Maasdam was scheduled to dock in Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island about 9:00 AM this morning, about the time we were waking up. This tour-free day for us is certainly starting out at a leisurely pace. As I checked the booty that Sharon’s raffle ticket had won in the casino the night before, I was happy to see that the T-Shirt was an XL-size, and the hat was a nice one too. That’s when I couldn’t find the baseball hat from Niagara Falls that I’d been wearing. We had to rush to get up to the Lido to get there in time for the open buffet breakfast. Sharon had her French toast and bacon and I waited quite a while in the omelet line, as the gentleman at the front ordered up not just one, but ... read more

I went up to the gym for my morning workout around 7:00 AM to discover quite an early crowd already burning calories. I finished on the treadmill with only fog to be seen outside. I had to juggle the order of my workout to follow to allow some of the machines I wanted to use to free up. Afterwards, we went up to the Lido for breakfast. I picked up a bowl of Swiss Style Muesli and a bowl of fresh fruit, and then went outside by the pool where pancakes and crepes were being served to the tunes of the fiddle tunes being performed by the couple that had graced the Showroom Stage the night before. Sharon had some pancakes, whipped cream, powdered sugar and chocolate shavings with her potato cakes and bacon. I decided ... read more

I awoke without any artificial stimulus prior to 6:00 AM and rose to do some work on the blog. I went up to the Lido Deck to work out in the gym at 7:00 AM, expecting it to be empty after the time change; but, it already had nearly ten people working out on the cycles, treadmills, weights and machines. Halifax was just the slightest shiny sliver on the horizon. After working out on the treadmill, and doing some arms and legs on the machines that HAL does have, it was time to get cleaned up for breakfast. Breakfast service in the Dining Room lasted until 9:30 AM this morning, and we were just arriving at our berth in Halifax as we went up for breakfast. They asked us if we’d mind sharing a table with ... read more

The wakeup call Sharon requested rang shortly after the alarm I’d set on my phone alarm for 5:30 AM. We went up to the Lido to eat before meeting in the Showroom for taking a tender ashore for our whale watching tour. I had some Swiss Muesli, grapefruit juice, cantaloupe, watermelon and some rolls; while, Sharon had a chocolate croissant with her French Toast. After breakfast we gathered ourselves together, and went to wait for our tour in the Showroom. Unfortunately, they announced that our tour had been cancelled due to rough seas in our whale watching area. So, we are going to have another leisurely day, walking around town a bit, and we’ll need to take it from there. We decided to go ashore later, and stopped by the library to pick up today’s Sudoku ... read more

We approached Boston, and the captain did an excellent job of keeping guests comfortable; because, we never were inconvenienced in any way by Hurricane Arthur. I decided to postpone my work-out until after breakfast since the Rotterdam Dining Room would close at 8 AM when disembarkation of departing passengers was scheduled to begin. We spotted Sara and Charles in line just behind us, and asked to be seated with them. It was nice to have a chance to say goodbye to our Penguin Spotters teammates. And we agreed to continue to use the team name on future cruises, including our return leg to Montreal. Charles thought that perhaps in Southern Waters when they cruise with HAL to Antarctica, perhaps they should modify the name to Polar Bear Spotters. I did get my workout in the gym, ... read more

We enjoyed the extra hour of sleep as we awoke this Fourth of July. I got the gym again this morning, concentrating on the arms today. When I got back, there had been an announcement that we can clear US immigration at any time up in the Exploration Lounge. We decided not to wait for our 9:15 AM appointment, go there now, and then head to the Dining Room for breakfast before it closes at 9:00 AM this morning. I went with the oatmeal and banana and the Frittata Italiano again, and Sharon had French Toast. We met another couple, Vivian and John at our table for eight were from California. We exchanged contact info, as she expressed an interest in the blog that we write. The Captain announced over the PA system that due to ... read more

I set my phone to wake us at 5:30 AM; but, must have left with roaming on and somehow it decided the actual time was an hour ahead of what it was. When I got out of bed at what I thought was 6:00 AM and planned to head for the gym, I realized what happened. Instead of going back to bed, I finished yesterday’s blog before going up to work out in the gym, concentrating on legs today. When that was done, Sharon and I went up to the Lido for breakfast. We had an early tour that needed to be ashore at 9:15 AM. I had a couple of bowls of Muesli and Sharon had some French Toast. Afterwards, we checked out the menu for the Dining Room, where it is the second “Formal ... read more

We had another lazy morning, with no scheduled tours today. I went to the gym and had a workout on the treadmill, and five of the machines for exercising the arms. We arrived in the Dining Room just before they finish seating at 9 AM. I got a bowl of oatmeal with bananas and opted for the Eggs Benedict; while, Sharon had the American Breakfast with scrambled eggs and bacon. After we ate, we checked the dining room menu for this evening, and Sharon was happy, so I guess we won’t be doing Canaletto this evening, the optional Italian restaurant offered for a $10 surcharge. With her 4-star status, Sharon should qualify for half-price when we do go. We went to the library and did the Daily Sudoku puzzle. Neither of us made any mistakes today; ... read more

This morning, we kindred spirits arrived in Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island before 8 AM. I had managed to drag myself out of bed in time for my first work-out in the gym on the Lido Deck, and enjoyed seeing the red soil of Prince Edward Island approaching on our left. The island drew ever closer as I worked out on the treadmill with quite a few others, who were all running at a blistering pace; while, I walked along at 3.6 MPH enjoying the outside view, not minding that reception for the channel covering Wimbledon was no better here than in our cabin. We had breakfast in the dining room, and again I enjoyed the Swiss Muesli, along with the Frittata Italiano and I added some link sausage and toast. Sharon ordered one slice of ... read more

Monday morning started our first and only “sea day” on this leg of the cruise as we make the passage from Quebec City to Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island. And it began with a late start, after setting the clocks ahead one hour for the next time zone, with Sharon exclaiming “Is it really eight o’clock.” The importance of 8 AM is that on sea days mass is held at… you guessed it: 8 AM! It was ten minutes before eight actually, and Sharon rushed to get herself presentable, rushing off to find about twenty others had also gotten up for mass. Every priest that we’ve had on HAL cruises has been memorable, special and even a little quirky sometimes in their own special way. Father Dan is no exception. Yesterday he told of how he ... read more
