Quick update: We both are in our office space at the school. The office itself is bigger than our living space, and the air conditioning is better, so we may find ourselves being in here a lot during the next 9 months. Many of you already have access to our Flickr page where we keep our pictures. We will try to let you know every time we post new pictures, but otherwise, save this page and go to it every now and then for updates: Click Here For Photos Try clicking that link above, or if that does not work, copy this link below and paste it into your browser. http://www.flickr.com/photos/24507962@N07/collections/72157622115423480/ Please let us know if it does not work well. Just a quick note to let you all know we made it to our school! We're actually living on campus in 2 dorm rooms...so one will be primarily occupied and the other might become our 'crap' room. I'm writing to you from our spacious office (really, it's bigger than both of our rooms) which is the only place we currently have internet. We will see how it goes! We have a stack of letters our students wrote for us at the end of their last term compiled here on our desk that the former foreign teacher left. Our contact teachers, Harry and Shaka, are ridiculously nice and I think will be really helpful for the year. Time to unpack! Love you all.... read more

Martin and I will be living together in an apartment in the Bao'an District of Shenzhen, at Bao'an Senior High. Woot woot! It isn't our first choice, as Bao'an is one of two districts outside of the main city area, but we'll make do. Our Chinese will surely get better being in an outer district, and we're still together and at the same school, which was really priority one anyway! Plus, we got seniors, which was also a top choice for us. Not everyone is too happy about their placements and we're both going with the philosophy that there's nothing you can do but make the best of this year anyway, so why spend time complaining about it. We'll still be going into the city twice a week for Chinese class, and our friends Jimmy & ... read more

Well, after a 25 hour train ride and then an hourish bus ride to our hotel, we are HERE! Staying at the nicest hotel I've ever been in for the next three nights will feel glorious. We're exhausted and off to bed so that we can get up at 6am to eat a provided breakfast and then spend the first half of the day getting our medical exams for our work visas done. Here's to hoping for a clean bill of health! :)... read more

Well, this is our last day of training in Beijing! We're off this morning to take our Chinese & TEFL exams, and then go with our students to a closing ceremony for them, where each class will perform a silly English song or skit- Martin's class is doing the chicken dance and my class is doing an adaptation of the Three Little Pigs. Should be an entertaining afternoon! Tonight we'll have our own ceremony closing, receive our TEFL certificates, eat a dinner provided by the program and PACK. We have to be all ready to go by 7:30am tomorrow so that our luggage can get checked onto the train while we're at the Forbidden City tomorrow during the day...and then we'll be on an overnight train to Shenzhen that leaves around 8pm, woohoo! Wish us luck ... read more

Staci and I were planning on going to the vegetarian restaurant last night, but as we were headed out the door, a fellow teacher, came our way and invited us out to dinner with a few others. It's so nice to be here with a big group as it allows us to make friends and experience being in a foreign place with like-minded adventurers. We had a bit over an hour to spare before take off, so the two of us headed out to get some bubble tea from this place we've seen next to our hotel. They had a small menu translated in English and we ordered a pineapple tea and a blueberry tea. It turned out not to be the type of bubble tea we were expecting, yet still delicious. Crushed ice with flavored ... read more

I wish we had pictures, but we went to Starbucks today and it was every bit as delicious as I was hoping for. :) Yes, I had a tall mocha frappuccino, something that you can say in English anywhere in the world and be understood. For the twenty minutes that we sat inside sipping our drinks, I almost forgot we were in a different country. In fact, the people closest to us were two men that kept alternating between speaking Mandarin and English- one of the men was American. Then we walked back outside to the cars honking, people spitting, men baring their midriffs everywhere (what, you don't pull up your shirt and let your tummy hang out in the heat? Oh. Chinese men love doing it!) We decided to continue our American streak and stopped ... read more

Well, a few more days have come and gone. Every day kind of melts into another, since our schedule has become so routine. I had my first evaluation today (Thursday) finally, and it went really well. She said we were awesome and just had a few pointers for making things connect better. My kids are hilarious. One of my students is only 10 (in a junior high class) and the most adorable thing you've ever seen. His English name is Mike and he's constantly volunteering answers or saying "Thank you, Teacher. Yes, Teacher!" Whenever you ask a student how they are, they respond by saying "Fine, thank you!! And you?" You can keep this going with them too, and they don't even get it. "Good, and you?" "Fine, thank you!! And you?" China success: We successfully ... read more

FINALLY, a day off from the crazy program. It was amazing. We loaded onto our two Peking University tour buses at 7:30am and took off for a 2ish hour drive to the Great Wall (see Martin's post yesterday). I don't have words for it other than incredible. Our legs are dead. It was a pretty intense climb, but we took our time and took many breaks to take pictures and just enjoy the scenery around us. We had some blue sky, definitely rare through all the pollution, so that was nice. We got there around 9, hiked around until 11 and then took the 'toboggan-sled' type thing down the Great Wall- more than worth the extra yuan we had to shell out! It made me wish Neal and Anna were with us to join in on ... read more

Coming to live in China has required us to once again embrace many of the same things we did exactly one year ago today. Staci and I celebrated our first anniversary of marriage yesterday (Sunday). Since we are 15 hours ahead, the exact moment in time was today, but regardless, the feat is quite special nonetheless. China has required us to take a deeper look into trust, communication, love, humor, and dedication. The program we are a part of has been, as advertised—very intensive indeed!. Of course, Staci and I are probably making it more intense then needed, but I guess it is in our nerdy-studious-old-boring-married-couple-nature. It seems like many of the participants are still in the partying mode, seeking out every opportunity to down a cold one or two….or thirty. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes ... read more
