Rio de Janeiro The city remains the most danerous in the world, according to figures. Its repuation made it quite nervous upon arrival. However the people we met and places we went made this seem ridiculous. On fisrt impressions the city was unique in its beauty. It is built around mountains and on the coast. The beaches are astounding and the water warm - it was a pleasant feeling to be able to relax on the beach. The famous copacabana beach lived up to all expectations - although it was full of slimy men walking around in Speedos! We spent the first few days of our tripwondering the streets of Miraflores unimpressed and ready to move on to see the real peru! Catching a 14 hour over night bus seemed daunting, but a fully reclining seat, a waitress serving food and Alvin and the Chipmunks movie helped pass the time. The truth is, it was the most comfortable bus ever! We arrived in Arequipe the next morning. The nights bus ride had been eventful - high on mountain ... read more
