Friday, May 18, 2012. A bit of rain around 2:00 a.m. pattered on the tent, but no wind. Birds sang late into the night all around us. Up and "at em" at 6:30 a.m. Tom and I had a good "stick to your bones" breakfast of my concoction of Potato crowns, Spam, Goose sausage (Tom supplied) Mozzarella and Colby cheese and Eggs all mixed together and wrapped in tin foil for warming on the grill. Some coffee and juice, loaded the bikes and headed back out to U.S. Highway 85 for the trip north to the CCC camp just south of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park's north unit...a left turn just before you cross the bridge. We unloaded the bikes, registered with our names and destination, and lifted the gate at mile post 97 of the ... read more

Yes, this is the trail

Thursday, May 17, 2012....What a great day for a ride. Got out of work early and finished packing. Tom arrived at my house, we loaded up the bikes, one last check of my checklist, and we hit the road. First stop, Belfield, ND to top off gas and get our "last meal" before heading north to Magpie Camp, west of U.S. Highway 85 near Grassy Butte. U.S. Highway 85 is full of truck traffic, we had to be careful making that left turn off the highway onto Magpie Road. Magpie Road just kept getting more scenic the further back into the Badlands we got, lots of cattle crossings and cattle greeted us along the way...on the roadway...."MOOve". Once we arrived at Magpie camp we found we were the lone occupant and had a nice choice of ... read more

Everything, except for food, water and ice and the bike, is packed into my Xterra ready for transport. Charged the camera, phone, tablet last nite. Tablet not working correctly and I am undecided as to if I should take it with or send back to the manufacturer today. Forecast is for rain Friday night and Saturday morning, but if I made all my plans based on the National Weather Service forecasts, I would only have done about one-quarter of the things I have done in weather that ultimately turned out to be beautiful, when otherwise forecast as miserable. I have sooo much food packed, clothing for all types of weather and lots of tools. Leap-frogging the vehicles will be a pain, but this will be a great adventure...so the trials and tribulations will be worth the ... read more

North America May 8th 2012

Well, well...Finally, at age 57, the time is nearly here to start this adventure. I have been half-heartedly planning the 110 mile ride across the western frontier of the North Dakota Badlands for nearly three years. My job as an emergency planner with the N.D. Department of Emergency Services and the past three consecutive years of flooding have delayed putting the plan into motion, but now is the time. North Dakota was virtually devoid of winter weather this year and both the 2011 Fall season and 2012 Spring have had temperatures above normal, and it has been relatively dry until this past week. I am aware of people that ride this trail every year and, although I thrived on marathon-type undertakings in my younger years, now this has turned into a Bucket-List type of endeavor for ... read more
