Aberdeen Inn 8/3/07) Another beautiful day on the Blue Ridge Parkway. A stop at the Maybury Appalachian Mill with the family cabin and other period buildings makes you appreciate the comforts we take for granted. We took a side trip to Blowing Rock, a beautiful little village very "artsy." It looked like a great place to browse however, once again underestimating travel time meant a quick stop at the actual Blowing Rock, the wind blows up from the valley, and a highway route to get to Asheville for check-in. Unfortunately this meant not finishing the last part of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Our first impression of the neighborhood location of the Inn was "is this the right place?!" The Inn however is very clean, comfortable and our innkeepers, Tom and Marilyn, very personable and friendly. They ... read more

(Thursday 8/2/07) With goodbyes said we headed off for the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Shenandoah National Park. Even with the haze, a combination of humidity and pollution from the North East we were told, the views are amazing. A ranger told us they only have about 10 clear days during the summer. The Park offers accommodations and excellent, reasonable restaurants. You really need at least a week to do this drive justice. We were surprised at how little traffic there was. We saw more motorcycles than cars. The drive took longer than anticipated so needing to check in at the Bent Mountain Lodge we reluctantly left the parkway and took a faster highway route. We called ahead and they advised us to eat in Roanoke as there was nothing near the lodge. They weren't kidding. ... read more

After months of planning on we're finally off on our trip across America. We arrived in Chantilly VA at Adrea and Jim's house about 5pm Tuesday evening, a long uneventful trip with only one missed turn sending us over the George Washington Bridge. We enjoyed the hospitality of our good friends Andrea, Jim and their girls, Emily and Katie, both students at Virginia Tech, and Benji the dog. Wednesday Andrea joined us and we toured Mount Vernon. It's definitely a good destination and a fascinating glimpse into history. The weather was hot as to be expected but a cloud cover most of the day made it bearable. After a quick stop at Washington's grist mill and distillery it was off to meet Jim for dinner at the Old Ebbitt Grill in the city. It was then off ... read more

Most of my adult life I've sailed boats and enjoyed being out on the water. I've owned a variety of sail boats and and been the member of two yacht clubs. For twenty years I raced on Thursday nights with Jim at the Jubilee Yacht Club. Unfortunately I only have one picture of me sailing.... read more
