Well, I feel as if this year has been one big trip away from home. We have just returned from a weeks stay in Portugal. When the boys were young, we found this fantastic villa in Silves (old Moorish Capital of Portugal). It is owned by a couple that lived in Nailsea and my sister found the advertisement posted on the staff wall at her work place. We had never been to Portugal, so the first time was an adventure. We booked the flights independently and hired a car from the airport. We followed the directions carefully as written by Iris (the owner). The roads back then were terrible, real bone shakers and the portugese were the worse drivers ever encountered. We were on the road for about an hour and the scenery was great, the ... read more

After finishing our walk with 76 miles under our belts, the last thing I thought about was adding anything more to our time in Scotland. John and Clive had planned to climb Ben Nevis from the first time we started planning the trip, Dave also decided that if the visibility was good then he would give it a go. During our walk Sally decided she would like to do it. But I was thinking "blow that" (or words to that effect), I think we've done enough and deserved a rest....... Anyway, after wandering around the shops in Fort William on the Thursday and seeing all the souvenirs of Ben Nevis and getting the atmosphere of the place, I just thought we're here, I just know I'm going to regret it if I don't give it a ... read more

Yahoo!!!!! Finally finished this afternoon at 2.30pm after walking 74 miles!!! We all feel very proud of ourselves. Between us all we've got a few blisters and aches and pains, but on the whole we are all in one piece After we left Alastair in Drumnadroichit, we continued to climb many hills, but the views were spectacular as you will see from the photos. We walked through pine forests and had wonderful views of Loch Ness again. It really is a view that you would not believe unless you see it for yourselves. We can certainly give everyone lots of advise and good B & Bs to stay in on the way. There were lots of wonderful places for us to stop and brew up with views that you have just seen on postcards and in ... read more

Arrived safely on Friday after a long delay sat on the runway in Bristol!! Inverness is very pretty, but it was quite cold. We managed to walk 9 miles out of Inverness that day which we were really pleased with. We walked through forestry which was amazing. We pitched up camp on the side of the road waiting for a taxi at the end of the day and hardly saw a car pass us. We felt like we were out in the wilderness. Tracey our taxi driver that picked us up from the airport was a welcome sight coming over the hills as we were freezing sat there on the verge, even with our kettles whistling away. The next morning after a wonderful breakfast we were collected by Tracey again and taken back to the spot ... read more

Well here we go again, not as far a field this time only upto bonnie Scotland for a quick jaunt. We are setting off this time with some friends John and Sally and Nicky and Chopper (aka Clive) to navigate our way by foot along the Great Glen Way, a whole 74 miles no cars no bikes and no one to carry the bags, from inverness to Fort William. If all tht works ok the Ben Nevis is the challange at the end. As we have to carry everything with us the excercise of reducing the weight has been somewhat exausting, but have managed to get it down to 13 kilos for the two of us. Flying in the morning and will keep you posted as we go. Will endeavour to get some pics up of ... read more

Hi everyone, winding down on the last leg of our tour now. We arrived in Bangkok safe and sound and headed for our Hotel. Boy, what a complete change after the accommodation we had become used to. This hotel was 88 storeys high and we had a room (well, it was more like a suite) on the 38th floor. We thought we were in heaven, the room was huge, with spectacular views right across the city. We had a dressing room! We were in for an even bigger shock when we took a tour around the hotel. On the 20th floor, there was an outside swimming pool and spa and beauty area, and Dave really did think he was in heaven when we discovered a driving range on the lobby floor. Golf balls being hit into ... read more

Well, what a surprise when we were collected from the hotel in Phnom Penh for our journey to vietnam. Taff was sat at the back of the bus!!! Can't escape from the man. It was nice to see him of course and we travelled across the border together. Completely different to our border crossing in Cambodia, much more sophisticated, although we had to keep getting off the bus and walk. Good journey, though would highly recommend Mekong Express buses to anyone travelling through Cambodia. We didn't even have to endure Cambodian karaoke this time, although they did continually play Westlife DVD's, so I don't really know which is worse! So, here we are back in crazy Saigon! Boy did we forget just how many motorbikes you can get on one road. It was good to be ... read more

A belated Happy Easter to all you happy readers out there!! Well, it's Tuesday evening at 7.15pm and we are now back on mainland and checked back into Coasters after sailing 13kms in a little boat not much bigger than Pill Ferry (for those of you who remember!) and, there were 20ish of us on there. The sea was quite rough, so it was a little hairy to say the least, but we got back safely, if a little wet. There are no jetty's out here, they just point the boat at the land, stop the engine about 30 feet short of the beach and then we drift in. We then have to disembark into the water (about waist deep), with bags on top of our heads. Different eh? What can we say about Bamboo Island ... read more

On our return to Phnom Penh, checked into the same hotel, chilled by the riverside, which left us one day to visit the places we missed the first time before heading off to Sihanoukville. Needless to say, we bumped into Taff several times sitting in bars, chilling as you do! Monday we hired a tuk tuk to take us out to The Killing Fields and then onto the Tuol Sleng Detention Museum. This was harrowing and very disturbing, but felt if we were in Cambodia it was something that needed to be experienced. After the visit we realised why we weren't seeing many older generation Cambodians and really felt for the people and what they had gone through. We won't write anything about it here as it is really disturbing, but will talk to you about ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » North » Angkor March 16th 2008

Arrived safely after a six hour double decker bus journey and checked into our weirdest hotel yet! Well, we have never seen anything like it in our lives. The first room I rejected as it had no window, so he showed us to another room, which seemed to be in the attic of a warehouse. Little rooms added on higgledy, piggledy. But, it was clean, had a bathroom and most importantly air conditioning as as the outside temperature was now 32 degrees, so we accepted it. The walls were painted brick and the ceiling was unplastered, unpainted plasterboard, and two of the walls were unfinished bright orange studwork. Johnny Andrews would have cringed as none of it was either square or straight. But, hey it had character. Loads of it. However, when we went exploring, we ... read more
