Africa December 24th 2015

Where to begin!.... Sorry guys you’ll have to bare with me in this blog. Not only have I spent 3 hours writing this before only to have accidently deleted it but It’s also been a long road down to south Africa and its been filled with so many things that I’m struggling to keep up. Firstly let me just say this started out as a cheaper diet plan for me. I thought 50 days in Africa would sort out my over the top love for food and my backside.......I was wrong! Even in the poorer countries food doesn’t seem to be an issue as everyone grows their own. So not only have I not lost weight but I’m sure to have put an extra few lbs on because of all the flavoursome foods! Right back on ... read more

Africa » Zambia » South Luangwa December 24th 2015

23 December 2015 We left Malawi (The Warm Heart of Africa) yesterday to enter Zambia ( The Real Africa). Our fellow Canadian, New Zealand and Australian travellers were once again annoyed that the Irish got away without splashing out $50 for a visa. We on the other had were very smug, not only did we save money the visa stickers would have wasted a whole page on our passport which has an ever increasing number of stamps. We have spent two nights at Croc Valley campsite which had a massive orange river right beside it. We were surprised by how much noise the many hippos that lived there made all day and especially all night. It was quite an experience. I was a little apprehensive when Chris told us it wasn't unusual for hippos to graze ... read more

Africa December 22nd 2015

Okay where to start...... Firstly I'd like to apologise for Robs history lesson!! Lol Karen blixen museum was interesting but more so for the fact she helped to raise employment for 200 workers and gave them land. Bomas village was very interesting as they talked about the different tribes that still exist today in Africa. Many of them have many wives and the famous Masai tribe leader shares his wives with brothers and cousins!!! A man gets more wives the more cows he owns so if you relate that to western standards the more money a man has the more wives and mistresses he'll probably have to. I had to remind Robert he was not from an African tribe and so he can not have any more wives!! His response was one was bad enough!!! The ... read more

Africa » Kenya » Nairobi Province December 11th 2015

We arrived in Nairobi at 15:30 on 4th December. We were surprised how small an international airport can be. As soon as we entered the terminal we were met by 5 visa lines which went fairly fast. As soon as we got our passport stamped we were literally in front of our baggage conveyor and as soon as we left that room we were out! We booked a taxi for 2000 Kenyan shillings (about £12) and headed off to our taxi. We could have got a bus for 40 shillings but that would have increased our chances of getting mugged significantly. On arrival to the Meridian hotel we checked in to a very welcoming reception desk. Everyone was really friendly. We headed for dinner after dropping our bags in our room. We got a lovely selection ... read more

Middle East » United Arab Emirates » Dubai December 5th 2015

We have spent the last 5 days having a great time in Dubai. It's is well deserved after the horrendous experience of trying to get through security at Casablanca airport. It took us 1 hour to get from the train station to the airport building as we all had to shuffle through a single metal detector and xray machine. When we checked in we had to go through passport control which also took forever. Then through security again. Our plane also swapped gates randomly while queueing to get on the plane. So for future reference get to Casablanca airport 4 hours in advance to reduce all stress. Anyway, we spent the first day chilling out and having a movie marathon in the hotel to get over that trauma. On Monday we walked along Dubai Creek (a ... read more

Ouilidia- beautiful, tranquil and peaceful. We got here in the off season and so it was very quiet. It could be quite windy at times but the views made up for it. The lagoon and the cliffs along with dazzling sunsets and clear night skies made this place feel like a little peice of heaven. We stayed in a friendly French hotel, the owner was very nice( I didn't mistake him for a guest this time). We had a tasty meal in their restaurant and went all out with oysters....surprisingly tasty if you don't chew!! We also met a local man named Mustafa, who deserves a special mention. We came across him whilst exploring the long beach and cliffs. He lived on the top of the cliff in a make shift cave he'd built himself from ... read more

Africa » Morocco » Doukkala-Abda » Oualidia November 24th 2015

Just a few notes about the journey so far. Generally the whole experience has been amazing. I think our anxiety and nervousness is starting to subside. We have realised that our grasp of the English language is starting to fade quickly, this blog has been a nightmare to spell for both of us. I usually am the most confident at speaking French (Grade C GCSE 15 years ago) although I do seem to speak a combination of French, English and German which is confusing for everyone involved i.e. Je voudrais two crepe, danke. Marrakech is so busy. Our first experience was when our driver from the airport tailgated everyone the whole way to the hotel. Mopeds and motorbikes snake wherever there is space. And at junctions everyone wants to get to the stop line, so you ... read more

Right!! Where to start! We left Marrakesh 3 nights ago to get to Essouaria. Which is on the coast and has a lovely Medina and harbour. It's also where they filmed scenes for The game of thrones series (for the fans). The Medina smells like fish guts....that's because there is fish guts everywhere. They cut the fish open on the side of the roads to sell they're catch for that day. The place itself is lovely to look at and has a much more laid back and relaxed attitude from Marrakesh. The people aren't trying to put monkeys on your shoulders or ask for money for leading you to places...... Which leads me on to Robert and his map skills again. We got lost when we arrived, we were looking for our hostel but had no ... read more

Africa » Morocco November 19th 2015

So we've spent a couple of days in Atlas Targa 20 minutes outside the city of Marrakesh. It was a nice start as is was very commercial and settled us in to the new climate. It was all inclusive and we got to taste a range of Morocco's traditional meat tagines ( slow cooked foods in a pot called tagine). We are now ready to throw ourselves in to the morrican way of life! We booked into a Riad (guest house) called Riad Romance in the north of the cities Medina. With small winding roads and the risk of being knocked over by the bustle of people or moped's, it would have been impossible to find without the friendly morroccan that lead us down to what we thought was a dead end.... It was but thankfully ... read more

Africa » Morocco » Marrakech-Tensift-El Haouz » Marrakech November 17th 2015

After two years of planning we have finally made it to our first destination. The flight took a bit longer than expected as we couldn't travel on a dented plane and had to wait for a replacement. On arrival to Marrakech airport we met with our driver who totally put us off hiring a car this week. The roads are total chaos and lanes don't seem to have any significance here. Were staying at the atlas targa aqua club. Unfortunately the water park is just for kids :-( Were chilling by the pool today enjoying the sunshine (26*c) and all inclusive hospitality. I hope hurricane barney isn't causing too much trouble back home. I think we may be taking a trip into the old town of marrakech tomorrow. ... read more
