Panorama Spring has arrived in France Day 32-33 This blog is like an infomercial. My laptop is being shipped tomorrow morning and I don't know where my next internet access will be after leaving Biarritz. After all the planning over many months or even years when the idea first came into my head, I'm finally at the start of the Camino Frances. The book that first put the idea in my head is 'Slow Journey South' by Paula Constant. That was 3 years ago. But she started her walk from London and has continued afterwards across the Sahara Desert on a camel train (new book soon to be released). Just so you know where I'm going, I put together a route map. I am doing this slower than most and will be spending extra time in ... read more

Panorama One of the many great views along the coastline Day 29-32 Just 5 hours by train and I've exchanged the hustle and bustle of Paris for the slower lifestyle of Biarritz. I could get used to this pace. Biarritz is a tourist town on the southern Atlantic coast where all the rich and famous have spent some time. This is my last chance for a rest (ha ha). My small backpack is ready for the walk (only about 5kgs without the water bottles full) and my large pack is to be collected and shipped to Santiago and held in storage for me when I arrive. At least I'll have clean clothes waiting for me. I'm sure I'll smell a bit like that cheese I tasted in Paris after 7 or 8 weeks. Come to think ... read more

Panorama A painting by Cezanne. Isn't it gorgeous? Day 23-29 Make a cuppa everyone. This is a big blog. Well, lots of photos with notes. So I'm here in Paris enjoying the sights and sounds, the music, the atmosphere. Ah, Paris! It is beautiful everywhere I look. I am using the useful knowledge I learned from Jane about pronunciation of the sounds and have been able to communicate in stores and even asking for stamps at the post office. I watch the people and listen to their speech to help me with the sounds. The first morning I arrive by Eurostar to the Paris Gare du Nord train station. I'm very tired with very little sleep last night for fear of missing my 5.30am train. I take my time and find a map, check the Metro ... read more

Panorama Original mosaics at the British Museum. I'm in mosaic heaven Day 21-23 What am I doing here again so soon? Well, as most of you know, I will be attempting to walk the pilgrim trail. El Camino de Santiago de Compostela or St James Way. There are many trails throughout Europe and they mostly converge at St Jean Pied de Port, a small town on the French side of the border with Spain across the Pyrenees. The name of this part of the trail is the Camino Frances (all these details will help you to Google it if you want to know more). When I was in Cardiff I received an email from my good friend Sylke confirming the dates when she can join me in Spain. And to make sure I'm there on time ... read more

Panorama The line up near the centre of shopping district in Nottingham Day 19-21 Nottingham today by train-bus-train. They are working on the Birmingham line so the trip will take a bit longer but no less efficient. Again, an easy transition from pack mule to wandering tourist with camera. I meet the locals at the Igloo Hostel. There are about 12 semi permanent residents here and it has a different feel from the normal hostel. With all the various characters in this scenario it's more like Faulty Towers. Maud is the lady in charge and she likes a good chat "Oh, I know" but if it's information you need, she calls on Kevin (a British Indian or Indian Brit) who can tell you all about the people and the places to visit for the best deals. ... read more

Panorama - Kids in the mall having fun. They must have a time limit before they run out of air. Day 17-19 This city of Wales seems a little rough around the edges at first but once I was settled in to the hostel and had a look around, I found more to explore. Cardiff Castle stood, looming and ominous but I didn't take the bait and go in. I want to be more picky about my castles and I thought Nottingham Castle would be more fitting for a Frettingham. So, it's cold, it's windy, it's rainy. What more could I ask for? I walked around town and familiarised myself with the layout. Did you know they speak a funny language there? Sounds of sweet melody and hawkin' for a loogie. Anyway things were quiet this ... read more

Panorama - The Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol Day 15-17 On another train this morning (did I mention how easy it is to get around England?). This time to Bristol...a brief trip but a much bigger place than Bath. Things weren't too encouraging when I was looking out the window to see rather seedier looking houses and run down buildings. I really didn't know what to expect here. At the train station, I look for the information counter, collect a map and find out about transport to my hostel. I find the bus, pay the fare to a surly driver who obviously doesn't like being the driver. A mother and adult daughter hopped on after me and asked the driver questions about what stop they needed for there destination. The driver grunted and gave short answers. ... read more

Panorama - Bath Circus...and not an elephant in sight! Day 13-15 Today I'm off to Bath, an historical town where England's only source of hot springs are found. The Romans knew a good thing 1900 years ago and turned it into a day spa for the well-to-do. The original foundations can be seen of the baths under the later modifications. Quite an interesting place to visit and in the cold weather, it's very tempting to jump in to warm up. But it was hands off, or out, in this instance. There are new baths built about 100 metres away but it is a bit pricey for a dip when they want to fleece you of 22 quid for 2 hours. Bath is a tourist town, no mistaking that, and it's extremely pretty. Beautiful gardens and well ... read more

Panorama - Stone Henge, of course! Day 12-13 When one is asked the question about doing something different, I would jump at the chance. Such is what happened when a friend of a friend asked me the very same question. 'Would you like to spend the night in a decommissioned atomic shelter, Lynne... just for something different?' I must say at this stage that the owner of said shelter is camera shy and would prefer all reference to him or the shelter be made without actually using name and town. One of those things that if a true nuclear fallout were to happen he would suddenly be inundated with new friends wanting to get in. So I shall refer to him as 'friend of a friend of a friend'. Panorama - A view of the promenade at Brighton from the beach looking back. Day 11 Today was a day for me to hop on a train and discover Brighton proper. A short train ride from Shoreham and I'm there. Too easy. Train travel in England is so easy and I use the website raileasy.co.uk to help me out with discounted fares where possible. Brighton is noticeably different with colourful buildings and a hippy-ish look about it, especially in North Laine and the Lanes. A maze of streets and lanes with various stores, cafes and pubs. It's a Saturday and all the street vendors are out on the pavement too. It was quiet to start but soon filled up with weekenders exploring all the new and used wares. At this point I'd like to mention the ... read more
