South America » Chile » Arica & Parinacota » Arica March 19th 2014

Geo: -18.4874, -70.3222Didn't know what to expect in Arica. This is one of the driest places in the world. We lucked into a tour with the on-board naturalist to the mountain lake. Claim is the highest unnavigable in the world. We were not sure what to expect. Very pleased to have "post card" pictures of snow-capped volcanoes in the background. Thanks Dirk! Since we were in a van, extra stops were easy. The little stone church is over 500 years old and we had vicuna crossing the road. I need to talk to Dirk to find out the type of bird that was having breakfast beside the ship when we got off.We are up early tomorrow for the highlight. Machu Picchu is Saturday. Hoping for a sunny day like we had in Arica... read more

South America » Argentina March 10th 2014

Geo: -54.79, -68.31A spectacular port. Claiming to be the most southern city in the world. The port is base for most Patagonia and Antarctic expeditions. Mountain ranges are just a short distance away. We did a boat trip to a penguin rookery. Along the way there were sea lions, seals, cormorants and penguins. On the way back we saw Orca. This was a bonus. On the way out in the Beagle Channel, named for the ship Darwin was on, it was late and sunset hit too early to see the glaciers. This has to be one of the most beautiful ports in the world.... read more

Geo: -34.8939, -56.1568Montevideo, Uruguay (Capital) on Tuesday. Both Argentina and Uruguay (& Brazil) have been celebrating Carnival. From what we hear, that celebration was Monday and the recovery day is Tuesday. Both Buenos Aires and Montevideo were empty. Monday and Tuesday in the main center and no traffic. It was nice walking around without having to dodge the traffic. Pedestrians are warned. ... read more
