For our final weekend before heading home, Sophie and I headed to Durban for the Friday night. We went out for dinner at the local pub with the majority of the crew and then relaxed outside back at the guesthouse. That was interesting as we lost power at about 9:30pm.. At about 11pm, I got convinced to go out with Vanessa, Linden and Simba. We met Inger out at the local bar, Amsterdam. It was a fun night of drinking a bit too much beer and having some good laughs. We were kicked out as the bar closed.... lots of fun. Saturday morning I didn't have a hangover, but could definitely feel that I had been drinking. Took our time in the morning and then Sophie and I headed down the coast south of Durban to ... read more

This weekend we didn't head to Durban, instead after we finished work on Friday, we headed straight to the Amphitheatre backpackers in the Northern Drakensberg. A slightly longer drive than we expected, but not too bad. We arrived before dark, so it was all good. The backpackers was a bit like a flash packers place. It had a jacuzzi inside the bar area, a gorgeous rock pool outside, along with a braai area. A loft upstairs with couches and internet. Plus the view was pretty good. Lucy and Bonnie met Sophie and I later in the evening. We spent the evening catching up, before the others went to bed fairly early. Me (the oldest by far), stayed up for awhile longer and chatted to some other travellers. Next morning we headed into the Royal Natal Park. ... read more

This weekend we didn't go off on any wild adventures exploring South Africa, rather we spent the time in Durban. This was actually really enjoyable. I'm glad we are spending our weekends exploring, but I also wish we had more time to explore Durban. There are just not enough weekends. Friday afternoon Inger (the student liaison officer), helped me get some more off my asthma preventative medication, seretide. It was funny because this is a drug that requires a prescription in South Africa (as in Australia), but somehow we managed to get it without one.. Gotta love SA and Inger was a bit of a star!! In the evening Sue (the director of Woza Moya), picked me up and took me for dinner and drinks at her house. I had very generously given Sophie my cold, ... read more

The Weekend - St. Lucia: After our first week at Woza Moya, we drove back down to Durban on the Friday afternoon. It was great to catch up with the rest of the group. Friday night half of the group went to a party of a work colleague, and the other half stayed home. I was one of the home bodies. It was really nice just hanging out at home. We had a few drinks, chatted and watched crap tv. Eight members of the group had decided to go to St. Lucia, a town famous for its hippos, north of Durban. I was driving Sophie, Vanessa and Bonnie because we had decided to go via a game park, Hluhluwe iMfolozi. We left at 6am. It was great leaving at that time because there were less cars ... read more

Week 2 Monday morning we went to Oxfam to meet Sue, the founder and director of Woza Moya. We would follow her car up to Woza Moya. She was immediately incredibly welcoming, it was lovely. She greeted us with a hug and I immediately felt comfortable with her. After stopping on our way to pick up two chickens for Woza Moya (the others had been killed by a local dog), we arrived there at about 12noon. We were given a quick tour around the centre and had a quick introduction to the other staff. We then headed to the Buddhist Retreat Centre (BRC), as this would be our accommodation and where we would get all our meals. We arrived in time for lunch and settled down to a delicious meal. Lunches were the main meal of ... read more

So week 1 of orientation and getting to know Durban is over. Tomorrow morning my co-volunteer and I head inland 2hrs to start our placement at Woza Moya. The last week has been really interesting and very busy, but I'm looking forward to actually starting the placement. So what have I been doing the last week. Well I arrived at the Monash South Africa campus on the Saturday afternoon. There are 10 of us students involved in the placement. There are seven girls from Monash Australia and three people from the South African campus. These three are a mixed group. Stephanie is from Germany, Nasreen is from Tanzania and Simba (our sole gentleman) is originally from Zimbabwe, but currently lives in Botswana. When I arrived, three of the Aussie girls were there along with Simba. We ... read more

1 January 2011 Happy New Year!! Today we were attempting to get to Maseru (the capital of Lesotho) in one day. Public transport isn't great, so it was going to be a challenge. Our first challenge of course was getting from our lodge in the middle of nowhere to the main town of Mothoklong. So we got up early, showered and walked out of the lodge at about 7am. Our best option was to walk along the road and hope for a car we could hitch with or a local mini taxi van. Looking around the emptiness, we really didn't have a lot of confidence. Surprisingly after walking along the road for about 10 minutes, a taxi arrived. This took us all the way into town, a lot quicker than our ute ride last night. At ... read more

Drakensberg into Lesotho Friday 31st December 2010 Today we left the beautiful surroundings of Drakensberg to travel over the dramatic Sani Pass into Lesotho. After a slow start we walked 3km's up the road to some ruins where the 4x4 mini taxis apparently wait to pick people up. It was in the middle of nowhere and difficult to imagine that this was a bus stop. We had made a weak attempt to hitch hike on our walk up, but at this point we had decided that it would be rude to try and hitch hike while we waited at the bus stop with the local Basotho people (Lesotho people). The 4x4 mini taxi van arrived at about 11:30, so we were pretty happy, thinking we were going to get to our destination Mokhotlong at a reasonable ... read more

It's Christmas Day and off we head early in the morning to the airport. After a light brekky in the airport we went through customs and were on the plane on our way to Jo'burg by 10:30am. The flight was nowhere near full, with most people moving once we were in the air to ensure they had either 3 seats to themselves or at the minimum a gap between them. We had a guy next to us who for some reason didn't want to move, so after a few hours and when we were eventually over water, we moved to an empty middle 3 seater. One of our lunch meals was turkey, so we had a bit of a traditional Chrissy lunch. The trip was pretty uneventful, V Australia provided good service, good food and good ... read more
