It has been about five days since my last post, so I’ll try to catch you up. When you last heard from me, I was in Baguio City. Our time there was lovely and included many unforgettable times. We took a jeepney to the market—not just any market—but the market. I already mentioned several fruits that are available here, but the very best one is called lychee. Lychee is a small red-skinned fruit with a whitish translucent flesh that grows in clumps and has a flavor similar to that of a perfumey white peach. We went through security with no problems, although it always seems a bit like it should be the first challenge on an episode of Survivor. It goes like this. No shoes, laptop out of the bag—cords or electronics in one bin, laptop in another—lose the belt, empty your pockets. The first person through gets an upgrade to first class. I think it’d be awesome. After security, we made our way to the gate and boarded half an hour early. Once we were safely at our cruising altitude, our flight attendants, including the one wearing a strap-on swine snout, began serving us dinner. Our meal, per the menu, included chicken with rice and steamed veggies. In actuality, our fare was slightly less defined. There was chicken. Hello everyone, and thanks for checking in. It is T-3 days until I depart for the Philippines, following a route that has Janelle and I leaving from PDX at 2:23 pm on Tuesday, the 19th. From PDX, and after a 10.5 hour flight, our next stop is Tokyo, Japan. After a 2.5 hour layover at Narita, we begin the 5 hour flight to Manila. I'm hoping to check in from Narita with some great stories and photos. Currently, I'm taking a break from packing; paying bills that will be due while I'm gone; making copies of my passport, driver's license, and debit card; charging camera batteries; and making sure I have all my technology accounted for.
