Hello from Kenya Hi Rachel and Simon. My name is PJ and I work with your mum back in Sydney. I'm in Kisumu in Kenya at the moment, so if you are coming through here give me a call on 0729 973 679. How did you go getting permits to see the gorillas - did you do a tour - if so which one?
Thanks
PJ -
pretty random but... caught you guys picture on the title page and just reminded me of travelling through switzerland and interlaken last winter. One of the most beautiful areas I saw in Europe for sure! I think it was the scenic train from Interlaken to Lucern that was also amazing. nice photo and enjoy!
Exciting pictures Now I can't wait for my August safari. What fab photos and so lucky in what you saw. Do you have a whizzy type of camera, should I buy a new one before I go?!
I am interested in your school too. I am a Reception teacher in UK. I lost my husband last summer and when my kids (15/17) leave home I think I would like to go and teach elsewhere. Do you recommend it?
Thanks for the message. We are working at The School of St Jude (Rachel teaches, I am Accountant) in Arusha and found out about this when we heard the head of the school being interviewed back in Australia a few years ago. We are here for a year. You can check out the school at www.schoolofstjude.co.tz. We stayed just near Jambiani when in Zanzibar when we stayed at Paje on the east coast. Nice part of Zanzibar but maybe a little quite as mainly locals and few tourists. There are a few resorts a little further up the beach but is a nice area. Do not know anything about Saadani, sorry. Let us know if you have any more questions. Lots of schools in Arusha area that probably require teachers also - as do most places
Zanzibar & teaching Hi Rachel and Simon:
Just signed on to travelblog as we are travelling from Canada to Kenya and Zanzibar in July (can hardly wait!) Three of us are teachers, so I am intrigued where you are teaching and how you got there. We intend to connect with the Medical Clinic in Jambiani and understand there is a school attached to the organization (people from Canada began the clinic) Can you tell us if you know anything of Saadani (Tent with a View) as we are considering doing a 3-4 day safari there and it is not cheap. Take care - have fun - hope the bug has left Rachel. B
Vienna What you describe as the town hall actually is the Parliament building, recently renovated and re-opened. The Vienna Town Hall is right next to the Parliament, a bit further north.
Hi Jessica, yes it would appear that in most african schools beatings can be the norm, but fortunately at our school its banned. With the kids knowing that phyiscal punishment is not on the agenda the teachers have to find other ways of keeping order in the classroom.
schools so wow these children realy get beaten in school africa is compleatly diffrent from our schools in america but to theme it must be toatly noramal.
What can we do to help Sounds like you are settling in well and it is a huge experience that you will never forget. Reading about the children and their backgrounds just wondering what we could do to help. simon - we talked before you left about sports equipment etc for football 9shirts , balls etc0 vene if it is just soemthing small we could send over that would be fun or something bigger eg books - can you think about it and see if there is an easy way to get something over and then suggest what could make a difference to you.
Keep working on avoiding malaria
Susan

Nestle You saying you didn't venture up the road to the Nestle / Callier Chocolate Factory ???? I think i wouldn't be alive if I didn't take Jo there !
As before, I have loved, loved , loved catching up on your travels - and can't wait for the next installment. Especially loved the pics of Vienna - at last somewhere I had been to and recognised beyond Catriona and pals LOL. You are both looking very relaxed and happy - eternal holidaying really suits you, pity it can't become a career move. In awe and envy - yours, Veronyka xxx
Dachau Concentration Camp Memoria Yes, the words 'humankind' or indeed 'human kind' is a fragile concept. It is not an abstract thought nor unidealatistic, however, when we see so much suffering in the world it is remarkable that there is peace at all in the international community. Truly, a worthwhile endeavour to pursue.
PAX.
Great to see you having a good time. Cripes me Old Mate Nephew and his lovely Bride Rachel you sure both look as though your having a great European Tour, and not a Roo or Dingo in sight Mate. Take it easy on those Alpine roads, those hair-pin bends can be very Hairy....Auntie Lizzie and meself are following in your foot steps at the end of August driving down through the Rhine to Seefeld in Austria (Near Innsbruck)...If you find yourselves in Innsbruck go up into Seefeld on the mountain railway and back...its fantastic...Take it easy no worries and lots of love and sloppy kisses from your Old Uncle Billy and Auntie Lizzie..xxx.
