutes to reach the Central Station. A few "down and outs 'share a can of Carlesberg whilst chirpy Chinese types trundle their trolly suitcases (with impossibly tiny luggage) to catch a train to the Airport and home to Shanghai or Seoul . We nibble on our hotel packed breakfast waiting for the 0732 Train to Gothenburg........a distance of some 315km. We will arrive at 11:30am.....transfer to a Norweigan train which departs at 1300hrs and will take another 4:52 to reach Oslo.0750: As dawn breaks with a blue and orange glow in the East, our train glides out of Copenhagen Central Station. Geo: 55.6819, 12.5934Happy Christmas!.......Wonderful Copenhagen! Well it's a White Christmas folks. The snow and sub zero temperatures struck last night. We are staying in a converted wharf warehouse on the waterfront. Heavy oak beams and walls 5 feet thick.......warm cosy and very very cool! What comes to mind instantly when you think of Denmark???.......Lurpack.......Bacon.......Pastries...........England 1 - Denmark 1...........Borgen???Well in the "HIP" bar last night we settled into "local cool life".......As The local Danes were sipping on "TUBORG" I surveyed the scene.....clean cut .....chic and savvy. Their English is better then ours and they are friendly and hospitable. I'm already a convert to their suave and sophisticated understated "techno trouser" life style. Geo: 51.4736, -0.491135Status Report: 1702 hrs Sofitel Hotel T5 Room 5227. Ah those magical words at reception.... "because it's Christmas and you are obviously serious international travellers we have upgraded your room Mr Hillman!" Yabadaba Do! - ........to be frank, Sofitel Rooms are pretty good even at the base level, so it is not easy to spot the differences. A cursory glance reveals an extra tub chair (with flip out foot rests) - higher quality slipperettes..........bigger towels......."manly" bathrobe.....pen (not functioning) and extra perimeter IT points for those important business types with two laptops ......."oh this is the life" as I wrestle with the BA on-line check in.
