Athens - Day 1 Sunday 8th September We arrived at Athens airport at around 3am and took an hour long bus journey into the city centre which dropped us off opposite the Parliament building just as they were changing the guard. The marble pavement was wet - I thought it had been raining, it never occurred to me that it had just been cleaned. We went to a nearby taxi rank and a driver who already had two passengers told us to get in his cab. There wasn't enough room in the boot for everyone's luggage, but the driver had a bungee cord to tie it down half open. We didn't drive far before all the buildings were covered in graffiti - when I say covered I mean from ground level to as high as a ... read more

The best ever birthday present came this year when my hubby, Glyn, bought me tickets and flights to see Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine in Frankfurt. We were unable to see them in the UK due to various reasons and I was gutted as I’ve been a Jello fan since I was 14 years old and have only seen him sing once – I’ve seen three spoken word performances though, but still… It had been hard for Glyn to get cheap flights from the UK, so as a result we left Stoke at 2am for the three hour drive to Standsted airport. After an hour’s flight, we landed at Franfurt Hahn, an airport no bigger than a chicken farm in the middle of the countryside with the pinkest loos you will ever see. ... read more

Monday 31st December Today is our last day in Copenhagen, so we left our suitcase (we shared one as it costs per bag on EasyJet) at left luggage in the station and went to Tivoli Gardens. Only it was shut. There were no signs telling us so, but shut it was. So we walked through the drizzle to the Hans Christian Andersen Museum and that was shut. Apart from shops, everything was shut. It was rather disappointing as we wandered around in the rain looking for ways to be entertained. At 2pm we met Naja. We'd met her through my friend Jayne on Facebook and now met her in real life. As everything was shut (did I mention this before about everything being closed?) she drove us back to her apartment. Naja's apartment was very homely ... read more

Sunday 30 December Today was a bit drizzly so we were glad to get on a warm bus at 10.15am for a castles tour. There were only 7 other passengers and Glyn and I got front seat on the upper deck - get in!!! We were given headphones as there was intermittent commentary along the road. We passed through Copenhagen and started seeing countryside. Some of the houses were huge and beautiful, it turns out that they were in fact villas (the Danish use the Italian word villa) and ranged from being worth 1 million to 8 million dollars. We were told the value in Kroner but I've forgotten that. We passed by footballer's mansions, valued anywhere up to $20 million. We saw the sea a lot en route and witnessed people swimming in it. There's ... read more

Saturday 29 December Today started well with a Danish guy totally embarrassing himself in front of us, poor bloke. The weather was foggy with misty rain and we were walking towards the Christianshavn Metro station where we were to be met for a walking tour of Copenhagen as booked on Expedia. We spotted the spire of Vor Frelsers Kirke which is extraordinary in that the spiral stairs go around OUTSIDE the spire. As we took photos, a friendly guy said to us "I will run up there and blow away the fog for you!" and then he promptly tripped over a bicycle rack, flipping right over, legs in the air. We asked if he was OK but he was up and sprinting away, his embarrassment making him go faster. When we got to the Metro station, ... read more

Friday 28 December Apart from shops, not a lot opens until 10-11am, so we didn't get up too early today. It was very cold, but the sky was blue. We'd pre-booked a bus tour (Grand Tour of Copenhagen) and got on it opposite Tivoli Gardens. The tour guide was an extravagant large lady in a big red coat and she sung a line of 'Wonderful wonderful Copenhagen' to us. The bus took us around Tivoli, past a multi coloured cinema with ace shocking pink walls. We went past Hans Christian Andersen's statue and saw Rodin's Thinker sitting in a tiny park. We went through Christianshavn and through Kongens Nytorv. We arrived at Amalienborg Slot, the Royal residence before 11.30am, in time for the changing of the guard. Btw, 'Slot' mean palace or castle, which is cool ... read more

Thursday 27 December 2012 OMG, during the flight to Copenhagen I saw the longest bridge I have ever seen, I thought my eyes were deceiving me! It was the Great Belt Bridge, in fact two bridges (1,624 metres long and 6,611 metres long) separated by the very small Sprogo Island. Upon looking it up on Googlemaps, I discovered that there's an even longer one from Copenhagen to Sweden, just under 5 miles long, the Oresund Bridge. Wow. My hubby and I landed at Copenhagen airport around 4.30pm. The first thing I noticed is that there's a lot of info in English and so far it seems many people can speak English. Although this makes life a lot easier, it's also a little disappointing. We took a train to Kobenhavn, the central station of Copenhagen. The second ... read more

Tuesday 28th August We left Los Angeles at 6am to avoid rush hour traffic which starts at 7am and lasts a lot longer than an hour. We stopped on the outskirts of LA for gas and bought subway sandwiches for breakfast. At this gas station, and as I have seen at other gas stations, there’s TV on the actual petrol pumps! This particular pump had a loop of X-Factor trailers. Glyn drove along the 15 until we got to Apple Valley which was totally rough and run down. I then started driving and took a small detour to go on the famous Route 66. The road itself was mostly quite well maintained but very undulating, it was like driving over solid sand dunes and fun for a while. On the road side were many closed businesses ... read more

Friday 24 August Glyn and I got up at 6am to leave at 7am to go to Disney Land which opened at 8am. Disney essentially is for children but we still had fun, although it was a bit saccharine in places. Many of the rides were impressive but not thrilling. Glyn convinced me to go into the Enchanted Tiki Room which was a bunch of fake tropical birds singing cheesy songs, the only word to describe it (apart from awful) is twee. As we were there so early, we managed to get the best rides done within two hours. I liked the Star Tours and Space Mountain. Peter Pan was crap. Glyn was chuffed to finally get some gumbo, which was also a huge portion. Regretfully we went to watch Captain EO, having not researched it ... read more

Wednesday 22nd August We left Elk Grove at 7.30am and soon hit the rush hour traffic which wasn’t so bad, especially as we could use the diamond lane (carpool). We were followed by a police car for a while which is never nice. We travelled down the 50, passing by Charles Manson in Fulsom jail, towards Lake Tahoe and soon the landscape got hilly. There were also lots of trees and the road became twisty and turny. Our satnav, Sheila, disagreed with many of our decisions, but she was wrong quite often. It’s a good job we’d also bought a map! Sheila wanted us to go up to Lake Tahoe itself and when we got on the 88 and 89, she tried to convince us to go down a ravine. We briefly stopped to water the ... read more
