Up far too early with this eternal sunlight down here and my knee is so stiff I can barely move it. After knocking Michelle around for a while trying to get out of the tent I finally made it to the washroom and main hall for breakfast. Coffee is a wonderful thing and again I had my staple of white bread and cheese. Gooooooooo travel diet, the eternal meal in Latin America for veggies! We all pitched in to help Christian 2 pack up our campsite and we got on board the boat for 10:00 sailing back across Lago Pehoe. Everyone helped with my bag as well and we all sat on top deck enjoying the view. Short public bus ride to the start of our supposedly scenic and informative walk to the Information Centre. Today was our day to hike the French Valley, around fresh water lakes, lots of ups and downs, a great lookout on an avalance site as well as wonderful views of the Towers at the top. Definitely one of the more popular legs of the "W" trek, and despite waking up with my knee so stiff I had to swing it straight legged (barely avoiding Michele's head) to get out of the tent, I was determined to go. Today was one of the big hikes 22 km round trip to 2 major lookout points and over the river as well, with lots of different terraine. I ended up doing 17km as I had to give up at the avalanche lookout site after I heard that the next bit was a boulder field for at least a ... read more

The (Bates) hotel continues to not impress; both Michele and I had beds with a top mattress that slid off towards the floor causing a 45 degree angle of sleeping. We both woke up half on the floor half on the bed. Positive? Water pressure was good. Left the hotel at 07:30 to commute on local bus (but not chicken by any standard) with one pit stop (read banos!) thankfully. Arrived at Torres del Paine National Park entrance, and scrambled for a marathon walk to see the waterfall and some lovely views. Unfortunately it literally was a marathon pace and I was struggling to keep up with my bad knee. It was too much too fast I fear and my leg has been going downhill since then. The boat ride across Lago Pehoe took half hour ... read more

Best roommate ever!! I was mumbling when I got up that I'd love a coffee and Michele literally volunteered to get me one from the breakfast room, 3 floors down! I offered to marry her and she said only if she was still single after 40..... I'll keep hoping! Did I mention the kick ass pink fuzzy garbage can cover? SO temped to steal it for my house; I love random silly useless things! Off to the airport and boy what a difference in the crowds. It was obvious that today was a normal work day versus Sunday when we wandered the city. Sky Airlines is who we are flying on and while I do appreciate a free meal (a rarity these days) this one was a bit odd. I loved my salmon coloured bun with ... read more

Day 2 - December 18th Not sure where day 1 ends and day 2 officially begins but we will wing it. Flights were uneventful, however traveling business class will tend to do that (thank you Laurie!) How the hell I'm going to survive economy on the way home I'm not sure, but then again it's not like I have a choice. DFW is a boring airport to kill time in I must say it needs a little something something. Even the people watching lacked luster. MIA was an interesting excursion to say the least. I realized that unfortunately I had to exit the secured area to get to terminal J, which apparently is on the other side of Miami. At the same time this sweet young lady was discovering the same so we ended up walking ... read more

Are we there yet? Are we there yet? I set 2 alarms last night in my paranoia and woke up exactly one minute prior to the first one..... Creepy (but SO Ned style). Second one never went off at all. I have visions of it exploding in the middle of the afternoon(maybe I set it for 4pm by mistake?) freaking the cats out and waking them up from their naps. He he he he So far I cant get the iPad to work with the blog which means I may end up posting all of these after the fact, but will continue to write regardless. Hopefully you all won't hate me for receiving 20 odd blogs all at once:-) I've had 2 people wish me luck trekking Machu Picchu on my trip to Chili and Argentina, ... read more

2 weeks less a day I leave for my 'bucket list' trip to Patagonia and Easter Island. I'm finally getting excited and a little nervous and am thankful for work (for once) to keep me busy. Piled currently on my living room floor is all the stuff I think I need to bring. Of which I'll cram, shove, condense into one wee 60 litre pack. Then I'll take out half of it, add more money, more Lonely Planet guide books then I need and hope I'm good. Ah, the joys of trying to travel as light as possible. Except carry on. That will have my camera, change of clothes, hiking poles, book, ipad, documents, and medication. and several snacks for my 26 hour journey aboard flying metal, because we all know how well they feed you. ... read more

Still reeling from my 12 day trip to the south western states. Dirty, dusty, disheveled is how I feel, but a peaceful deep feeling, knowing I left a small part of my soul behind. It was a work conference, with training built in, and a weekend get away to Moab that I won as an incentive. How to wrap up 12 days into one blog? Not sure I can, but I wanted to mention some of the highlights to go along side my photos. I decided not to bring my SLR as it's bulky and cumbersome, so while my point and shoot I had with me truly doesn't give the landscape justice, I want you to use your imagination somewhat and place yourself standing along the ride of the Grand Canyon. Knowing the basin is so ... read more

Never one to not take on a challenge; when my company offered us an incentive to whomever sold the most and reached set targets by mid July would win a "Gavin-a-licious" 2 day trip to Moab, Utah, how could I not try? So, needless to say; I was one of the winners; 19 of us in total from around the globe, along with 2 other of my Canadian Team members and WOW is all I can say for now! Dee and I left LA after training with Andrea and Paul and had a lovely 06:00 departure on our flight via Denver. So yes, folks that means a 04:00AM wake up call. (insert swear words oh so effectively here). Dee and I stumbled our way to LAX at the lovely hour of 04:25; only to arrive to ... read more

So, home safe and sound, with bags intact. My internal clock, not so much! Fighting jet lag and sorting through my photos, slowly! The day I was leaving I decided I needed a traveling companion; since Jill the Duck was unavailable for this trip. So looking around my car and my collection of animals (once referred to as my zoo) my eyes landed on The Bull (said in an ominous voice), who instantly was named Mr. Pickles. Really, really long story why that name fits so well, but suffice to say Mr. Pickles stuck. SO, while I don't have time to sort through all the photos, I've put together a quick album for Mr. Pickles. Not only did he make a great traveling companion, but he also helped to break the ice in the group, and ... read more
