Peter T - travelings

Hi, I'm from Melbourne Australia. I don't do much personal travel these days, but do travel for business a little. When I get the chance to explore, I do. I'm hoping this travel blog is an easy way to keep my family and friends informed of my travels.

05FEB11 - Head for home. (Apologies - No photos on this last day (or is it two days?)) We wake pretty early this morning, but the late nights have caught up with me. I close the curtain, stopping the streak of light coming through, and quickly fall back to sleep. Heather wakes me with a start at 1030, as we have an 1100 check-out. First thing we do is ask for a late check-out. No problem, we now have until 1200. We pack, check-out via the menu system on the television and then pack the car. Instead of walking the strip again, we decide to drive out of the car park and away from the strip to find a place to eat. I'm sort of stripped out. As we drive up the strip, away from the ... read more

04FEB11 - More Vegas and Brad Garrett This morning, we wake earlier because Heather has to take the truck in for an oil change. So while Heather is gone, I hit the streets on my own. Firstly, I have a quick buritto and coffee at Macas and then move on. These burittos are exactly how I remember them from 1992, when we (Anna and I) were on our around-the-world back-packing honeymoon. They're just a bit more expensive, not much, just a bit. I focus on purchasing a camera. Not the big DSLR I originally wanted, and still want, but rather a small hand held camera that Anna and I can use when taking the big unit is either impracticle or just too much of a pain (I am wondering if these two things aren't the same. ... read more

03FEB11 Another late morning this morning. Tried to update the blog with the missing several days, but failed. The GSM mobile connection is very iffy. I tried to save the pages a couple of times, but failed. Gave up after two hours of trying. I'll just have to update the blog as soon as I get home. FYI, I am actually writing the blog in a text file in real time (ish), because if I don't I'd forget things. In the early afternoon we leave the Flamingo to explore the other side of the strip, which we hadn't got to yesterday. First was the Paris hotel and casino. The front of the Paris is over shadowed by an immense Eiffel Towel, towering over the complex, and well as a fair sized Arc Di Triomphe off to ... read more

02FEB11 - More walking in Vegas then Phantom As we went to bed so late, we slept in this morning. Breakfast is a juice and a muesli bar. We then take off to the Venetian to secure seats for Phantom tonight. We end up on the mezzanine floor, one row from the front, on the aisle to the left of the center. We then continue our exploration of the strip. We cross Las Vegas Boulevard and this time explore the other side of the strip. Some of the larger establishments we explore are Treasure Island, The Mirage, Caesar's Palace and The Balagio. Treasure Island was not much really. Other than the big wooden ships in the front, which are used to put on a pirate show in warmer weather, the rest is basically the casino. Caesar's ... read more

31JAN11 - Travel to Hoover Dam Got up, and a "turkey bacon" and eggs breakfast, just like yesterday. Packed up all my stuff, as I will not be returning to Phoenix on this trip, and got the car truck ready for the road. We hit the road at about 1100 headed to the Hoover dam, on the border of Arizona and Nevada. The trip was relatively uneventful. Stopped at a truck-stop to have a Quiznos, as we may not see another on this trip. Still yummy. This time I had a steak and cheese variety, as I thought I'd try something other than chicken for once. We stop along the highway to take pictures of cacti and Joshua Trees. For the final leg to Hoover Dam, Heather let's me drive. The section that I'm driving is ... read more

Slept in this morning 'til about 0900. Bacon and eggs for breakfast. Actually, it was "turkey bacon" and eggs. Interesting. Not sure about the naming because there is no bacon in Turkey Bacon. I think Turkey Bacon is just thin strips of turkey meat. It certainly doesn't taste like bacon. Just as we're thinking about moving on, we catch an episode of "I Dream of Jeanie" on the TV. It is an episode that neither one of us remembers, so we watch it. It turns out to be a double episode, so we watch the second show as well. It's the one where Tony is sent to some secret location to finish the plans for the new spacecraft, while Dr. Bellows arranges for an agent (who turns out to be a double agent) to impersonate Tony ... read more

28JAN11 Wake up, have breakfast at the motel, as it is included in the price. Not a bad little continental breakfast, consisting, for me at least, of cereal, bagel with cream cheese, fruit and yogurt and orange juice. We head off to see some of the items of interest as advised by the guy at the motel reception when we arrived. First stop, the Chapel of the Holy Cross. This is a beautifully simple chapel set high on a rock. Very nice, very simple. It has an awesome shop (see website) that O'Mama would be proud of. Website: https://www.chapeloftheholycross.com/store/ As we drove into town yesterday, we noticed a shopping strip which seemed to have some interesting looking shops. We decide to check them out. To cut a long story short, we spend a couple of hours ... read more

26JAN11 Heather lets me sleep in. Thanks Heather. Breakfast at the hotel, egg omelet. We drive up to the Grand Canyon, which is only 30 odd minutes away. There was quite a bit of snow on the ground to remind me that the canyon is at altitude. The song Mother and Child Reunion was playing on the radio at one point. Now remember that this is the same date that Bek is to be reunited with Anna. What an amazing coincidence. God seems to be playing games, surely. A bit like the "Little Ray of Sunshine" coincidence of '93 and '94 when the girls were born. Coincidence or something else? Hmm!! We spend the whole day driving up and down the south rim, and a bit of the east rim of the Grand Canyon. We stop ... read more

25JAN11 I thought I slept well, despite waking up a few times during the night. I think I was nervous about making my flight to Phoenix as the alarm clock was not working in the hotel room. I left a wake-up call for 0600. The second time I woke during the night, I looked at my watch to find it was 5:55am. Okay, no point waiting for the call. Get up, finish the last few items of packing (I knew it would be tight this morning so I planned ahead (good boy!). I'm ready to go, check my watch, it shows 4:15am. WT??!!! I ring the desk to check. Yep, it's 4:15. It must have been 3:55 not 5:55 when I checked my watch. The analogue hand was in the way, so I was unable to ... read more

24JAN11 Trouble organising US Airways flight to Phoenix. It won't accept my AMEX for some reason. So I hop on the phone and do it that way. They charge me an extra $25 because I used the phone. I ask for a waiver as the lady helping me over the phone had exactly the same problem, that is, it would not accept my billing address. She has to ask for assistance and takes ages. Apparently you have to put the country in as part of the state or city or something. If she didn't know that, how was I suppose to? Ask for supervisor to see if I can convince them. I get Roxy with a deep voice. A logical calm assessment of the situation follows. Nothing doing. No waiver. Customer service to the max! Will ... read more
