We are now two months into our training and we've got several walks under our belt. The weather has been so cold though, some of it hasn't been as enjoyable as it should have been. Sarah Drake and I have been repeating the same walk most Monday afternoons to see how we progress, so we have something to gauge our training on. The walk starts at The Black Horse pub in Clapton in Gordano. The lane that leads up under the motorway is a steady uphill climb past cottages and houses on the right, with lovely gardens. Several rabbits scurried out of our way as we walked up the lane. As we get to the top we turn left over a stile into a field that usually has at least two horses in it that are ... read more

Well, we have started training and it could be going better. We've had a couple of walks with our monthly group which have been really great. Sarah Drake, Sue Winter and myself started at The White Hart at Weston In Gordano one morning when there was still quite a lot of snow around, it was very cold. We left The White Hart and started walking across the moors towards the motorway and as we were walking, the sun started to come out and was melting some of the snow. It was quite hard going over the fields that were rutted and Sue twanged her knee. We saw lots of wildlife though which was great, there seemed to be loads of birds about. We even saw a peacock in someones garden! When we got to Caswell Lane ... read more

Well a new adventure begins, trekking 41 miles through The Himalayas in November. I've always wanted to visit India and The Himalayas happens to be one of the regions I want to see. I'm also very interested and very affected with Buddhism and in particular with the Dalai Lama. So when Sarah (a friend that I have known since school) phoned me and asked if I would be at all interested in a trip to the Himalayas with a visit to Dharamsala (the home of The Dslai Lama and the exiled Tibetan Government) to raise money for Penny Brohn Cancer Centre in Ham Green, I nearly ripped her arm off! We have signed up to the challenge and are very excited about it. We will be trekking for 5 days through The Himalayas, climbing to a ... read more

Nobody told us about the climb out of Kinlochleven!!! I suppose common sense told you that after descending so far down and being surrounded by mountains - there was only one way out. But it was still a shock first thing in the morning. We were all huffing and puffing by the time we got to the top to look behind us at Kinlochleven and the river. The rain was persistent all day and we were literally walking through running water. We were all prepared with our waterproofs and so it wasn't a real problem, especially as we knew this was our last day of walking and we would soon be at Heather and Nicks to chill for a couple of days. The rain stopped for awhile as we approached a small brook and John decided ... read more

We set off at 10am after breakfast this morning heading for "The Devil's Staircase". We had been told that the 9 miles ahead of us consisted of a steep climb, followed by a long descent and that was basically the 9 miles in total. I wasn't looking forward to the climb and there seemed to be a lot of people ahead of us, slowing making their way to the top. The path zig zagged towards the top and we all took a deep breath and headed for the summit. Frank told us all to go ahead and leave him to go at his own pace, so off we went. It was hard going, but wasn't as bad as we had all feared. Again, the views from the top made it all worth it. The ground underfoot ... read more

We were up early this morning and having breakfast at 7am - poor Nikki, she doesn't do early mornings! The men had shopped for our packed lunches the night before so we were all set for the day ahead. Clive had plenty of snacks and chocolate bars (£27 worth!!), but that's another story. We were all a little anxious about today as 20 miles was a long way, but actually compared to other days, the terrain was very good to us, the weather wasn;t too bad - just a few showers and we kept pretty good time. We made sure we stopped every two hours for a break, which was greatly appreciated. The scenery again today was superb and you could you walking for hours without seeing any sign of civilisation, right out in the wilderness. ... read more

This morning we were much lighter as we weren't carrying so much - infact, us girls weren't carrying anything!! We were walking to Tyndrum today a mere 12 miles. Again, the scenery was fantastic and varied, lots of forests and hills and then flat barren looking terrain. We had a couple of really long, steep climbs again, but the views when you got to the top were breathtaking and well worth the pain of getting there. The best view of them all was from the top of a hill looking down at Lake Tula and we had a 360 view. Johnny actually said "this is the best place I have ever been"!!! As I said earlier, there were lots of other people walking the same route as us, and after awhile we all got to know ... read more

We woke on Sunday morning after heavy rain throughout the night and thought we were heading for a very wet day, so packed our bags so that we could get to our waterproofs in a hurry. Our day was going to take us along the banks of Loch Lomond, so everyone was looking forward to it. We all arranged to meet at a certain place, but as this was planned the night before, in the pub, details were a little blurred and we didn't actually manage it. Dave, myself and Frank started walking and hoped the others would catch up with us. After leaving Rowandennan, the sun started to shine and things were looking up for us. We took the high road after advice and started climbing through forests that smelt wonderful. The bluebells were later ... read more

Well, we're all checked into The Kingshouse Hotel in Glen Coe after completing 20.5 miles since 8am this morning!! We started The West Highland Way on Friday lunchtime after landing at Glasgow. We thought it would be fun to catch the train to Mulngavie for the start of the walk, which was 12 miles the first day. The weather was fairly kind to us, only a few showers, but the scenery was a little taster of what was to come. The surprise for us was the amount of other walkers that we met along the way - at one point it was like the M5! We headed to our first stop which was Drymen and checked into our B & B for the night which was above a Bank - unusual. We had our evening meal ... read more

Well here we go again, 6+1 go mad in Scotland again!!!!!. This is the first trip of the year and we are soooooo looking forward to it, as we need to get out and about this year, having not gone to Asia. Joining us this year is Frank, a fit energetic adventurer (what??), who is equally at home in the big outdoors, as he is in the local boozer..... (NOT!) Frank ("when is the next pub-stop") Suarez is joining the usual suspects this year myself (Angela), Dave, John, Sally, Nicky and Clive (our entertainments manager for reasons I am sure will come to light during the trip). This adventure is the West Highland Way, in Scotland - 96 miles of outstanding countryside, hills and variable weather (just read on one of the weather websites that there ... read more
