I've gotten behind again on this blog, but as luck (?)would have it I've been given lots of time. We are sitting on a train somewhere between olyantatombo and Machu Picchu, not going anywhere. Apparently there's been a land slide up ahead and no one's going anywhere and there's no internet service. In the meantime I can catch up and write about yesterday. We started the day on the bus at 8. I was out much earlier to enjoy the beautiful setting of Villa olyantatombo. The flowers, the birds, and being surrounded by the Andes is so peaceful. And besides there's only internet outside the room. Our first stop was along the road. Raul had us all get out to talk about the flowers and fruit trees. There were avacado and pear trees. We stopped into ... read more

We were up at 5, suitcases out the door by 5:30, and on the bus to the airport by 6:45 to be on time for the plane to Cuzco that that was then cancelled. Not to fear Raul got us on the next flight and we were in Cuzco before noon. It's all so organized it's impressive. Luggage got loaded on a bus that had our bag lunches and we were on our way to Pisac, a amazing Inca site. Despite drinking Coco tea and lots of water, I felt the altitude as soon as we started walking. Everyone on the trip seemed to experience it differently. I had some shortness of breath and got tired really quickly. But despite that and the rainy weather we got pretty far exploring these ruins, slot of uphill climbing ... read more

Writing this as I pack up to leave Lima. We're flying to Cuzco in the morning. We've been here for 4 days and I've really liked the city. Our OAT tour group under the very able leadership of Raul has started. Only 5 additional people, 4 of them women, and all seem very easy going and friendly. We did go on the big tour bus yesterday to get to Central Lima but we've also traveled on public buses and trams, which has been fun. Buses in Lima always look crowded as are the roads. Too many people for the space in this city. So what did we see and do in Lima these past 2 days? A good bit of sightseeing: Took public bus to Huaca P to see pre Inca ruins. Amazing that this mud ... read more

I've been in Lima for 2 days and this is the first chance I've had to start writing about it. How did that happen? Maybe having 8 traveling companions has something to do with it? And lots of plans for these 2 pretour days has kept me too busy during the day and too tired at night? All good reasons! This trip is off to a great start. I'm on this adventure with my usual traveling buddies, Rochelle,Roberta, Cheryl, Carol, and Naomi, and we've added 3 lovely ladies, Wendy, Sandy, and Terry. For these 2 days we've gotten to explore Miraflores and Barranca on our own via paper street map and free walking tours. And taken a half day tour from Viator to go to the south of Lima to Pucasana. What I've seen of Lima ... read more

As we head back home, 17+ flying hours, I thought for the sake of my memory, I'd put together what we did the last 2 days. The pace definitely slowed down after the Ganges experience. That same day we spent the afternoon in Sarnath, place where Buddha gave his first sermon 2500 years ago and where there is a stupa on that spot, and excavated ruins from Buddhist temples. This was the center of Buddhist learning under the emperor Ashoke. We went into a Buddhist temple that is currently in use. Kapil talked about the history of Buddhism and some of the beliefs. We also drove around the Varanasi Banaras University, the largest residential university in India. Wherever we drove we saw children flying kites, part of the festival day. There are competitions where they try ... read more

We arrived in Varanasi, taking a plane from Kajuraho, Spoiler: this will be a long post. There's so much to say about our experience on the Ganges. We arrived in Varanasi, a large bustling city which sees millions of Hindu pilgrims every year who come to go to the Ganges. and we did the same...had just a few minutes at the hotel before heading out to take a boat from a ghat on the Ganges. The plan was to watch the Thanksgiving ceremony that takes place each evening and to see the cremation ghat. The streets by the water are so crowded that buses can't go there at night. We had taxis taking us to a meeting point. A short ride took a long time as there was lots of traffic going through the narrow streets. ... read more

Early start... Breakfast at 6 and on the way to the train station by 7:15. Taking the train to jhansi and then a bus for 5 hours to Kajuraho. Kapil tells us that people will offer to shine our shoes and fix our bags while waiting for the train and they did. Beggers, very disabled, one with elephantiasis, are regulars at this station. Guide said he's been seeing them for 12 years here and they make more than poor farmers do...Still sad to see. Train was decent...We had reserved seats. The trip was slow, even though this was a fast train.. Instead of 2 and a half, the trip took 4 hours. Biggest problem? The bathrooms..One look and I knew I'd be waiting until we got to our next destination! In total we traveled for about ... read more

This post will be a long one. Thanks for sticking with me, if you decide to. I'm riding on a train to our next destination and have lots of time. I've figured out how to use my tablet off line too. Breakfast in this luxiourious hotel, feels like I'm staying at a current day Taj...Then off to see the Taj Mahal. Beautiful morning, cool, fogs lifting quickly and the blue sky is showing. Kapil said we are very lucky. It's only the 2nd time in a month that the the weather was clear enough to see the Taj. Once we entered the area and saw this incredible tomb, Kapil told us the story of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and his beloved third wife mumtaz Mahal. . She died giving birth to their 14th child at ... read more

I didn't think today's road trip would be blog worthy....Just a long uneventful bus ride. But I was wrong. We left Jaipur after a buffet breakfast, of course, first stop was a beautiful Hindu temple, all white marble. Kapil is a Hindi and gave us an intro to the basics of the religion. We got lucky and were there during the morning service. A curtain came up on a gilded, lit up statute of Vishnu and his wife. There was music and fire...At the end water was sprinkled on the worshippers. Beautiful! Next stop, the small village of Abhaneri in northern Rajasthan. Here we saw an amazing step well, a water reservoir built in the 10th century. Next to it there was a Hindu temple. Met a group of Indian girls who are all nursing students, ... read more

The days are busy and the jet lag still a problem so I'm finally able to start catching up on the last two days of travels. We left Delhi early Sunday morning and traveled a total of 8 hours to Jaipur. It's really only 250 miles but the roads are crazy and often slow, lines at tolls were long, and we made a couple of stops along the way. Now that I'm out, I realize it's good to be out of Delhi. The country that you see along the road is very different and certainly unique...from the decorated trucks, to the cows and bulls on the road and along it, the sights kept the trip from being boring. People packed intp pick ups and old buses seem to find the Americans on the tour bus as ... read more
