After a long, bumpy journey across the north coast of Brasil, we arrived at Belem - 190kms from the ocean, on the river Amazonas delta. Its a crazy city. We arrived from Sao Luis and found a very dodgy but cheapo place to stay for $7 per night (rats included in this special price). This was only a stop to get ourselves ready for the big boat trip up the Rio Amazonas, a 5 (or 6, or 7...) day journey up the world’s largest river. Belem is a crazy, smelly city which has massive market where you can buy fish (you can smell it everywhere in the tropical heat), prawns meat, chicken, fruit, rice, rice rice, beans beans beans, beer beer beer.... oh, and did I mention rice, beans, and beer?
