Really enjoyed reading this piece! I've always wanted to walk a long distance path in England - so I found your blog inspiring. When's the next installment coming? Great photos as well.
Yeah, it's sometimes hard to try and describe China to people who haven't visited without sounding as though you hate the place, because in my opinion it's the difference in politeness and the gritty dirt that make the country so enthralling.
As for my wife...........no she isn't Chinese, she's American............did you think she was Chinese from what i was saying?
Your welcome........I hope it was a successful business trip.......hopefully once this episode of travelling is over with, i'll be able to obtain a job where i can travel professionally from time to time too!

Thank you very much.........I'm sure if I went to both China and Hong Kong in 10 years time, my views would change, as China's government seems to be doing a lot right now to try and educate Chinese people on the behaviour and politeness of people in the West.
I hear you! I have been in China for 2 years now & have signed on for another. Your blog reflects many of the things I have written about in my Travelblog, all those things that you love & hate, that appall & amaze constantly. Let me know if any friends of yours who have never been here even begin to understand this place..... I'm interested to know, (after your paragraph about the whingeing Poms), whether your wife is Chinese.....
Teavel experience This is one of my memorable movements in Hong kong. I have been to Hong Kong on a business trip regarding a conference in the months of Dec at Christmas time it was awesome visiting the place. I love the view of the skyscrapers, looking from such a high form skies looks like i am floating in the sky and the street functions like dancing decorating's and what not the under water see aqua, zoo, Beaches every this rocks
Thanks for the sharing such a variety of colorful scenarios.
LOL i was shocked and mortified when i entered a public toilet in china when i saw that the cubicles didnt have doors and i saw men shitting. I really had to pee but i hurried to get away asap after peeing. It was the weirdest thing. But your experience i totally did not expect! The cultural difference is just mind blowing
Lovely read ive been to hongkong and its fun but i saw it as just another city. I didnt even notice how different the culture and laws were from mainland china. But now that you mentioned them, yes the people were more polite and hygienic in hongkong. Thanks for sharing. Its very well written
Thanks very much for your advice........Giardia isn't pleasant at all.........although a great answer for weight loss! :)
Since the incident all has been well. I'll remember this for next time though.
I'm glad to see i'm not the only one with Chinese toilet stories...........the squatting is a lot easier than it looks!
It seems travelling through China, no two days are the same......you can never get bored that's for sure.
TOILET TALK-ALWAYS MAKES ME LAUGH! Hi Adrian- a beautifully penned account...had me giggling to the end. I too have travelled throughout rural China - I could visit again & again. My toileting has been of great interest to many chinese women - they seemed genuinely interested in my sqatting style -it wasn't unusual for them to call their relatives over for 2nd opinion & discussion. keep on blogging I enjoyed it! :-) denise
Rotten egg belches Just for your info... Glad to hear that your guts appear to have recovered. However, rotten egg belches immediately suggest Giardia. This protozoan infection may come/go and - in my case - required meds to get rid of it for good.
No problems with visibility........ .........yes we had no problems once on the top of Huang Shan with visibility, and no one mentioned this as a problem when we visited. I could envisage ice and snow being a problem at times though, especially if wanting to hike to the top of the mountain instead of taking the cable car. I hope you go.........the views were unbelievable.......photos can't do it justice.
Having spent several years travelling around the world, living in far reaching destinations and sampling differing cultures and lifestyles, I am now planning my next major travel adventure.
Starting on June 25th 2011 my wife and I will walk from Land's End at the south-western tip of England to John O'Groats, located at the north-eastern tip of Scotland. This is a 1200 mile walk and will take approximately three months to complete. This walk will be for charity and we will be raising money for the charity Association for International Cancer Research (AICR) (ht... full info
