Leaving Conarkry, the first vehicle I travelled in poisoned me with fumes, in the second car the wheels fell off! OK , I tell a lie, it was only the one wheel. I've left Guinea now, but this blog is going to about the journey from Conarkry across the country to the border with Mali. I also had to give up on this blog at the first attempt because of illness. FRIDAY 4th FEBRUARY At this stage I was still in the capital Conakry. I changed hotels for somewhere half the price I had been in the day before. The Hotel Galaxie also has a much better location - right in the centre of Kaloum on 5th Avenue. I wandered around and visited the Marche Niger. The market sells everything. In general the city centre juxtaposes ... read more

Africa » Guinea February 3rd 2005

Just before entering Guinea I had an email from a friend about a BBC report of a coup attempt in Guinea. He said, was I going to Guinea Bissau rather than Guinea. I made it clear that I was going to Guinea and that I considered Guinea to be a safe and stable country - the human rights record is not good but it has avoided the descent into Civil War that most of it's neighbours have suffered from. So, what about the coup attempt? It seems that someone shot into the Presidential motorcade and injured one of the bodyguards. Some of the reports that I heard suggested that there never was a coup attempt - that it may have been stage managed as an excuse to arrest political opponents. Whatever the truth, the billionaire diabetic ... read more

Africa » Senegal » Tambacounda Region January 26th 2005

Tambacounda, is where I'm staying for the night. This town is a major crossroads between Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Gambia, and for the Niokola Koba National Park. Niokola Koba Park, is Senegal's major national park - its residents include elephants, lions, leopards, hippos, crocodiles, water buck, bush buck, kob, baboons, buffaloes, monkeys, warthogs, antelopes and hartbeest. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to visit the park or make my way to Guinea - I'll decide that in the morning. I'll go into more detail now about recent events: TUESDAY 25 JANUARY I left the relative comfort of the Hotel in Ziguinchor to make my way towards the Guinea border. The taxi driver that took me to the garage told me that I needed to go to Kolda first and then catch a connecting bus to Tambacounda. ... read more

It's nice to have left the predatory 'bumsters' of the Gambia behind. Bumsters is the local Gambian name for the touts and would be guides that plague the Atlantic coast. Here in Ziguinchor, it's much more relaxed. This is undoubtedly because Ziguinchor isn't a mass package tourism destination. The interior of the Gambia may be less of a hassle, but I never got there, as I spent days feeling unwell with tooth ache and didn't want to do anything. It has to be said being pestered by bumsters when I have tooth ache makes me bad tempered! Anyway, I decided yesterday to move on, despite not visiting some of the things up country that I had intended. The Lonely Planet wasn't very helpful as to the location of the Casamance garage for the bus to the ... read more

I've been feeling sorry for myself for the past few days since my last posting. I've been in pain, with tooth ache! I apologise to any Dentists that might read this, but how many of us like the idea of visiting a dentist? The evening after my last posting on the 17th, I started to feel some intermittent pain. As the night went on it only got worse. I didn't sleep much. In the morning I asked Mo who runs the guest house for advice. He suggested some tincture that I could buy. I also asked where I could find a dentist - but I wasn't that keen on visiting one if I could help it! I don't like visiting dentist in the UK, let alone in a poor African country. A Dutch guy, who was ... read more

Gambia is one of the oddest shaped countries in the world. It is just a few kms either side of the Gambia river, surrounded on 3 sides by Senegal and the other by the sea. It has been 6 days since by last blog - in that time I have been in both Senegal and the Gambia. There have been several attempts in the past at uniting Senegal and the Gambia, which is not surprising considering the Gambia s strange geography. Some general points - the food in Senegal has been superb! I didn't come to Africa for the food, so the quality of the Senegalese cuisine has been a revelation. Also despite the groups of touts, street crime etc, in general the people are very friendly and hospitable. Since my last blog I left Dakar ... read more

I am now in Dakar, the capital of Senegal. I left Saint-Louis on Sunday morning. When getting the taxi to the Gare for Dakar, I had to bargain, one taxi driver tried to charge 3 times the going rate. At the Station they asked the going rate for the journey but tried to charge me 500 francs for the rucksack. I refused, so instead of taking a collective taxi to Dakar I ended up in a mini bus. Thinking about it I was arguing over very small amounts of money - 500 francs is 50 pence sterling. Having opted for the cheaper mini bus I then had to wait an hour for the bus to leave. They don't leave until they are full - and full means over full. The minibus would have been comfortable with ... read more

I'm still in St-Louis, relaxing. Yesterday I took a day trip to the National Park for birds at Djoudj. It is one of the most important bird sanctuaries in the world. Over 3 million birds migrating south from Europe stop at the Parc National des oiseaux du Djoudj. I organised a tour with a guide who works for the National Park. His English was non existent, but he spoke slowly and repeated things when I didn't understand. As a result I followed everything he was saying in French. The park was well worth a visit, if not cheap. I had to get up early to visit, as I met my guide at 8am. So, I didn't get a chance to say goodbye to the other travellers. They didn't go to the park as it was too ... read more

Africa » Senegal » Saint-Louis Region » Saint-Louis January 6th 2005

I'm now in St-Louis Senegal, which was the old colonial capital. It still has a lot of the old French colonial charm. St-Louis was a welcome sight after the trip from the Mauritanian Border. I left Nouakchott in Mauritania on the morning of the 4th of January. We left Patrick and Chris behind. Patrick still wasn't feeling well - so he didn't want to travel. We caught a pick up truck to the border - the journey was relatively uneventful. The fun started when we got to the border. Leaving Mauritania can be expensive, the guards demand all sorts of 'taxes'. At the border we were besieged by touts trying to get us to change money. We waited. Crossing through a gate we handed our passports to the guard, who then passed them on to a ... read more

It's been six days since I was able to get anywhere near an internet cafe - in that time a lot has happened. I am going to write this blog in diary format, day by day as I wrote the entries in my notebook. Some amazing things have happened in that time, including a bush taxi leaving for a 3 hour journey across the desert without putting any petrol in. It ran out of petrol after half an hour. So, we were stuck in the middle of nowhere. What was the driver thinking of! Did he expect the taxi to run on thin air, or was he expecting to beg the petrol from passing traffic? Anyway, more of that incident later. I will now use the diary format. 28th DECEMBER Guess what? The train didn't arrive ... read more
