After a good night rest and a good Romanian breakfast it was time again to continue. The motorway ended at Sibiu so now we had to continue on the national roads crossing the Carpathian Mountains. There are 2 options from Sibiu to Bucharest. • The regular road E81, also known as the Olt River Valley • The Transfargarasan My colleagues from Bucharest recommended me to go via the Transfargarasan. According Top Gear this road is the best driving road of the world. It is also forbidden for trucks so you don't need to overtake slow trucks on curvy roads. And the view during the trip is amazing. So all together it is the most spectacular road of Romania. We left Sibiu toward the direction of Brasov. There are no proper descriptions to go to the Transfargarasan, ... read more

After Timisoara the Motorway continued a bit more. Unfortunately it was not finished completely until Sibiu. We had to go trough the old national roads for approximately 70 km which goes trough all villages and mountains. Just before we arrived to the city Deva, we could use the motorway again. Before dawn we arrived to Sibiu. We arranged a pension for our stay, which was called “the green house”. Once we arrived there we realized why it was named like that. The house was painted completely green.  After a short rest we went to the old city center. Sibiu is a medieval and one of the most cultural cities of Romania. In 2007 Sibiu (also known as Hermannstadt) was the European capital of Culture. We enjoyed or evening on some of the terraces of the ... read more

At the Romanian border the queue was not that long. Within some minutes we passed the passport check. When you enter Romania by car you also have to pay for using the roads, like all countries. About the price we cannot complain. 3 Euros for a week. The polite and funny guy behind the desk asked me politely if I could pay 4 Euros instead of 3. The old Balkan methods where you have to pay the police and the border guards are not completely disappeared. But for 1 euro extra I won't cause a lot of noise and beside the guy was quite funny, so we can state that the so called soup money is low enough to negligible. Time to continue the road. Since my last visit there was a very pleasant surprise! There ... read more

Around the afternoon we arrived at Budapest. As we were completely wasted we decided to sleep a bit before we explore the city. Our accommodation was on budget base, so were staying at a guest house with a shared living room and bathroom. We took a nap until 18:00 refreshed ourselves and went out. From our accommodation to the city center is approximately 40 minutes by foot. Since on our path there are many spots for sightseeing, and we didn't want to search for a parking spot in the center, we went by foot. Walking next to the Danube which is dividing Buda and Pest, enjoying the nice view of the bridges and buildings, we felt some rain drops coming down. Time to look for shelter and perhaps combine it with dinner. Beside the Danube we ... read more

Just a regular working day, waking up, go to work, but the most important: switching off the alarm of my mobile. Indication of starting the holidays! After a regular working day, I went to home, loaded my car with my luggage, picked up my mother, who was traveling with me one way towards Turkey, having dinner at my uncles place and it was time to hit the road. The first night I drove the whole night trough Germany, with a nap of approximately 2 hours. The next morning we crossed Austria and entered Hungary. The first destination is Budapest! ... read more

8:30 in the morning, my mobile is ringing. It's my one of my colleagues who came with me from the Netherlands. Where are you? Did you had breakfast yet? We have to leave! Immediately I was awake. I made it just a bit late the last evening and I was not up to date about the agreed time to meet with the rest. Quickly I prepared myself and grab a sandwich from the hotel restaurant and went to the meeting point. All our colleagues were already there waiting for us. With three fully loaded cars we left and drove to the northern direction, towards the mountains. As one of the smallest persons I had to sit on the back and be squeezed with two other colleagues for the next hours, so unfortunately no sleeping during the ... read more

The worst you can take away from people: their hope. Many years ago I crossed this country. Till then it was the worst country I ever saw. Everyone try to steal or scam you. Prostitution on every corner and corruption by police and border crossing. After many years and experience I concluded that in the end you can't blame this people. The worst thing was taken away from them. Their hope. The hope for tomorrow and no one who's reaching a hand to help for a better future. Today Romania it is not more the Romania which I remember in my childhood. Especially after this visit, my view to Romania and Romanians has been completely changed. As it was a business trip, instead of a report day by day, I report more the highlight of the ... read more

Visiting st. Petersburg was quite long on my bucket list. Thanks to my cousin who is as an exchange student in st. Petersburg I had the opportunity to go there with a small group of our family. After all the preparations the day of the journey arrived…. Day 1 At 04:00 AM my alarm clock rings. I woke up and went to the house of my aunt Zubeyde, which was the meeting point with Uncle Emin, aunt Zubeyde and cousin Metow and left from there towards Amsterdam airport. On our way, as usual Murphy's Law, one of us discovered that he forgot his passport. With a rush we went back to pick up the missing passport and drove to the airport where we met our other travel buddies Dogan and Feyza. Both of them were soaking ... read more
