What's not to love? The streets are clean, the people are friendly and there is so much to do! We arrived jaded after a nightmare journey from Goa, via Mumbai (for 12 hours) to Delhi and on to Hong Kong. The lesson learned from the trip, is that there is a reason why weirdly connected flights are so cheap. After a sleepless night in the waiting area of Mumbai airport, we closed our eyes in Delhi and woke up in Hong Kong. It was like waking up after a bad dream. You are left with the faint knowledge that something happened that you didn't like, but you are so happy to be awake and in a nice place that it doesn't matter anymore. Our eyes nearly popped out of our heads as we tried to drink ... read more

Asia » India » Goa » Candolim March 9th 2010

After leaving New Delhi on a high, we boarded a Spice Jet plane to Goa, on the south west coast. We grabbed a prepaid taxi from the airport, and a short hour later we were dropped in the very touristy town of Candolim. We had already noticed a change in the feel of the place on our car journey from the airport, but when we looked at our accommodation, it warmed our hearts. The rest of us was pretty warm too. The heat, even at 5pm, was a sticky 32 degrees. Our accommodation was an ensuite room with fridge and balcony, overlooking a garden of palm trees. It was an oasis of calm. We settled our things and then went off to discover the town. We had read online that Candolim has a large supermarket. Given ... read more

By the time we had reached Delhi Philippe had caught up to me in the feeling rubbish stakes. Outside the train station we paid wildly over the odds to a taxi driver as neither of us were in the mood for negotiation. He eventually found the Grand Park Inn in Karol Bagh and left us 200rupees lighter for his trouble. Our room was ready, and it was fantastic. Realistically, it was probably no better than a regular business hotel room in Europe, but after the filth of the last few places we have stayed, the sight of a “Sanitized” sign on the toilet nearly made me cry! There doesn't seem to be a middle range of hotels in India. You either stay in the budget places, or fork out over a hundred dollars for a room. ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Agra February 21st 2010

After our unusual welcome to Agra, the train dropped us at Agra Fort station at 6.15am. We took our time to get our bearings before finally getting a tuk-tuk to take us to our pre-booked hotel. A minute up the road a guy with slicked back hair hopped in with the driver and began to talk to us. He was very chatty but we were in no mood to talk. I needed a place to rest, having gotten no sleep the previous night due to my dodgy stomach. The greasy guy attempted to convince us to hire him as a guide during our time in Agra. We flatly refused, on the grounds that I was ill and wouldn't be going anywhere until I was feeling better. The real reason was that he made us feel uncomfortable ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Varanasi February 18th 2010

Father Anthony had invited us to come and spend some time in the seminary that he runs just outside Varanasi. We politely declined, mostly because I was beginning to feel ill, and was in desperate need of a bathroom, but I didn't want to confess this to the priest! He gave us his phone number and encouraged us to ring him if we had any problems while in Varanasi. We shook hands and then he was lost in the crowd of passengers. On the platform we rang our hostel to avail of their free pick up service. We were told to find the tourist information bureau and wait for them to arrive. Thirty minutes later a guy arrived and guided us out of the train station and into a waiting tuk-tuk. The tuk-tuk took off into ... read more

Asia » India » West Bengal » Kolkata February 16th 2010

Before we left, I think we had some ambition to be landed in a place that was a complete unknown for us. Well, it is safe to say that we have found it! Up until now, all through our trip we have seen the ads by the the India Tourist Board singing about “India, Incredible India...”, and based on our first hour in Kolkata (Calcutta) I have to agree with them. It is definitely incredible, in that it has to be seen to be believed. Why start in Kolkata? It is probably a question we will ask ourselves in years to come. The short answer is that it was the cheapest flight option. It is also a city that I have always wanted to see. Mother Teresa of Calcutta was beamed into our houses regularly as ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Red River Delta » Hanoi February 13th 2010

We had heard so many awful accounts of Hanoi that we were almost put off coming here. It is true that traffic here is incredibly dense and chaotic, but we must have grown accustomed to Vietnamese traffic, because we didn't find this too daunting. As is beginning to be the norm here in Vietnam, we were dumped out of the bus on the side of a street that had no obvious street names. After finding one and searching for it in our guide book to no avail, we just hailed a taxi and got him to turn on the meter to bring us to our hotel in the Old Quarter. The Hanoi Atlantic Hotel deserves special mention because the staff in the hotel was without doubt the most friendly we have encountered on the trip to ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Quảng Nam » Hoi An February 7th 2010

We had an easy day the day after my parents left us. We just chilled out watching English television in the hotel. We managed to rouse ourselves for long enough to buy an open bus ticket to take us up the Vietnamese coast. It is a flexible ticket that allows us to spend as many nights as we like in any of the towns we have pre-selected. The next morning we were collected from our hotel by a grumpy little Vietnamese man. The trip to Mui Ne was only a day trip of five or six hours, so we just settled in for the journey. Mui ne is a sea-side town that is basically made up of one long road that borders the beach. We were let off the bus at the TM Brothers Cafe and ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City January 26th 2010

Philippe rose the next morning after very little sleep due to a stomach bug. Had we not been meeting my parents that evening, we wouldn't have travelled on. But we were, and so he bravely soldiered on, and we hopped on the bus in Phnom Penh. Our trip across the border was a slow and boring process, not due to any fault of either border control stations. Our bus company representative had decided that it was more efficient to collect up all the passports and get them stamped en masse, but still made us claim them back off him at the Cambodian check point to present them ourselves. He then collected them back off of us as we boarded the bus again, and then the bus moved a short distance to the Vietnamese border. We baled ... read more
