CLASSIC Gotta say...while I have a hatred for cigars...I really love this shot...an absolute classic! Denise is talking about Cuba as a destination, so thanks for trying out which bars are best!
Cigar heaven?? You might note that the cigar isn't lil because Shelley is allegic to them, but Cuba is a bloody great destination. Get your arse over there Dave.
CHE IS EVERYWHERE We picked up a Che mug at the Propaganda Museum in Shanghai this trip...to add to the Che T-shirts we picked up in Thailand, China, Argentina and Africa on other trips. But clearly the mecca for Che affididoes is Santa Clara, Cuba...hope you guys kowtowed appropriately!
Getting passed around How fantastic that the casa owners set everything up for you, passing you to great casas in the next town and fixing transport! How wonderful too, that the casa/restaurant food is tasty and cheap, so you don´t need to bother with the funky markets. Great adventures and photos-thanks!
hey!!! Great to hear your having a relaxing, enjoyable time. Ahhhh.... the Caribbean. Cuba looks and feels chilled out. Sounds like the perfect wind down after 15mths on the road. The people sound lovely, as do the home stays. Nothing like good home cooking and plenty of it!
I do love the american cars...I think I want one? strange croc sandwhich?, looks sort of tasty though.
xx
OMG ... so jealous!!! Please stop having so much fun because we definitely can't make it there :)
Great to hear you're having an amazing time though!!!
We're in Pucon at the moment but Ken is sick in bed, so we haven't done much yet. I'm contemplating doing a bike ride today but it's 10am already and I'm also still in bed. Hmmm ... to go and do some exercise, or to stay in bed ... it's a tough choice!
Cuba So the travellers are now in the Caribbean. Does that mean you have completed your mapping of South America and are now mapping Central America and/or the Caribbean? Sorry I've been away myself so not in touch since the New Year.
hello!!!!! Wow! looks and feels like an incrediable place. Love the idea of the ease/vibe you guys have found in just wandering around the city itself. The cars look amazing! How cool are there!
Andi just mentioned that he will be considering Cuba on his trip o/s this year. you\'ll definately have to give him some tips on it and Peru, when your back in Oz..
Am lovin you both back on line too, cant wait to see more of Cuba xx
Crazy bus trip Hey there, I read your post on the trip from Villamontes to Asuncion with impending dread! My girlfriend and I are in Tarija and are about to head off to Villamontes to try catch the bus to Asuncion. I hope we have more luck than you and that there are two busses to the capital and not just one. Can you give us any advice as to making the trip more bearable? What time did the bus leave Villamontes?
Hope the travels are going well and thanks for an entertaining read.
Matthew
More bearable......fly. Cannot remember exactly when we pulled into Villamontes but it was still dark and we think it may have been around 4am. Make sure you get covers for your backpacks as ours got covered in dust. Make sure you get stamped into Paraguay, we almost missed that one as no one is really there to hold your hand and point the way. The pointless bag searches are fairly annoying but there isnt much you can do about it. Takes lots of toilet paper and water as there are no regular food/toilet stops and all meals were served on the bus...yummy.
Despite the bad press we found Asuncion a fairly nice town, except for the traffic noise. I hope this helps and if you have any questions please dont hesitate to email us. If we are bit slow responding dont panic it is just that we are in Cuba at the moment and the internet is BBBAAAADDDD.
Happy travels
Shelley and Scott
happy days Who coined the phrase "As busy as a Cuban mechanic " . How do they keep those amazing old cars on the road ? I would love to see a photo of you guys hanging out the window of an old taxi puffing on a big fat cigar..
Pleased to see you opted for Casa Particulars over hotels! You will really enjoy the rest of the island, each town has its own charm, and I loved all the spanglish mishaps. You may realize the best food will be found at your homestay, especially as you get farther from Havana. Have a wonderful time!
casa particulars are brilliant Sorry for the long delay in getting back a response but you would know how bad the internet is in Cuba. Found the Casa food sometimes was on the pricey side when compared to outside but it was all was the best quality. Cuba was perhaps the best experience of our trip and the Casa's is the only way to go.
Ripoffs It may have been cheaper to stay in the dodgy end of town and put up with the occasional mugging and they would have been more polite . Hello my name is Ronaldo and I will be mugger for this evening....
What a disaster... That must be why most TBers avoid Venezuela. At least we know now to bring US$ and find that black market currency exchange person as soon as possible.
apartments in caribbean Christmas is a big festival and the people celebrate it on various places. But Caribbean Christmas is something special. For that there should be a good apartment in Caribbean . I could be there in the next Christmas.
Cheerie Christmas!!! Sounds like a geat place! Looks gorgeous, reminds me alittle of Amsterdam, the buildings are gorgeous, and the colours. Nice floating markets and the apartment you stayed in looks impressive.
i can certainly relate to enjoying the freedom of eating and preparing your own food whilst traveling. I always miss my diet when away from home.
Ahhh...a bonus from Georgetown..Tinsel, well done. xx
Happy Christmas & Happy New Year Wow...Christmas in Curaçao & New Year it seems in Venezuela. We had Christmas at Yellow mountain & looking forward to New Years eve tonight in Shanghai with Aspiring Nomad...someone has to do it! Keep up the great work & keep the Aussie flag flying.
Bloody Frank! Sounds like a fabulous place to visit. It makes such a difference when people in general are helpful and friendly, lightens the load.
looking good there Scotty with the ole parbo coolant.
The president sounds like a awful human being, go figure. How does it all work???
nice! I couldnt help to notice how blue the sky was in a few photo's. Very Blue!
Timing may have been out for the turties but getting the car was gold!!!
I like the fixer upper.

The only thing better than drinking beer while at the supermarket is America...There is nothing like going into the drug store and getting medication for your chest infection plus an inhaler for your asthma and a packet of marlabro reds without an eyelid raised...
Papillion I do remember a movie where some guy escaped an island floating on a raft of coconuts , while in the background there was Bill Collins in a G string waving him off...Well thats my recolection..
Stop! Hey,
You have got to stop going to places we haven't been or will not get to on our trip. Donna is getting jealous and our "in the future" list is getting longer!
