It is clearly no secret to anyone who knows me, or has ever met me, or even has just casually passed me in the street that I am a chocoholic. So when I saw that there was a chocolate festival in Perugia I knew that I had to go. Also, to anyone who knows me, it is no secret that I am a professional procrastinator, so naturally I did not actually book the trip till the night before. BUT nonetheless I booked it in time! (We can just call it spontaneity, not laziness) Meredith and I, with the accompaniment of two other brave Bentley girls, headed out at 8:30am with nothing on our minds but the sweet chocolate concoctions that we would be devouring today. Now let me explain a little bit about the Eurochocolate Festival. ... read more

So once again our trip was set to leave Thursday night which means another one of Paola's meals missed. Every time that I have to miss one of her meals I do shed a couple tears I can't even lie. But being the absolute gem that she is, I came home from class and she made me and Meredith sandwiches wrapped in tin foil with two pieces each of kiwis, clementines, and a mystery fruit. All packaged up in a plastic bag with napkins on my bed. Literally so cute. Meredith and I pumped ourselves up for our upcoming 13 hour bus ride to Barcelona, Spain. Since our bus was leaving at 8pm and arriving in Spain at 9am my determination to sleep was high....which is why I ended up sleeping on the floor of the ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany October 2nd 2011

This weekend was the relaxing trip through Tuscany with our school. It was a grand tour of Arezzo, Cortona, Pienza and Montepulciano. You may or may not recognize some of those names. Movies such as Under the Tuscan Sun, Life is Beautiful, and YES Twilight: New Moon. Ok so I will continue on about my trip. We left at 730am for our bus to Arezzo. The bus didn't end up leaving till 830ish and we got to Arezzo around 930/10ish. I have finally gotten used to sleeping on the bus! We got to Arezzo and began our tour. We saw a bunch of churches there, which was beautiful and this weekend they are having their famous antiquity markets which is just like one giant yard sale of antiques. It was cool to walk through. But naturally, ... read more

With no plans set for the weekend at all, Meredith and I looked at this weekend as an open opportunity. We decided that we would attempt to explore Italy a little bit more. On Friday we decided to have a roomie date day and have adventures around Florence. Our two main goals: pizza and gelatto (yes I am gaining weight, thank you for asking). But not just any pizza and gelatto, the BEST pizza and gelatto in Florence. The best reigning pizza, according to students and random Italians that we happen to ask, belongs to Gusto's Pizza across the Arno River. It is run by 5 brothers and they have only one brick oven. After what seemed like an eternity of waiting for a reasonable lunchtime to come we made our way towards the river. Within ... read more

Ohhh the Amalfi Coast. After my one class on Thursdays, Italian, I ventured back to Paola's house to pack. 3 full days of hot hot sun and fun (after an 8 hour bus ride through the night). Meredith and i made the 25 minute treck from our house to the train station with one backpack and our duffle bags in hand. Well, technically we started cradling our duffle bags after about 2 minutes because they were so heavy. Naturally we were running a bit on our own time but luckily a group of girls were from Bentley and we caught up with them on the walk (casual run to be more truthful) to the train station. At the station we met our trip guides and our fellow trip goers. There was apparently 100 students total between ... read more

So currently I am on the train on my way to Cinque Terre. I literally feel like I'm on the Hogwarts Express, I've never been on a train before! The first part of the walk between Riomaggiore and Manarola is called "Lovers Lane", which is ironic because it’s just my roommate and I going on this. I hope for both of our safety that there aren’t too many happy couples there or that there are fences over the cliff. Just kidding…kinda. So I was asleep on the train and some guy woke me up to sit across from me. I am SO mad!!! Like who does that? There were other seats. Meh now I'm grumpy and can't sleep since I'm going to be convinced he's watching me. Still about an hour to go on the train... ... read more

After a perfect night sleep on what seems like a tempurpedic bed Meredith and I woke up around 10:30 and enjoyed breakfast together which Paola leaves fro us before she leaves for work. Its basically like a continental breakfast, cereal, fruit, etc. Our plans for the day were to explore and shop. We had a list of some necessities that we had forgotten or needed to get here such as hair dryer & straightener (both require different voltage than american ones have), shower caddies, just random stuff. So we met a couple girls at the Duomo and went from there. What we saw when walking around literally seemed like a joke. One street over is a museum and there are just GIANT statues and lots of street vendors everywhere! This is literally the most beautiful place ... read more

So our cab driver (who had the best flowy Italian man hair I've ever seen) was whipping through the back road of Florence and pulled into a large square with the biggest, most beautiful building I have ever seen. As I gawk at this beautiful structure the car stops. Meredith and I give him confused looks as he tells us this is where we live. He takes out our bags and we stand there frozen as we look back and forth between the Basilica and our door. Finally after we take our jaws off the ground we work up the courage to ring the bell. Paola our host mother comes down to meet us. She is about 5 feet tall (if that) with short grey hair, large stylish Italian glasses, and speaks little to no english. ... read more

Our last night in Tuscany was very relaxing. Our entire group had dinner on a rooftop restaurant and it was absolutely delicious and the view was indescribable. I am going to steal other people's pictures and I'll put them up! You would be so proud of me for how adventurous I am being with the food. Alot of times when we have these big group dinners it consists of three courses and they don't tell us what they are bringing out since the dinner is organized by our teacher. The order of courses here is first course is always pasta, second course is carne (meat) with bread, third course is insalate (salad) and patate (potatoes), and then if we're lucky we get dolce (desert) after that. Literally it's an absurd amount of food and I've never ... read more

So as my last day in Tuscany is quickly coming to a close I have been able to tie together some of the history of the places that I have been to this past week with the help of my friend Alison and translation books. Tuscany Tuscania was one of the main towns within the Etruscan empire, and there are still various Etruscan remains that can be seen around the town. Our Italian teacher Mario pointed out walls that date back to around the 7th century on our tour. He told us that they are currently archaeological sites and that the people excavating them find ancient artifacts and tombs pretty regularly. Tuscania is a beautiful town and looks as though it could be in a movie. However, we are here in late August and that means ... read more
