That green stuff looks like moss but is actually hard like stone

Great adventure and photos!
Good for you, translator--you'll soon be speaking like a native! I was also the translator for my French-speaking group, which was pretty tricky. Love that you got to see flamingos! That hard, green stuff in this photo is Yareta (or Llareta), a plant that grows only 1-2 centimeters a year. Some of these plants are 3,000 years old. In the high puno of the treeless Andes, it's traditionally been used for fuel, but in Bolivia, it's becoming extinct due to overuse. Here in Peru, there's more of it, and it makes a great, hot fire for ceremonies. Enjoy La Paz!

The scenery is very moonscape like, very crisp. I am not sure about the 2 loos and the 1 shower though. Perhaps it is good that it is very cold. Jonty doing amazingly well.

I didn't use the shower! Yes incredible scenery. I spoke to Jonty and Susannah last night. Seems like they are doing very well.

Stunning scenery in the National Park

Breathless
I can't even remember my Spanish so I'll say it in English. You have excelled yourself Rachael...fabulous pics. Mind you with such stunning scenery it ain't hard! Coming from Atacama in Chile into Bolivia by the back door was a master stroke. Also pleased you went a different route to us so you haven't taken most of my pics when I get around to blogging this part of paradise. Continue to have a blast...and looking forward to getting together when you get back to Oz.

Chile
Chile is on our travel list for 2017. That will be here before we know it. We know you have been to S.A. a few times so glad you got to go back and practice your Spanish. Looks so lovely.
23rd May 2015

I haven't seen much of Chile, just Santiago and now San Pedro de Atacama, so it is still on my list! However from what I have seen, it is really gorgeous and I think you'd love it. Dust off the Spanish!!

Let sleeping dogs lie....San Pedro de Atacama

Let sleeping dogs and napping Aussies lie
Good for you for speaking Spanish. You wanted a tip--well, Spanish is it. In Bolivia, they speak much less English than in the adorable, touristed San Pedro. But it's all so fantastic--you'll love the unworldly Salar de Uyuni and the very indigenous La Paz--just go slowly to conserve your breath. Look forward to your impressions!

Let sleeping dogs lie....San Pedro de Atacama

I am certainly getting a lot of Spanish practice which is good for me. You're right, Salar de Uyuni is amazing, incredible dramatic scenery and I loved it. I'm really looking forward to getting to La Paz tomorrow too. And yes, I'm walking slowly!!

Inspiring
Now I need to add South America to the list - dont you just love those blessings in disguise? thanks RJT
22nd May 2015

You really do need to add it to the list, the scenery is stunning!

Yes the scenery is amazing but does look very cold. Went to see Jonty today and the improvement is amazing in less than 24 hours he is testing himself and giving himself injections he is one gutsy little kid no moaning there. He was so excited to show me his diabetes kit and the different types of insulin that he has to use his notebook that he writes down all his tests. I was really blown away with his enthusiasm. Hope you are having a great time in Bolivia now. I realise it will be a few days before you can get back to us. Love Jackie
22nd May 2015

Just arrived in Uyuni and there was more amazing scenery and even colder weather! Glad to hear that Jonty is getting better and figuring out the insulin all by himself. We are going to La Paz in the morning so will try to get in touch in the weekend sometime.

The Tres Marias

Time for two
Nice pic of the Three Marias Rachael...brings a smile when you know what is around you when you take the shot. Excited for you that you are entering Bolivia from the Atacama. Looking forward to your pics...pretty hard not to take good ones! Have a blast.

The Tres Marias

Yes, I am pretty excited about the next little part of our adventure. Isn't the scenery amazing? We will have have to swap notes when I get back. Any tips for now though, let me know! After Uyuni we are heading to La Paz. What an incredible part of the world this is.

Chilled out and optimistic feel
We love going to UNESCO World Heritage Sites. They always have so much to offer. Tracking the Sultans family tree would be a full time job. Love the look on the security guards face.

World Heritage Sites
You're right - I've thought about a world tour of World Heritage Sites before, I think it would be fun. Yes, the Sultan's family tree was amazing! Very beautifully drawn, they are pretty incredible.
