We arrived at Franz Josef Township that afternoon. The sun was out and the weather was reasonably warm. We checked into the Rainforest Resort motor park, which had its own bar with meal deals. We parked Red Dwarf in amongst the foliage and went to suss the place out. We had read a leaflet in Greymouth about Franz Josef Glacier, and had decided to do a glacier valley walk the following day with a guide. We went to reception to book it, and the girl advised us to pay a little extra and go on a half day glacier walk on the next glacier, Fox. The glacier valley walk we could do ourselves. So our plan was to walk the Franz Josef valley the following day, and then head down to Fox the day after, on ... read more

The drive to Westport was equally spectacular in terms of scenery, but as it gets dark about 5:30pm in New Zealand in the winter, we didn't see much of it. We arrived at our campsite that evening pretty tired after all our walking at Abel Tasman that day. As soon as we checked in we headed into the town to get some burgers for dinner. After dinner, we watched a DVD in Red Dwarf and headed to bed. It was another early start the next day to get to Greymouth. The next morning at breakfast, a guy staying at the park told us that there had been lots of accidents around the country due to black ice ont he roads. He warned us to be careful, especially since we were driving south. We cautiously set off ... read more

We droveoff the ferry at Picton after a lovely crossing. The ferry sailed through Cook Strait which made for great views as the sun was going down. It was dark by the time we got to Picton so we found our holiday park and checked in before cooking dinner and chilling out before bed. We were planning on driving to Nelson the following day. Next morning, we set off on our drive to nelson which is a great little town. Our campsite was 4km outside Nelson in the valley, and only cost us $6 each for the night. Cheap as! It was still bright when we arrived it was still bright so we went for a walk in the valley and hiked up one of the hills. It was pretty cold but the views were nice. ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Wellington » Lower Hutt July 26th 2012

We were on our way to Wellington to visit our friend, Peter, who has been living in NZ for about 10 months and works at the Earthquake Commission. We were really looking forward to catching up with him. We stopped in a town on the way called Bulls, before reaching Wellington about 4pm. We arrived in the motorpark Peter recommended to us. We were getting set up and settled in when we heard "Hey strangers", and there was Peter with a big bag of goodies! We sat in Red Dwarf drinking goon (wine in a box), catching up and eating the goodies Peter brought (rice crackers and Kiwi dip). We felt hungry after a while so we went to a great pizza place called Red Dog, and got 2 huge pizzas. After the pizzas we got ... read more

We arrived in Ohakune that evening- it was a friday- just in time for the beginning of Mardi Gras to mark the beginning of ski season. Since we couldn't get tickets to the Ireland-All Blacks game in Hamilton, we decided to go skiing instead (turns out it was the better choice!). That evening we just relaxed at the campsite and saved our energy for the following day. We headed up to Mount Ruapehu the next morning for a half day of skiing. Mount Ruapehu is a huge volcano. We parked the car and headed in to get our gear. We got ski boots, poles and skis. We headed out to the slopes- only the beginner slope was open because of the stong winds. Dave had been skiing before, but I hadn't, so it took me a ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Rotorua July 15th 2012

You know you're in Rotoru because the smell of rotten eggs hits you like a brick wall. It's such a bad smell it makes your stomach sick. The smell is from the sulphur- Rotorua is on a Caldera- a super-volcano. But you put up with the smell because with a caldera comes great and amazing things to see- such as geysers, mud pools and hot springs. We parked Red Dwarf in a holiday park near the main town and got some dinner. We were pretty tired after our busy day, so we headed to bed early enough. The next day, the weather was still miserable- so we just walked around Lake Rotorua and walked into the town and had coffee. It was a nice relaxing day. When we got back to the holiday park, we booked ... read more

So we made our way North from Auckland in Red Dwarf. It was dark by the time we arrived in Pahia so we just cooked some dinner and had a few games of cards. There was a big family from Australia staying at the campsite who had been to a wedding, so the kitchen area was pretty busy and noisy! They were a nice bunch though, and even offered us some mince they had cooked (think they looked at our beans on toast and fell sorry for us!). We set up the car- which is a spacewagon with the back seats removed. Instead is a big chest with storage for dishes, food and bags and a fridge. The matress just went on top of the chest to make the bed. Red Dwarf also had a DVD ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland » Parnell July 6th 2012

We landed in Auckland 13 hours later, at 4:30am local time. Because we had travelled over the international date line, we lost a day. In the airport , we grabbed a coffee and took a look at a map of Auckland so we could find our hostel. Before that, we had to go through immigration where they ask you questions about why you're in the country. When someone in uniform starts asking you questions, its hard not to look guilty, but we got through with little hassle. After that, we had to go through customs and biosecurity where they had sniffer dogs going around. We had to declare our hiking boots because we had visited forests in South America. They checked our boot soles and all was ok! After our coffee we got into a shuttle ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago June 21st 2012

We got a transfer across the Bolivia/Chile border which was basically a bloke called Oscar driving a pickup truck. THe drive took about half an hour, and, like the salt flats, the landscape looked like you were on another planet. Straight away we noticed Chile was bit more civilised than Bolivia- they had roads- tarmac roads! We arrived in San Pedro de Atacama about 10am (we got up at 5am to go to the hot springs so it felt like lunchtime at this stage). We had to get our passports stamped at the migration office, so we joined the queue which took forever. Once we got our stamps, Oscar dropped us to the TurBus office, as we were planning on getting an overnight bus (yes, another one) to La Serena, a small town that is known ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Uyuni June 21st 2012

After the Lares trek, we had 10 days left before we had to catch our flight from Santiago in Chile to Auckland, New Zealand. We had thought about bussing it down to Santiago from Cusco and stopping off in places along the way, but so many travellers we met kept saying how great the Bolivian Salt Flats were. So we decided to go back to Bolivia. Easier said than done! The 3 day tour of the salt flats would leave us in San Pedro de Atacama, just over the Bolivia/Chile border, and from there we could make our way down to Santiago. To get to the salt flats, tours started from a little town called Uyuni. So we had to bus it back to La Paz, and then get to Uyuni from there. It was going ... read more
