Another day, another National Trust property! This time we headed off for Chirk Castle. The castle is just over the border in Wales so we re-traced our route from Thursday, but only travelled as far as Chirk today. We probably could have visited Chirk Castle on our way home yesterday, but we knew the weather forecast was much better for today so that seemed a better proposition. Hmmn, as we left Stalybridge it was very overcast and by the time we reached the motorway it was raining! Still the forecasters promised there would be better weather by late morning or early afternoon so we optimistically continued on our way. They got it right! By the time we were pulling into the car park at Chirk Castle there was blue sky and the sun was shining. It ... read more

On a day that had dawned grey and drizzly it was time to leave Shrewsbury and head back to Stalybridge. On the way to retrieve the car from the long stay car park we popped into a shop around in the Dogpole area of Shrewsbury to price some ‘Solar Pal’ novelty characters that we saw in the window of the local tattoo and body piercing parlour yesterday. You know, the silly toys that have a small solar panel so that they jiggle around when the sun (or artificial) light falls on it?Kerry is a big fan of these particular characters, and they weren’t very expensive, so we bought all three in the set for Kerry to put on her desk at work. I can’t name them here in the (albeit unlikely) event that Kerry actually reads ... read more

This morning Bernie and I drove down to Stokesay Castle in the small town of Craven Arms. This was yet another opportunity to use our English Heritage OVP. Today we saved ourselves another £8.30 each. The castle is right beside the St John the Baptist Church. Always keen to photograph atmospheric old churches we wandered into the churchyard first to take a few photos of the church and shots of Stokesay Castle with old gravestones in the foreground. After a circuit of the church we went back out into the lane to walk along to the castle entrance ... or so we thought. In fact, all we found down the lane was the private driveway into the local farm. We strolled back into the churchyard and found that the entry to the castle was via a ... read more

Well, today we went to see the world famous Iron Bridge near Telford in Shropshire. We knew that we would not be able to see much because Bernie stumbled across this information on the English Heritage website a couple of nights ago: Please note that we’re carrying out vital conservation work on the bridge. This means we’ve had to put much of it under cover. But we’ve built a walkway alongside the bridge to give you an opportunity to see the work as it happens and enjoy a rare perspective of this landmark monument. The walkway is free to access and open from 10am-4pm (last entry 3.30pm). The website also advised that entry to the bridge is free from April to September 2018. I suppose it wouldn’t be very good public relations to charge people to ... read more

Today we explored Shrewsbury. It is such a photogenic town with its picturesque half-timbered buildings and dramatic abbeys, cathedrals and churches not to mention an attractive bridge or two! We had only just started out this morning when we glimpsed St Mary’s Church appearing to perch atop St Alkmund’s Church when we looked up Fish Street from High Street. With a row of colourful planter boxes on the fence in between it looked beautiful. We continued down towards the Abbey Foregate past some of the multitude of half-timbered buildings. It was hard not to photograph every single one of them! We crossed English Bridge and made our way to Shrewsbury Abbey. The Abbey was founded as a Benedictine Monastery by Roger de Montgomery in 1083 on the site of an existing Saxon church. It was substantially ... read more

This morning we packed the car to head down to Shropshire for a few days. With the accommodation in Shrewsbury pre-booked on the Internet weeks ago we were locked into visiting Shropshire despite Bernie learning last night that the Iron Bridge, the first iron bridge in the world, that he particularly wanted to visit, is currently all wrapped up for conservation works! One evening, a day or so after we arrived, we watched a documentary on the Iron Bridge that Albert had recorded. The documentary also mentioned the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (pronounced Pont - ker - sulth - tay) that was completed in 1805 using the new cast iron techniques that had been used for the first time during the construction of the Iron Bridge that was opened in 1791. Although we had driven past the aqueduct ... read more

Out and about again today, this time to Rufford Old Hall (NT) in Lancashire. Siri took as around the south of Greater Manchester this morning onto the M60 before guiding us onto the M56. From the M56 we switched to the M6 heading north as far as Interchange 27. Leaving the motorway we headed off into the countryside on the A5209, B5246 and A59 to the small village of Rufford. Using our Australian National Trust cards to enter Rufford Old Hall we saved ourselves another £7.50 each! Built in the 1530s Rufford Old Hall is one of Lancashire’s finest Tudor buildings. Built during the reign of Henry VIII, it was originally built to an H-plan for Sir Robert Hesketh. Apparently this was the thing to do at the time, you built your grand manor laid out ... read more

This morning we headed towards Salford again, this time to visit the intu Trafford Centre which is the third largest shopping centre in the UK. We were sort of looking for some new waterproof walking shoes for me so had hoped to find a few of the outdoor stores represented here. Unfortunately, the only outdoor shop in the centre is The North Face and they didn’t have much in the way of footwear. We did, however, find something a bit more interesting than sandwiches for lunch sampling burritos today from Barburrito. The food court area had very subdued lighting and a blue, cloudy sky painted on the ceiling. It reminded us of being in a casino in Las Vegas more than in a shopping centre in England! Just to have some photos to post for the ... read more

This morning we filled the car to the brim with luggage for four before heading to The Kitchen in Keighley to have breakfast with Janet and Jill’s Aunty Kathleen. Janet and Jill are looking forward to going home, but will miss their family in Yorkshire very much. With several visits to this area under her belt, Janet drew on her local knowledge to suggest a couple of interesting things for us to see on the way back to Manchester. From Keighley we drove south on the A629 to Halifax to visit The Piece Hall. The Piece Hall was built as a venue for handloom weavers to sell the woollen cloth ‘pieces’ they produced. It opened on 1 January 1779 and featured 315 separate rooms, around a central open courtyard, in which the cloth merchants could store their ... read more

With the end of their holiday drawing nigh Janet and Jill have been running their food stocks down so we had to go out for breakfast this morning. What a hardship?! We’ve been having fruit, Shreddies and toast since we arrived so this morning I splurged on the pancakes with berry compote and Greek yogurt while Bernie went the full English breakfast ... without the mushrooms. Yum! Because the weather forecast for today was a bit ordinary (cloudy with showers) we decided to stay local and ride the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway which is running steam locomotives all weekend. It turns out we probably didn’t need to worry about photographing the steam train yesterday as there were to be plenty of opportunities today. The K&WVR is a five mile branch line that runs from Keighley ... read more
