Europe » Iceland » Southwest » Reykjavík November 16th 2014

We set off early on the first morning to catch or flight to Reykjavik. We had no trouble getting through security and had time to sit down and grab some breakfast before getting on the plane. We arrived in Reykjavik a bit behind schedule, because of the bad weather in Dublin, our plane left late. We settled into our hotel called Reykjavik Lights and then headed to the pizzeria downstairs for some dinner. The pizzas were really tasty, and we tried the local beer, Viking, or as the locals call it, "Wicking". A bus was waiting for us outside the hotel to take us to the Blue Lagoon and the Northern Lights. On the way to the Blue Lagoon we learned a thing or two about Iceland. The population is only 330,000, with about 200,000 living ... read more

The sat nav had directed us to Mount Vernon, the housing estate, which worried us because we could have been anywhere in VA at this point. Luckily, when we reprogrammed the sat nav to take us to "Mount Vernon- George Washington's House" we realised it was just around the corner. We parked the car and headed into the visitor centre for some food. After tucking into a pizza, we made our way into the gardens of Mount Vernon. The estate is huge, with gardens either side of the mansion, as well as a big bowling green out front. George Washington's tomb is also on the estate. We made our way up to the mansion, passed one of the gardens and also a privy. We arrived at the mansion grounds where a staff member offered us a ... read more

North America » United States » Virginia » Virginia Beach October 3rd 2014

We arrived at Virginia Beach an hour later. Our hotel, the Quality Inn, was right on the beach and had its own pool. We were staving so firstly we had lunch in the grill. Afterwards we walked about 100 metres and then lay down on the beach and fell asleep. We were so knackered after our busy few days. After some time we went back to the hotel to get ready and we headed out to a nice Italian restaurant up the road. We had an early night as we were planning on going to Busch Gardens the following day. We got up early and had breakfast in the hotel. It was minging so we vowed to go out for breakfast the following morning. We drove to back to Williamsburg to Busch Gardens, parked the car ... read more

North America » United States » Virginia » Williamsburg September 30th 2014

We left Charlottesville in good spirits although we were sorry to leave it. The weather was a bit wet so we were glad to be driving. We stopped off at Richmond on the way, which is the capital of VA. We saw the Capitol building and a statue of George Washington. Near where we parked was the site of a sit-in against segregation in the 50s. At Williamsburg we got to the hotel which was way fancy. We checked into our room and after a while we got a cab down the road to an Italian restaurant. We only had one bite of food and I felt sick, so we boxed up our dinner and took it back to the hotel. We watched the end of Mean Girls and then got an early night. We were ... read more

We drove to Charlottesville through the Shenadoah National Park. The route we took is called the Skyline Drive and it takes you right down the ridges of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We heard the views were spectacular, and even though it was lashing rain we decided to still go for it. We arrived at the park gates and the ranger told us it was pretty foggy but we said we'd go anyway. We couldn't see a thing on the drive but we imagined the views would be nice! We saw a few deer and Eagles on the drive. We arrived at Charlottesville around 7pm. Our motel was right beside the practice pitches for the University of Virginia. The college brass band were practicing, and they played Beyonces 'put a ring on it'. It was brilliant! We ... read more

We left Dublin on a Saturday morning, after an hour and half of queuing for check in, security, preclearance, more security, and more preclearance, we had about 20 minutes to run to the bathroom and grab a quick bite before boarding. We had a 7 hour flight to Boston which was okay, we had movies and tv to keep us busy. At Boston, our flight was delayed about 10 minutes so we grabbed a quick pint of Sam Adams in the bar. At Reagan airport, we met Emily who took us back to her place on the metro. Antony was cooking dinner when we got back, so we had a beer and a catchup before sitting down to dinner. At this stage we were pretty tired, so in an effort to stay awake a bit longer ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Hong Kong Island August 25th 2012

We landed in Hong Kong tired after our journey from Thailand. It was a busy airport. We had arranged to meet my cousin Fiona there; it was nice to think we would have someone there to meet us! We got the train with Fiona into the city and then got a taxi to Hollywood Road where she lived. The apartment was beside the Man Mo Temple. We were so happy to be staying in someones home rather than a hostel, it was so much more comfortable! Fionas apartment was compact but we managed fine. It was great to have lie ins and home cooked meals :) Although, her bathroom door was in the living room and was frosted glass... Fiona kindly taped a shower curtain to the door so you couldn't see people peeing in there ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Pha-Ngan August 17th 2012

The ferry from Koh Phi Phi to the mainland was a bit shaky. We sat in the "Air Conditioned" area downstairs, which was still pretty warm! Our bags were piled high on the deck. The journey seemed to last forever, so we played a fair few games of cards. We arrived on the mainland in a town called Krabi and were approached by what seemed a thousand bus drivers and taxi drivers telling us they could take us to whereever we needed to go; but we had already booked a bus to take us across the penninsula where we would get another ferry to Koh Phangan. The bus was warm and sticky with flowery curtains that looked at least 50 years old. The "air conditioning" units were holes in the ceiling. The bus was packed out; ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Phi Phi Don August 17th 2012

We arrived in Bangkok airport and quickly boarded our plane to Phuket. We were planning on staying in Phuket just for one night, and catching the ferry from there to Koh Phi Phi, which we heard was one of the nicest of the islands. The flight wasn't too long, just an hour or so, and when we arrived in Phuket airport it was after 10pm. The public bus we were planning on taking to our hostel was finished up at this stage, so we gingerly stepped outside the airport only to be hounded by taxi drivers. It was pretty stressful, and after a day of travelling we were pretty tired and grumpy. One particular taxi driver was pestering us so much, we snuck back into the airport through a different door just to get away from ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai August 17th 2012

We arrived at Dozy House and were greeted by Gina, the lovely receptionist. She gave us loads of information on what activities to do around Chian Mai, and she had a great sense of humour, so we could have a bit of craic with her. She showed us to our room, which was lovely and spacious, with air conditioning (a must-have in Thailand!). We were starving, as we hadn't eaten a proper meal since 8pm the previous night. It was now 4pm. She recommended a noodle bar around the corner, so we walked down to check it out. Dozy House is situated in the old town of Chiang Mai, which is charming, quiet and chilled out.We had some noode soup in the noodle bar and then headed straight back to Dozy House to shower and freshen ... read more
