Gosh, have the Avalon crew kept us busy - but not as busy as they have been trying to keep to schedules while the flooded river creates havoc with plans. However, we are in the right pace at the right time so the pressure is off. This region has had 12 weeks of rain - unheard of. Although it's not raining on our exact parade, the skies have been grey and the temps 11 degrees highs, so we are all well rugged up for our off-ship tours. On Saturday we were on a coach early for the drive into Vienna from Brataslava because the river was closed. It turned out to be a great opportunities to see towns outside of the main centres including miles of wind turbines. The bus tour of Vienna itself pointed out ... read more

After going through our first lock and arriving in port at Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, it took our very able Captain 15 mins to fight a river in flood to dock safely. He said that for the first time in 5 years he had to throw out the anchor, have the ship at full throttle yet could only make 3 knots. Impressive. This morning we toured the old part of the city by bus and on foot - again, impressive fortifications and old buildings. We are docked near the newish bridge known as the UFO bridge because of a round saucer-like restaurant on the top of one of the bridge spans. A large separate walking deck is under the roadway. We are impressed with the humour of people we have met in both Hungary and ... read more

It's a grey, cold Dunedin winter's day here in Budapest but Dick and Su are warm aboard the good ship Expressions while Lynette and Terry have taken a bus tour around the city with other passengers. Lynette and Terry took 31 hours to get here on Monday after be diverted to Heathrow before transferring on an extra fight to Budapest because of a Lufthansa pilot strike. However, after settling into the hotel they managed to join Su and Dick on a riverside walk before catching up on some much-needed sleep. Tuesday was a sightseeing day and as Wednesday morning before boarding the Avalon Waterways ship. And what a ship. It is just 11 months old, has 166 passengers and 44 crew, has marble bathrooms, big glass windows everywhere, stunning art and floral arrangements, and would you ... read more

We arrived in Budapest about 9am yesterday and right from the airport to now, the only place not clean and well cared for was the Gillert spa. After Istanbul where litter and cigarette butts reign supreme, Budapest is altogether a completely different place...they even have men with brooms and shovels sweeping up the autumn leaves. A losing battle but full marks for trying. From the 2 hr Turkish Airlines flight yesterday we hopped straight onto a 2hr bus tour of this lovely city. In that time we saw just a small but significant portion of the city. Many of the buildings have been rebuilt since the war and more recently, the deliberate destruction of of treasured ancient architecture by the occupying Soviet regime, true to their original plans. Even the re-built bridges over the Danube have ... read more

Middle East » Turkey October 18th 2014

Today we were in both Asia and Europe, yesterday we were mainly in Asia...Turkey certainly spans the continents in a very interesting way. Yesterday we were up at 4am an off to the Cappodocia, or Kapadokya as it is in Turkish, region. We flew with Turkish Airways and it was brilliant - much like an Air NZ flight BUT all the seats were leather...oft, sumptuous leather and the smell was devine. The drive from the airport in Cappodocia to the main sights was quite like travelling in part of Central Otago and the McKenzie country only without the big irrigators. Then we hit the area of the mind-blowing cities below the ground that date many hundreds of years BC, the fairy towers that are basalt from a volcanic eruption 2 million years ago that were then ... read more

I have to say, the Turkish take on what it means to be Muslim is very different to other countries. There is no throwing down prayer mats in the streets whenever the call to prayer is heard 5x day as Su has seen done in Egypt (the Turks generally feel such displays of devotion are ostentatious), that prayer at home is very acceptable, that gays are acceptable, that women don't have to wear head-scarves or burkas, and that women have equal rights to men. We've enjoyed learning about it as lived in Istanbul. The change is attributed to The Father of The Nation, Mustaffa Attaturk, who decided many decades ago to look to the west for Turkey's future. Hence the Turkish language is in the Western alphabet not Arabic script. The age of civilisation here is ... read more

Oh wow, oh wow, oh wow. We are reeling from Istanbul's ancient sights, the smell of food absolutely everywhere and I really mean that as food is a huge part of their culture, the noise of a busy city of 15 million people and the necessary trams, buses, cars and bikes that whiz around the narrow cobblestone streets in the old part of the city, and of course the colour of the pottery, rugs, silks, cottons, wools and jewellery. We arrived earlyish yesterday and were met by a guide at the airport and driven to our little hotel...just 3 rooms on our floor and there are 6 floors, although the place does have a suite and a couple of two-bedroom options, so overall it's tiny. We are the only guests!!! The tourist season is tapering off ... read more

MISSING October 13th 2014

Amazing. It's very hard not to be impressed by the way Singapore manages it's image, especially to tourists.Buildings have to be kept in excellent condition and cars have to be under 10 years old, although the trade vehicles must be an exception because they certainly weren't modern. We did a great deal of walking even thought the humidity was sapping. Dropping into air conditioned malls to cool dow... read more

It was off to the Chinese quarter this morning...Su fell in love with a $2400NZ white gold bracelet for her Medic Alert...needless to say we left with a $135 silver one and the price included attaching it to the disc. She now refuses to look at any other bracelets just in case she realises she'd been taken to the cleaners. It was then off to Santosa Island; monorail over and gondola back. Great views, amazing architecture but at 30degrees and 91% humidity Dick, who hadn't had anything to drink since one cuppa at 7am, almost collapsed, so it was back to the hotel in a taxi and into a cool shower. Needless to say, Su, who had bought bottled water and kept sipping, wasn't very pleased. The afternoon was spent in an air conditioned seven-level mall ... read more

We've only been in Singapore a couple of hours but already we are enjoying the heat...it's 6.30pm and 30 degreesC. Su got picked on by authorities today but was relaxed about it all. First she went through Christchurch immigration which spotted that her passport was not signed so she had to do that in front of an officer, then she was not recorded as being on the flight. However, the boarding pass was correct so they let her through. Then Su and Dik were called out over the loud speaker to report to the Singapore Airlines desk. Evidently there was something not quite right with Su's boarding details. Then it was decided all was OK. Then Su got pulled out of the line for a bag swab for explosives! Naturally they found nothing. Anyway, the rest ... read more
