Can you clear your mind of your thoughts upon arriving in Santorini? This could be the destination or requirement to travel to if you seek help or guidance and need to forget everything while you're away. For real! The friends and family you've talked to about this magical and spiritual island will never prepare you emotionally and physically when you arrive. We flew in from Athens for a quick 35 minutes and you could sense the excitement in the boarding area of the gate. Travellers dressed casually, beach attire or business casual. They were all feeling the same. For me it was because in the 80's I saw " Summer Lovers" with Daryl Hannah and Michael Pappas. My thoughts were that there couldn't be a place like this in the world? The movies cinematography takes you ... read more

We arrived in Athens from Rome. It's 2:15pm local time here and our flight leaves for Santorini in 2 hours. Had a great time in Italy catching up with and celebrating with good friends in Tuscany as well as brushing up on my Italian. Went pretty well and a few things in the language that I should be researching on. The pronouns maybe? Puchased a book in the Rome airport titled "Instant English" by John Peter Sloan. I downloaded his App on Itunes and it was interesting. I am happy to have the book. The book has equal parts Italian which is the reason I bought it. We'll see how it goes. Upon our arrival in Santorini for 3 nights, we'll be taking the ferry to Naxos for 4 nights, Mykanos for 4 nights and finally ... read more

Europe » Italy » Umbria » Orvieto May 22nd 2014

A last minute decision today to visit Orvieto in the Umbria region but worth the trip. A quick 40 minute train ride from Chiusi/ Chioncino train station and upon arrival you cross a street and pay $1.30 Euro to ride the Venicular to the top. If you had to compare and I will use Montepulciano as an example. Montepulciano offers wonderful vistas everywhere you look but tends to come across as a more touristy area with shops dedicated to the tourists. Orvieto is completely the opposite and is a good mix of touristy areas and local charm. The streets are beautiful and a bit of an upgrade in comparison to Montepulciano. There is a dedicated tourist area close to the church which is magnificent and looks like the Duomo in Florence. It is beautiful. The train ... read more

Be ready for a hard workout hiking in these hills. Originally we heard about 10-12 km but we found out about 15-16 km because we included Montechiello. Our friend drove us to the starting point in Pienza and we followed a route in a novel Bob purchased back home. Walking and Eating in Tuscany and Umbria. James Lasdun & Pia Davis. Pages 291-296' hikr time is 3-4 hours. We ate at a small restaurant in Montechiello and drank a 750 ml of beer which was not heavy in the belly but heavy in the price (45 Euros) for 4. They have a smaller bottle available. The food (pici, salad with tuna and an omelette were enough of a boost to finish the hike for the remainder 2 hours. We asked our server if there was a ... read more
