I took a train from Edinburgh to London. It wasn't cheap (the cheapest option was flying), but it was the most comfortable and it also gave me 4 hours to read a book that I had picked up in a hostel in Cape Town which I really enjoyed ("The Passage"). I had my tickets printed out at the house I was staying in and after arriving at the station I just got on the train. Out of all the boxes I checked when I bought the ticket online, I guess I didn't read the "fine print" where it said that I had to present the printed papers in an office to get the actual tickets before boarding the train. I found out about all this when the train was well underway and the ticket inspector asked ... read more

A short flight from Dublin early in the morning and I was in Scotland. No paperwork done or documents checked in either country. I went to Edinburgh mainly to visit Scottish relatives from my father’s side. My grandmother has 6 Scottish cousins and both families in Chile and Scotland are well connected. The common surname is Walbaum. Here's a Walbaum family tree that an American Walbaum descendant has been working on for some time. I stayed with Charlie & Anne Laing (I had also stayed with them the last time I was there in 2006 for X-Mas during a 6 week trip to Europe). They have a dog called “Mosca” ("Fly" in Spanish) that apparently remembered me. Charlie's the youngest of my grandmother's cousins. Right after having arrived in the airport I took a bus to ... read more

After a 24 hour trip with a stop in Abu Dhabi and after having watched a few movies and documentaries I arrived In Dublin. I had booked a hostel for a few days; the "Times Hostel" in Camden Place. It was OK, but a lot more expensive as to what I had gotten used to in South Africa the previous months. Customs went by fast and when I got out of the airport I managed to find a bus that would take me close to the hostel. I didn't really have much idea of where to get off, but fortunately a couple of Kiwi tourists were sitting next to me and had a map. I had to walk about 10 minutes to the hostel after getting off the bus, so my calculations weren't that bad. After ... read more

Cape Town lived up to the expectations. Everyone kept telling me that I had to go there, that staying there for one week isn't enough and that I would love it. All true. Cape Town's a beautiful, modern and efficient city. And full of things to do. By a recommendation from a tour guide I met in Cape Agulhas, I went to stay in a hostel that's in an area in Cape Town called Green Point. The hostel is the "B.I.G.". It's a boutique hostel and you definitely get your money's worth if you stay there. So far, out of all the backpacker places I've stayed in, in the world, this has got to be my favorite. I heard similar comments from other people staying there and the fact that they have a 98% approval on ... read more

After a great stay in Oudtshoorn I took the route 62 again and drove to Cape Aguhlas. All I knew about this place was that it's the Southernmost tip in Africa. It was on the way, so I thought "why not check it out"? The drive itself was amazing. After leaving Oudtshoorn, the road goes between and over mountains that are some of the most beautiful I've seen so far. So that was already a great start. That and the fact I really enjoy driving, especially if I have good music to drive with. Along route 62 I came across a peculiar place called "Ronnies Sex Shop". It's in the middle of nowhere and No, it's not an actual sex shop. The story behind this place is that a man named Ronnie put up a shop ... read more

I could see why everyone kept saying "you have to do the Garden Route". It's simply stunning. After my bungy jump experience in Bloukrans Bridge I kept driving west. It was a short drive to my next stop and the first one of the Garden Route: Nature's Valley. The place I stayed in was one of the best I've stayed in so far in SA; "Wild Spirit". It's a big property with a very rustic feel to it. There are a free walks that can be done within the property, they have good food and the owners are excellent hosts; Jenny & Earl, who've had the place since the 70's. At the time there was also a Spanish couple, Alex and María who were very friendly people. As a side note: the owner of the "Wild ... read more

Continuing my trip along the South African coast I arrived in the Sunshine Coastand did a few stops there. The first one was Port Elizabeth (PE). I drove there from Chintsa, passing East London on the way and taking about 4 hours. In PE I stayed in "Island Vibe Backpackers". There are a few backpackers in SA that belong to the same owners. The one in PE is a big, modern house and very comfortable. The problem with traveling during winter is that days have been too short. While in PE, I only had a couple of hours to drive along the beachfront and have a glimpse of the city center. Just like Durban, the beachfront was beautiful, with a good walkway, excellent beaches, piers, etc. The city center itself looked interesting enough to walk it ... read more

From Shelly Beach I drove to Port Saint Johns, entering "The Wild Coast". I had heard mixed comments about the Wild Coast. Ones saying that it was an amazing place and others that it wasn't really worth going to and that I had to drive through the Transkei, with bad roads full of potholes and loose cattle roaming free everywhere and that I'd get stuck in traffic jams driving through the townships. And that it wasn't very safe. I decided to check it out for myself. And I agree with the first comment I wrote. The Wild Coast is definitely worth going to and staying there for at least a few days. That is if you're into beautiful rugged landscapes, walking through Xhosa villages, surfing, fishing, laying on the beach, disconnecting f... read more

Next stop after Umkomaas was Shelly Beach. To do some more diving. This time, in Protea Banks. Protea Banks is one of the most famous spots in South Africa to do shark diving, just like Aliwal Shoal. Before arriving there, I asked a few contacts and I was recommended "Aquaplanet Dive Center". The dive center is owned and run by Kym Pollard. And so far, it's been the best dive center I've been diving with in SA (out of a total of 5 dive centers in the past month). For the whole week I stayed in a place that they recommended to me at Aqua Planet: "Cathy's Cove". This place is in a town called Margate, which is just 5km from Shelly Beach. After the three days in Durban I was very excited to go diving in Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks. I had been expecting this for some time now. Both places are among the best dive spots in SA and have a worldwide reputation as well. This area is home to a number of different shark species. The most common ones are the Oceanic Blacktip sharks and the Sand Tiger sharks(raggies), which can be encountered year round. Depending on the time of year, Hammerhead sharks and Tiger sharks can be seen as well. And for the “lucky” divers, they’ll spot a Great White or Zambezi sharks (Bull sharks) from time to time.
