I had heard about this place; a place you can see rhinos and tigers and ride elephants. Why not? Chitwan is located almost equidistant from Kathmandu and Pokhara, to the south. The National Park borders with northern India. After spending a few days recovering in Pokhara, right after having done the Annapurna Circuit, this seemed like a good place to go to on my way to Kathmandu. I didn't know much about the place and didn't really bother looking at the cheap options. I decided to buy a 3 day package tour with everything included. Went for the easy option. If I had known better, I would've probably just bought a bus ticket to Chitwan (specifically a village called Sauraha), gone to the village, looked for a place to stay (there are innumerable options) and booked ... read more

Day 16 Muktinath to Jomsom: The landscape changed dramatically and it became very arid. The villages looked very green though, like oasis in the middle of the desert. Instead of walking this part of the trail, many people opt to take jeeps, but it's worth doing it, especially if one has the time. A lot of times guides will tell their customers that the road is full of traffic, dust everywhere and too much wind. The part about the wind is true, but just for a few days. The part about the traffic and the dust, it's not bad at all. It took me 4 hours at a rather fast pace to get to Jomsom. I went past Kaghbeni, but didn't go to the village. Apparently it was a mistake, because a few trekkers told me ... read more

Day 10 I set off to Tilicho Lake. I walked the 2 hours from Manang to Khangsar and I thought I would be staying there, but when I got to the place, I didn't like it at all. I had seen in a rough map outside the village that there were other places to stay in, past the village, so I decided to keep on going. I was feeling very tired that day and did not feel like walking at all. The next place I got to was Siri Kharka. I was dead tired after the walk uphill and had something to eat and took a 2 hour rest there. I seriously considered staying there, but then resolved to keep going until I reached the Tilicho Base Camp (TBC). From Siri Kharka to the TBC, it's ... read more

I did the Annapruna circuit in just over 3 weeks. I took my time and did a few side treks as well. So it wouldn't be too long and tedious I broke it up in 3 posts: 1.- Besishahar - Manang. 2.- Manang - Thorong La (including Tilicho Lake). 3.- Muktinath - Pokhara. I wrote about the trek on a daily basis, including some general information, but also personal experiences. At the end of the third post I wrote general information that I thought would be useful; questions I myself had at the beginning of the trek and the same questions I was asked after completing the circuit by other people. If you don't want to read the 3 posts, but are in the same situation I was before doing this, then I suggest you skip ... read more

From Manila I had a flight to Singapore. I arrived there at around midnight and had to wait until about 7am to get my next flight to Kuala Lumpur. In the meantime I had a healthy meal at Burger King and read a book about snipers. I arrived in Kuala Lumpur at around 9am, only to find out that my backpack was missing. Apparently they hadn't put it on the plane (Tiger Airways). I had to fill out a report and hope for the best. My next flight was at 11am to Kathmandu, so I flew with out my backpack hoping to retrieve it in Kathmandu in the next few days. Fortunately during that day, they at least confirmed that they had it. Apparently they had sent it to Kuala Lumpur later that day and when ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Palawan » Coron April 17th 2013

After a short stay in Bohol I took a plane to Manila (from Cebu) and then to Coron. This was my last destination in the Philippines and the main thing I wanted to do there was wreck diving. I didn't know what to expect about the town itself, but nevertheless made up my mind to just stay there for the 5 or 6 days before I had to leave the country. Coron is in Busuanga Island, part of a group of Islands called "Calamian", which in turn are part of Palawan. I arrived at night and started to look for places to stay. People had recommended to me a hostel called "Crystal Lodge", but when I got there, it was fully booked. I then went to a dive shop that a French woman that I had ... read more

From Malapascua I decided to head down to Bohol Island, just east of Cebu Island. In the place I was staying at (Purple Snapper), I had met a French woman, Stephanie, also a dive instructor and she was also going to Bohol, so we decided to go together to share costs. She was good company, had a lot of stories, plus she was an excellent dive buddy to be traveling with. We woke up really early in the morning and went to the beach to get a boat that would take us to Maya (town at the very north of Cebu Island). While we waited in the beach, we were constantly harrased by a pack of stray dogs, which was really annoying. The boat ride takes about 30 minutes and from Maya we had to take ... read more

This post came a bit late and it’s about Malapascua. Malapascua was my favorite destination in the Philippines. But just to give continuance to my last post, I’ll write about the previous days (I left off in Makassar, Sulawesi Island, Indonesia and from there flew to Manila and then went to Malapascua), so I’ll go off topic in the first paragraphs. From Toraja (Sulawesi Island, Indonesia) I had the same 10 hour bus ride back to Makassar. Even though the bus was pretty decent, the guy next to me wasn’t. After 10 hours of him elbowing me, talking loudly on the phone, etc., just before arriving to the bus station, apparently he couldn’t control his bladder any longer and he asked me “permission” to pee in a plastic bottle while sitting on the seat next to ... read more

I arrived in Makassar at about 8pm without knowing where I was going to spend the night that day, but I had the name of a street in which I knew there should be a couple of backpacker places (Jampean St). When I left the airport I was harassed by at least 10 taxi drivers. Most of them were charging 100.000 IDR. I got one that charged me 87.500 IDR. Makassar is a big city with about 1.6 million people. The airport surprised; pretty modern and well maintained, not like the one in Denpasar, Bali. The city also has a big port and a lively night life with lots of karaoke places and clubs. The driver didn’t speak any English. I told him to take me to Jampean Street. When I got to the street, I ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Flores » Labuanbajo March 22nd 2013

After having booked for three dives the previous days, I woke up early in the morning and headed out to the "Divine Diving" shop. There I met the two Indonesians who would be our guides that day – Juffens and Hila. The other divers that day were Bruno and Josette, a Swiss couple in their mid-sixties and Nick and Sofie, a Dutch couple about my age. The first thing to do was go to an office in the harbor and pay the 95.000 IDR entrance to the Komodo National Park (valid for 3 days) and then get on a small boat that would take us to the dive boat. We had a full Indonesian crew that day: the guides and the 4 people that worked on the boat. The boat was very similar to the one ... read more
