There were two things left on our tour itinerary, and after the depressing Killing Field tours we were glad to do something different to lighten our mood. First off we headed to the Russian Markets. These weren't unlike other markets that we have visited on this trip but this time with Cambodian women encouraging you to look in their little area. It was a huge maze of tiny shops that all looked the same - so much so that it was easy to lose your bearings. We eventually emerged back into daylight and located our tuk-tuk driver for our last activity of the day. The last thing we did was something that we simply had to try here, because we could never imagine being allowed to do it in Europe! The tuk-tuk driver took a sharp ... read more

It has taken me weeks to write this blog, mainly because I didn't know where to start. And because I didn't want to relive the haunting visit we paid to Choeung Ek, also known as The Killing Fields, just outside Phnom Penh in Cambodia. We also went to the holding jail known as S21, which now holds the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. It is a trip that is not for the faint hearted. For the most part, this blog isn't either. After a painless trip from Siem Reap we found our way to the riverside esplanade to enjoy dinner watching the world go by. As I looked up from my menu, Philippe enquired “did you see the Elephant?” and I thought he was having a laugh. But low and behold, on the road in front of ... read more

“Aaaaaagghhhhhh, will you just get out of my face?!!” was what I wanted to scream at the many touts that flocked around us as we crossed the border into Cambodia. They literally swarmed us, called out contradictory information and made it difficult for us to think straight. It was a truly uncomfortable experience, but we survived and didn't even properly lose our temper! Earlier that day we chose to take a public bus to Aranyaprathet and take a tuk-tuk to the border from there. Taking a public bus was four times the price of the train but at four euro per person for a five hour trip it was still great value. Choosing the bus also meant that we could leave at the more humane time of 8.30am, in lieu of the 4am start we would ... read more

From the peace and tranquility of Mama's bungalows we reached the jetty in Ranong and tried to secure a taxi back into town. As it turned out, the man who brought us was Soi's brother - sadly not known as 'Uncle'. He dropped us at Pon's Place where we had a bite to eat and then took a taxi to the bus station to catch the one o'clock mini-bus to Chumphon. When we got there we discovered that there was only one seat remaining on the one o'clock bus and the two o'clock bus was sold out. We had no choice only to book the three o'clock and pull up a pew in the bus terminal to wait it out. I have no problem with spending time in bus stations. It gives me a legitimate excuse ... read more

The jetty was a busy place, with several boats docked at once. Local men plodded by carrying huge bags of food and crates of drink to the boats. Once everything was loaded in our long boat, we had to climb on and negotiate our way over bags of vegetables, bales of eggs and huge ice blocks to take our seat on a wooden plinth at the back of the boat. The skipper launched forth once all the passengers were aboard and we were amazed at the size of the motor propelling us towards Ko Chang. It was a special boat trip, for many reasons, but mostly because we enjoyed being part of the shopping process. As we chugged away from the jetty we passed an eery boat graveyard, and many big fishing boats that were returning ... read more

We had one hiccup in Satun that we didn't see coming. Because we came into Thailand over land, they were only willing to give us a 15 day visa, instead of the 30 days we were expecting. So it was with puzzled faces that Philippe and I walked into the arrivals hall at Satun's ferry port. A weird looking man in glasses and a wooley hat was hassling us to find out where were were going from the minute we set foot on dry land. He looked a bit like Ali G, but with a mafia boss swagger. We swatted him away from us a few times before we came to realise that he was the boss man in the terminal. There wasn't a taxi in sight when we hit sunlight, and the only communal bus ... read more

'How would Santa Claus know where to find us?' was my biggest preoccupation with being in Villa Molek, Langkawi, for Christmas morning. If this was the only issue, it gives you an idea of the level of luxury we were surrounded by. We had reserved these villas back in Australia, promising ourselves that we would be good to ourselves for a few days around Christmas. The luxury didn't come cheap, but it was so nice that it took the edge off being away from home for these special days. We had to rise early to be in time to take the only boat that runs from Penang to Langkawi. Standing at the Port at 7.30am there was a small problem with processing our reservation. It was quickly resolved and we were bumped up to a slightly ... read more

We were accosted by shouts of 'taxi., taxi' as we alighted the bus in the Bus Terminal in Melaka. Not knowing how it works or how far we were from our hostel, we took some time to walk through the terminal. We finally found an ATM to withdraw some Malaysian Ringgits and then ordered a taxi from the official taxi rank. Following some discussion and a lot of hand gestures between the drivers about the location of our hostel, our taxi pulled up and out popped a man that I can only describe as being a dead ringer for Buddha. How his taxi supported his weight, plus four western tourists is beyond me, but it did, and 15 minutes later we were deposited in front of a blue door and wished an enjoyable holiday by Buddha. ... read more
