David here... The flight from Taglibaran was a good one. We were moved to an emergency exit row, so had lots of leg room and no reclining seats in front of us. The flight took a little over an hour and we were soon in Manila. The capital city of crime and kidnappings, no street is safe to walk down and don't you dare get into a taxi. Public transport is also a no no. If you do make it to your hotel from the airport, don't ever leave your room. All nonsense of course and Manila has built a reputation over recent years as being the place to be for New Years Eve, which is why we were here. We jumped into a yellow taxi from the airport and were soon on the Sky toll ... read more

Suzanne here... We'd treated ourselves to a nice little resort for Christmas, booking months before, and were quite excited about it. Nothing too flash, just twelve villas in a garden with a pool and bar / restaurant but it looked lovely online. We arrived at Alona Royal Palm early and the room wasn't ready so had a couple of beers by the pool. It was a beautiful setting but unfortunately a staff meeting was in progress and the owner was having a right moan. Not very professional, it made us feel a bit uncomfortable. Actually this bad first impression wasn't representative of the rest of our stay as he turned out to be really nice. In any case, we decided to make ourselves scarce and explore the area. Alona Beach semed nice, decent sandy beach and ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Bohol » Tagbilaran December 24th 2016

David here... The 2 hour ferry journey over to Bohol and Tagbilaran was alright. We were given water and a biscuit and entertainment was provided by a film being shown (aptly, Battleships). My only complaint is that if you have signs up saying no smoking and mention it in your safety video, enforce the rule. As we approached the pier area to dock, a huge Brahminy Kite (in Australia apparently it's known as a Red Backed Sea Eagle, which seems more apt for such an impressive bird) swooped alongside us. We'd seen these birds before, on Koh Chang, but not this close. It used the air currents to circle round and then dived down towards the waters surface to catch a fish. As it flew back up it dropped the fish. It was an amazing sight ... read more

David here... We arrived at the Cebu North bus terminal later than anticipated due to the excessive traffic all around the city. It was so bad that we contemplated tackling the 1 hour walk to our hotel however that would've been stupid in the heat, even though it was early evening. We got off the bus and joined the queue for the white metered taxi's and it was not long until we were near the front. When second in the queue, we were ushered forward by the attendant and given the taxi that had just pulled in. We didn't think much of it at the time but we were behind 2 local women and we wished we had insisted that they took the taxi regardless of what the driver wanted, but we weren't that on the ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Malapascua Island December 20th 2016

Suzanne here... We were sad to be leaving Bangkok, and feeling slightly flat as we left NAP Hotel. First of all Google Maps sent us down some train tracks to get to Phaya Thai, which we didn't much enjoy, especially in the dark. Also, we had a very long journey ahead of us. A 10.45pm flight to Manila, then another flight to Cebu. We'd then have to get to the bus station for a five hour bus journey up to Maya and a boat to Malapascua. Phew, all a bit much with no chance to sleep. Perhaps we should have planned to break the journey up, but as our Cebu flight landed at 6.15am it seemed that the best use of the early start was to get the whole journey done and dusted in one go. ... read more

David here... We got up at 07:30 for breakfast, which was actually pretty good at The Gallery. Decent coffee, different choices each day, the cheesy mash, pork in mushroom sauce and chicken in black pepper sauce being my favourites. No idea why they kept the lids of the food open and the air conditioning blasting at it to make it cold. Anyway, we packed up our things and headed down to check out at 08:30 so we would be ready for our pick up 10 minutes later. No sooner had we checked out than our minivan arrived. There were no seats together available but we could sit one in front of the other. Suzanne quickly realised that she would be better off in the front seat instead of next to the 2 Japanese girls who had ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Eastern Thailand » Koh Chang » Koh Chang December 13th 2016

Suzanne here... We walked to the bus station in Trat to get a taxi to the jetty as it was closer than town and we thought it would be busier. It wasn't as it turned out, and with only one other passenger the promised 50 bhat fare each increased first to 80, then 90. When it hit 100 baht each we basically told him to stick it, so it went back to 90. Probably over the odds but at least we were on our way. Unexpectedly we were dropped off at a ticket agent a little way from the pier, but the boat fare was as expected and included drop off at the boat so it was fine. The journey to Koh Chang only took about 30 minutes and there were shared taxis along the coast, ... read more

David here... We arrived at Bangkoks Don Meung airport after a short and pleasant flight. We made our way to immigration and this is where the airport rage started. We joined a queue but quickly spotted that there was only one desk open so decided to move to another queue. As we joined a much smaller queue the attendants opened up a barrier and a swarm of Chinese people made their way over to where we now were. I don't mind waiting in line, I am British after all and consider myself an expert queuer. What I do mind is people pushing in front, which appears to be exactly what these particular Chinese people thought queues were for. 3 'gentlemen' in particular tried to push past us despite other people in the queue behind us. Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Mandalay December 1st 2016

Suzanne here... There are three sensible ways to get from Bagan to Mandalay - train, bus or boat. The train was tempting, but it is slow and unreliable in Myanmar. Bus was the most sensible option, cheapest and quickest, but nothing special. Boat was by far the most expensive and the longest journey. So naturally that's the one we went for. In the end we decided to make a day trip of it, with the drop off at Mandalay almost an added bonus at the end. After all, how often were we going to get the opportunity to sail along the Irrawaddy river? We arranged a taxi to the jetty with our hotel (5000 kyat) for 4.45am. Another early start which naturally I struggled with. We'd picked RV Panorama, booking online as it wasn't the company ... read more

Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Bagan November 28th 2016

Suzanne here... Most people get the night bus from Inle to Bagan, and on reflection perhaps we should have done too. But we'd already booked and paid for the Bagan hotel and didn't want to waste a night. Plus we fancied seeing the scenery. There was a morning option, a mini bus, leaving at 7am, so we booked it. In fact, as this Asia, it didn't pick us up until 7.30am, collected a few others, then parked up at their office around the corner from our hotel for no apparent reason for 20 minutes. We departed at about 8.20am, with me cursing the loss of the extra hour I could have had in bed (I really am not a morning person). The journey was bearable. A mini bus is never going to be as comfortable as ... read more
