Is there coffee in Tehran? Lets hope so :), Those troglodyte houses sort of remind me of earth ships, you know, made from recycled materials and earth connected more than some. I sort of like them.
I love it when it snows unexpectedly, as long as I'm prepared, that doesn't make sense haha. Hope you feel better soon Scotty and get that coffee, dang!. I'm loving all these interesting places your visiting. I found the caffeine free little jibes in this entry hilarious. Thanks for that!
The Silver Fox What a great story...you just have to chuckle at these things. Often times people want their picture taken with Dave because he is tall. Mis-guided by the lonely planet...that happens. When we made it to Switzerland yesterday we met up for dinner with a fellow travel blogger. She wanted to know where we wanted to go for dinner and we said anywhere except Middle Eastern food....a month was enough for us. So glad the guy from the pharmacy took time to help Scott....don't need any big issues on this trip. We will continue to follow your adventure.
'flat bloody bread'... How much are you guys going to enjoy that first brekkie of leavened bread and a good coffee?? :) Tabriz looks bleak, hope your time in back in Tehran is warmer in every sense of the word.
Finally get coffee It is starting to show that we have spent too long in the one region. In a different town this morning and finally got a coffee, Yippppeeee.
Loving it! I am so impressed with these mosques!!! My god! How fortunate are we of 21st century to still be able to witness such master builder attributes of 1,000 or less years before. I'm loving the pictures of all these places and all these amazing sites! Thank you so much guys. Outside of the occasional hiccup, taxi driver weirdo, L/P outdated info. I imagine you are both
finding this trip absolutely fascinating and rewarding. I'm really loving it! xx
Thanks Traudy, Iran is pretty amazing and easy to photograph. Yea we keep whinging about how hard this is, but you know that the worst day of travelling is still better than your best day at work. When we get some decent WiFi again we need to email you to get an update.
Shiraz....Save the Bears!!!! Absolutely fascinating!!! Shiraz and its surroundings look and sound incredible. Just beautiful, loved the pictures and the information, thank you guys!. So good to hear that the locals are warm and you got to sit and eat in a traditional home. Yeaaahhhh!!! Lets save the bears! xx
Going boldly You've really done your research and are going where few have gone. The blogs are interesting and the cathedrals and mosque have such character. I would not want to fall asleep on the bus and wake up with the pooch snarling at me. That could be a heart stopper.
Face to face with a sniffer dog It was one of those moments you wished you had your camera ready, and on the right setting to catch the speed of him bolting off the bus. We felt sorry for the poor guy but sure did give us a good laugh.
Torture and hell! There's a scene in my favorite film, The Seventh Seal, where an artist in the Middle Ages is painting scenes of torture and hell, and explains that people would rather see that than a naked woman. This may also have been familiar to Christian Armenians uprooted from their land to work in Muslim Iran.
Hell I thought it was amusing that there seemed to be a lot more wicked women going to hell than wicked men. Was it that the artist enjoyed painting naked women, or was it that they just thought women were more wicked?
Fab photos in the land of high prices! Love the domes and bridges and tiles and spices--rather makes up for seeing so many women in chadors, dealing with carpet sellers and paying such high prices. $48 for a room and no breakfast? Sydney prices for coffee? At least the mosques and churches weren't as outrageously expensive as the museums on your earlier stops. And how great for you that tourism is down--you can roll in late in the evening and score a palace of a room! Good show!
Incredible sites! What lessons in history and beautiful sites to make it come alive! Love monumental Persepolis and the beautiful mosques (many more on your next stop, for sure). So glad people were friendly and interested in you, you finally had some delicious, real Iranian food and got to meet a family--a proper cap to Shiraz!
The Heart of it Wouldn't it be great if we actually knew how many miles we had walked while traveling. Wouldn't it be great if taxi drivers believed us when we lied to them. You peaked our interest in the locations. We will have to give that some thought.
small white lies We only lie to taxi drivers so as not to hurt their feelings, and it is also fun. You may need to get to Iran before November as the international political scene may change.
Gorgeous! Absolutely love the look of this town and Shelly you look so good in blue. The architecture and detail of the mosques is amazing, I love the earthy and contrasting bright colors. Hope your feeling better Scotty. love traud xx
feeling better Thanks Traudy we are now both on the mend (after I gave Shelley a good dose). My next adventure will be to get a haircut, and when I do we will post photos.
So no wine was had then? :) Thanks for the historical details...I've heard many of those names and terms bandied about, but haven't been able to put them into context. Hope you get to eat in more Iranian homes, and for the sake of the poor bears I also hope the Save the Brown Bear group were legit.
The Brown Bear They gave us a web address but it seemed to deal more with ecotourism and other stuff and not much about the bears, so we are not to sure and didn't bother putting it on our blog. We have our fingers crossed that it is legitimate.
Iran Looks like you are having a great experience. Hope Scott is feeling better soon. It is always interesting when you struggle with the communication. Some things are universal. Enjoying your adventure in Iran.
