Europe » United Kingdom » England » Somerset » Bath June 29th 2009

Visited the town of Bath, known since Roman times for the hot springs. The Roman Baths were closed, but walked around the whole town for several hours. Bath is truly one of Europe's highlights as a travel destination. The weather has been perfect. Well Hot. That's quite unusual for this part of England at this time of year. Luckily N..'s cousin's car has A/C. The A/C in the other car was not working and we wilted in the Wiltshire heat on our trip to Stonehenge and Avebury.... read more

Drove by Oxford enroute to visit another of N..'s cousins, who'd invited us for high tea. They live in a beautifully wooded estate in Chinnor. While we walked in the woods, W.. climbed trees, shinied up ropes and ran along with a model airplane before becoming a strawman. The Strawman had to be dethatched before he got back into the car. N..'s cousins are founders of some web sites focussed on encouraging the world to be green. For example, by encouraging business and conference travel via SecondLife and encouraging and distributing video conferencing technology. They are committed to their cause, but it seems it's an uphill struggle to get others to commit. So Kermit was right when he sang “it's hard to be Green ...”... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Wiltshire » Avebury June 27th 2009

N..'s nephew, joined us for the day, away from his work in London. Visited Avebury, which has a large stone circle around the village. The stones are not as big as those at Stonehenge, but impressive because of the size of the stone circle. Then visited Stonehenge, as you can tell from the pictures. Surprisingly it was not as touristed as we expected. It was busy for a weekend afternoon, but not as bad as we'd expected. It was a hot day and we were quite exhausted from the heat. Came home to a wonderful dinner that N..'s cousin had cooked.... read more

Visited Liverpool, which has grown beyond some singing insects and named “The European Capital of Culture” in 2008. N..'s cousin's daughter sang at a Church choir while we window shopped at the Liverpool One outdoor mall and did sight seeing at the dock yards. Saw some Morris dancers outside a pub - a rare sight these days.... read more

Arrived in Manchester, UK on June 21, 2009. We took a direct red-eye flight from Vancouver to Manchester. W.. commented the dinner served on the flight was "the best food I've ever eaten". Two hours later he complained of a headache and said "this is the worst day in W.. history." Soon after, all that food he'd eaten came back up. It was a little messy, but a good thing we had a complete change of clothes in the carry-on baggage. N..'s aunt and uncle met us at the Manchester airport and drove us to N..'s cousin's house in Chester (Upton). We were all a tad bit jet-lagged. We went to a Greek restaurant to celebrate their daughter's 15th birthday.... read more

Middle East » United Arab Emirates » Fujairah December 26th 2008

Fujairah is on the Indian Ocean, just north of the Omani mainland and south of the Musandam penninsula. Sallahuddin won a major battle against the crusader forces just north of Fujairah and west of the Musandam penninsula. This was beach time. But, we seemed to be the only ones on the beach. There was an Emirati party during the weekend, but we had the place pretty much to ourselves the rest of the time. W.. enjoyed digging big holes in the sand and burying himself in those holes. He showed himself to be a pretty good climber by repeatedly scaling a hill that over looked the hotel. He also enjoyed swimming in the sea and the pool, even though the water was colder than we expected. Not as cold as Vancouver seas in the summer, but ... read more

Middle East » United Arab Emirates » Dubai December 19th 2008

Originally, we were wanted to go on a Tanzanian safari during the Christmas break. But, since the flights from North America were so expensive, we figured we'll get to Dubai and catch a cheaper flight from Dubai to Tanzania. Then we figured, why not make Dubai a destination in itself? So, that's what brought us to Dubai. We spent the first week around Dubai and Sharjah, 3 days in Doha, Qatar, and the remainder of the time on the beach in Fujairah, by the Indian Ocean. In Dubai, it rained for two days. The rain came down hard and then the sun came out. So, it was pleasant. Not like the London or Vancouver style grey skies and slow drissle all day long. What's there to do in Dubai? Plenty. But, most of it is centred ... read more
