Cool but sunny today, no rain. We went with Tao to Nanshi, the Old Town section, wandered around the shopping area, then to the Yu Yuan, a famous garden built in the 16th century (Ming dynasty) and maintained pretty much the same since then. There was a display of blossoming plum trees going on. I hope that I can upload at least one or two representative pictures. Then lunch at Lu Bo Lang, next to the Bridge of Nine Turnings (they love to put buildings in the middle of lakes so that they can build a zig-zag bridge to get to them.) Plane Trip We left Chicago at 0730, landed at SFO at 1015 (PST), checked in at the SFO Int'l terminal for the flight to Shanghai which took off at 1215. Thus began a 12 1/2 hour flight in a full 747, during which we slept, ate two full meals and a snack in between, played cribbage, read, and sat through or slept through the FOUR full-length movies that they showed. (I woke up toward the end of "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" in time to watch the Spanish Armada get sunk; I also watched all of "Becoming Jane"--good movie! Jane Austen is starting to grow on me. Lynn slept through that one, to her annoyance.) Shanghai's Pudong airport is new, very spacious, and was very empty when we arrived. No problem at customs. We were met by ... read more

Test drive Sitting at home at the end of one more day trying to get ready. I bought a little moleskin notebookwith the intent of keeping handwritten notes, but we'll see how that works. Equally uncertain is whether I or Lynn will keep up a journal like this online. One of the other things we did today was go to the bookstore to stock upon books for the trip, and whatever spare time we have is most likely going to be spent reading quietly--our favorite thing to do with spare time.
