Dear Blog Readers, Another week has passed and it’s been quite a surreal week to be honest. We spent the weekend recovering from our sickness and we both felt fine come Monday morning. It is currently winter vacation at our schools but the strive for excellence in the Korean educational system means that the word ‘vacation’ means ‘a time period where your son or daughter could learn more and improve immeasurably amongst his or her peers in a subject of your choosing.’ Luckily, my English winter camp has been much less time consuming than Laura’s and many of our friends here in Boeun. I have two hours a day for two weeks with some first grade students. Laura has four hours a day for three weeks and this seems to be quite common for the students ... read more

Dear Blog Readers, Happy New Year! My nephew, Jacob, is now 2 years old in Korean age even though he was born in October! Laura and I have decided that we have officially brought in 2011 in the worst possible fashion but I’ll explain more later on… Last Sunday, the temperature was dropping below -15 degrees with the wind chill and the river that flows through Boeun was completely frozen over so Laura decided to test it out with her skates. It was really good fun and the river itself is only about a foot deep so she now has a very big ice rink at her disposal without having to go to Cheongju! I forgot to mention last week that Chris made eggnog when they came round on Christmas Day. We’ve never had it before ... read more

Dear Blog Readers, Merry Christmas! Our first Christmas in Korea has been spectacular. This is not duly reflected in the size of our Christmas tree whose height can only kindly be described as stunted. Fortunately, I didn’t laugh at it too much because my laughter was exhausted when my Dad showed me the Christmas tree that they have for this year. I can only describe it in the form of a grainy photo from Skype. It’s about a foot high. Mum insists that it’s a ‘Jacob’ Christmas Tree because it will grow in sync with Jacob. Anyway, we were surprised with how many gifts and cards we had underneath our tree this year, worryingly; I think I had more presents under this tree than I did last year back in England! Coincidently, we sent our presents ... read more

Dear Blog Readers, If there is a higher being which was to give me a sign to do something during the week then it occurred on Monday. In England, the weather is usually so cold that we stop playing tennis around the end of October and start up again in April. However, in Korea, they seem to play tennis relentlessly throughout the year, although, I hadn’t heard from my tennis friends for a while so I began wracking my brains to think of the countless potential things I could have done to inadvertently offend them. I think this higher being made me think of it during the bus journey home from Wonnam on Monday which is normally an completely deserted bus winding through the villages surrounding Boeun. I was therefore surprised to walk on to a ... read more

Dear Blog Readers, I realised last week’s lacklustre attempt at a blog went relatively unnoticed so I’ll make this one a bit better. I also completely forgot to add any photos so I’ve put some on there now so maybe it will become more ‘readable’ in a round-a-bout sort of way. I’ve been in a horrific mood this weekend for no apparent reason but I hope that by writing down everything that has happened during the week that it may cause it to transpire as a culmination of events. Mum sent me a few photos of a snow-covered home, including a picture of the chickens, who are now fast becoming celebrities in the lessons. The students think ‘Marjorie, Rita and Babs’ are the funniest names ever; but then again, I find some of their names hilarious ... read more

Dear Blog Readers, I can’t believe this is the fifteenth blog already. Scarily, that means we’re nearly a third of the way through our Korean adventure. The time is truly flying by! The continued threat from the North doesn’t seem to be affecting anybody here really. Tensions are high up on the border but the average Korean doesn’t seem too bothered at the moment from what I gather. I’m still trying to determine whether it is a good thing that people around the world are more worried about Korea than the Koreans. I will try and keep this blog a short one as I’ve been told that they are turning into ‘essays’, however, the statistics that I get from this website are very encouraging so it can’t be all bad. I’m sat in a café again ... read more

Dear Blog Readers, Don’t worry! We’re still alive and we haven’t been bombed…yet! On Sunday we decided to take a trip to Songnisan which is about a 15 minute bus ride away. The car park was rammed with coaches and hoards of people descending on the surrounding mountains. It reminds me of our camping trips in England where Butler will pack for every eventuality since the Koreans dress like they’re going to climb Everest and the women still hike in high heels. I may have just insinuated that Butler wears stiletto’s whilst climbing Scarfell Pike. We didn’t do any hiking but we had a good wander around the town and got some nice food in a cosy little restaurant. We nearly got involved with the outdoor norrebang by some drunk Korean men but luckily we had ... read more

Dear Blog Readers, Thus far, it has normally took a couple of days to get going with potential events to put into the blog but 8am on Monday morning I had already had a couple of classics. Monday morning’s aren’t too bad actually here. Laura gets her most difficult lessons out of the way with early doors and I teach at Wonnam where the kids are great fun and my co-teacher, Jinny, is really good fun (she is now the proud owner of a new iPhone!). Unfortunately for Laura, the bus ride to school is a point of awkward contention since a little girl who she teaches gets the same bus and wants to sit next to her. Does she let the girl sit next to her and have a bus ride of awkward silence or ... read more

Dear Blog Readers, I fear that without a soothing ‘Angel-In-Us’ hot chocolate, the thought of Laura wasting money on some new jeans (which are now soaked due to yesterday’s torrential, but visually stunning, thunderstorm) and the comfy seats in the café that this blog won’t live up to last week’s. However, I will try my best, and I’ve jotted down a few classics this week along the way (although my notebook is no match for ‘The Weekly Update Manual’ of years gone by). Monday in Wonnam was great fun. I was worried about my ‘At The Restaurant’ lesson being a bit boring. Luckily, the students found my video clip to be hilarious and the pictures of fried spiders and jellied eels to be suitably horrendous. The activity was to create their own restaurant menu. I’d even ... read more

Dear Blog Readers, I’m sitting in a beautiful ‘Angel-in-us’ café supping on a comparatively ridiculously priced hot chocolate in what can only be described as a chalice. The girl who served me tried out her English before dropping all of my change on the floor, much to the (embarrassed) laughter of the other waitresses - gutted. I need to try and make it last though. Laura’s gone into Cheongju to buy another pair of jeans which will be exactly one inch less than the same ones she bought from the same shop last week because the extra one inch on the current ones make all the difference. I’m sure all of the women reading this are agreeing wholeheartedly with her actions whereas all the blokes will be scratching their heads and adding it to the list ... read more
