Two days in Paparoa and one of them was really sunny! On the sunny day we hiked up to the top of Mount Ryal. From the top we had a superb view of the Southern Alps, including Mt. Cook, which is New Zealand's highest peak. The lady at the desk seemed to think the hike was boring and "in the bush" the whole time, but the trees were amazing and we got to climb along a knife thin tree line for a while that would have spelled doom to anyone that fell. We also checked out the pancake rocks and blowhole, which wasn't erupting despite being there for high tide. Boooo. The next day we forded a river and made our way to the Fox River Cave, which had sweet stalagmites and stalactites along with some ... read more

Old mining sites and lots of caves! We hung around Karamea for two days and checked out the trails. We got poured on one day while investigating some really neat caves. One was a tunnel you had to travel 100 meters through to continue on the trail! We also went further to check out an old gold mining site (where incidentally it started to pour) and found ourselves huddling in a recreated miners hut with a weka (wingless bird) stalking us for cracker bits. We slept at the start a beautiful DOC camp. The second day we pushed the limits of our gas tank and went up a 14 mile old logging road to see some arches and more caves. The arches were quite impressive. One was 30 meters tall and a couple hundred meters long. ... read more

The track was really extraordinary. It was quite chilly for most of the time and threatened rain, but through some brilliant maneuvering we made it through dry. The first night we stayed in the Anchorage hut and checked out some nice watering holes called Cleopatra pools, where we also happened upon a rather naked couple. Whoops. The Bark Bay hut was next and was the nicest with hardwood floors and spacious rooms, but was super crowded with people. We slept in our room with mostly Germans. The next day was our first high tide crossing, which we made easily. On to the Awaroa hut where there was hardly anyone! Hurray! Our final day we made the final easy trek to Totorauni where we caught a water taxi back. It was marvelous. We saw seals and penguins ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Queen Charlotte Sound October 31st 2011

Walked on the Queen Charolotte trail today and somehow managed to hike 13 or 14 miles without even breaking a sweat (we're fabulous. just kidding. after hiking straight up the steepest road evreything else seems trivial). We went swimming in Davies Bay in turquois waters. It looked Bahama, but was just about as cold as Wyoming alpine lakes. We saw some wild goats munching on local flora. We also ate ALL the leftovers, which we were forced to finish off because Brian threatened to throw a revolt if there was a day 3 of spaghetti. I would write more but Brian is growing anxious. We head out on the Abel Tasman trail starting November 3rd until the 6th. We'll write again soon after that!!! ... read more

On to wine country! It was delicious. After trying to find a hike in beautiful sheep country, but failing, we gave up and hit up the vineyards. We tried two establishments, Forrest and Hunter, and both were quite delicious. Giggling continued for a few hours after the wine tasting and we made our way to Picton. Beautiful place. The water is so blue and green mountains shoot straight out of the sound waters. We happened upon a tasty pastry place. I got an apple tart and Brian got a super brownie. We wandered around the bay taking in the sound. We found starfish, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, and a GIANT hermit crab, who gave a photo shoot for Brian (he told him he was sexy).... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Kaikoura October 29th 2011

The clouds cleared so we thought we would attempt another peak called Mt. Fyfe. The grade was called easy/moderate in our book. SIKE!! If that is easy then I would like to see what they call hard. Maybe it was easy because it was on a road the whole way up, but it was also the world's steepest road. We figured out that we climbed 1000 feet a mile. The views were awesome though. The Kaikoura range was on our backside and the Pacific Ocean was on our front. After somehow making it back down we went to investigate the fur seal colonies. They were incredibly cute and smelled incredibly bad. I think that one of the layers in hell could be just having to sit in their stench for the rest of eternity. Musky with ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Hanmer Springs October 28th 2011

We started out our day making a lovely meal in the camper van and then going out to explore. The forest are very lush around Hanmer Springs and we hiked out to a waterfall. The waterfall was amazing! Probably 50 feet high with ferns and moss everywhere. We then happened upon a trail that led to the summit of Mt. Isabel and summited our firest New Zealand mountain! After our hike we drove out to Kaikoura and walked around the very lovely beach town. We stayed at another holiday park right on the beach! It also happened to have a zip line (called a "Flying Fox" in NZ) which was probably 50 years old and sent us crashing into rubber tires that poured water on us (um, yes, it was awesome.) ... read more

SO this is kind of playing catch-up but here we go... We landed in Auckland after a nice nights rest on the airplane. We got off the plane and talked to a very nice police woman who told us to go through custums. After not seeing our baggage on the carosel for a while we became concerned and brought this to the attention of a very jittery baggage agent, who informed us that we were not supposed to go through customs at this juncture. WHOOPS. I am imagining this happened because I was too involved in playing Bejeweled to pay attention to what the flight attendent said and Brian said he seconded guessed himself. Brian: slightly embarrassed. Melissa: unphased. We finally made it to Christchurch with a big CANCEL on our first customs stamp and went ... read more
