Well, this has been such a great week I have decided to enlist in the Marines. (That is if I can convince them to take me.) This morning we left early to travel to Camp Pendelton where we me Col. Looney, the commanding officer of the offensive in Faluja, Iraq. (Not sure about spelling :( A highlight of this trip was then witnessing a couple of hundred young recruits coming in from the Crucible, (a 54 hr. ordeal that tests these young men to their limits) and the last requirement before they receive their Marine emblem. It is too bad that every American can not have the opportunity to see this ceremony that was inspiring and moved almost all of us to tears. We then had the opportunity to go and observe young recruits learning how ... read more

Hi from Beautiful San Diego, It's 9:00 pm and we need to be on the bus at 5:15 am so this is going to be a quick note. It was another great day with the Marines. We spent the morning at the Marine Corp Air Station at Mirarmar to see first hand Marines at work after basic training. Most amazing was the opportunity to visit the flight line and see the fighter jets and helicopters up close. The jets were taking off for exercises not far from where we were standing. Again it was amazing to hear about all of the educational opportunites afforded to these young people and their extended families. The Marine program pushes its members to get as much education as possible. This afternoon we visited the Marine Corp museum at the training ... read more

Attention! Step Down :) You will be glad to hear that I survived Day two and am quickly becoming a huge fan of the US. Marines. The only part I don't like is the yelling. It wouldn't be quite as bad if I could understand what they are yelling - but it sounds like a foreign language to me. The drill sargeants bark out marching instructions and I just try to at least keep on the right foot. By the time I get home I should be an expert marcher. THis morning Brigadier General Angela Salina, one of three female generals in the Marines, talked to us about how the goal of the Marines is to take young men and women and make them into good citizens. I was especially impressed with the Core Value Based ... read more

Hello from Beautiful San Diego, This week I will be attending a workshop for high school educators at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. There are teachers, counselors and administrators from Las Vegas, So. Calif., Hawaii and Guam in attendance. All of the Marines we have met thus far have been incredibly nice, very fit people. (My room mate noted you could cut bread with their hip bones) I will be trying to give you some info on the Marines as I learn about the program myself. So far I have arrived at my Squad Bay (Living quarters at Half Moon Inn on the Bay), and got squared away (unpacked my bags) and enjoyed the talents from the galley (kitchen). Tomorrow we meet at 7 am to take a bus to the training depot. ... read more

Hola, We have returned from Guadalajara with some wonderful memories of a beautiful countryside and good people met along the way. The purpose of this trip was to move our daughter, Annie, down to Guadalajara to join her husband, Chad, who is enrolled in a medical internship there. Annie will be teaching 3rd grade in a private school there. Thus, the loaded pick-up truck and 30 hrs of driving (one way) in two days with three adults in the front seat was actually fun but exhausting :) Chad did take us around to see the sights the first day we were there, but the rest of the time we spent helping Annie get her new home cleaned and set up. I did attempt to post a blog at a very swanky Starbucks but had muy technical ... read more

Hola Familia y amigos, Time is short but I'll write more in a couple of days. We had a great adventure getting over the border but luckily it did not involve any jail time or taking any tarps & ropes off. :) Guadalajara is a city of 6 million people and it took us roughly 30 hours to drive from Las Vegas to here. Tomorrow Brent and I are leaving to drive back home. We plan to stop at Mazatlan and find some giant shrimp for Brent. Hope you are all well. Adios, Patty... read more

Hola mi familia & amigos, I was not sure if the last blog posted as the computer kept crashing and was very slow. I was glad to see that most of what I put on was published. We are winding down with three days left before we return home. Yesterday we went on a tour of the large Cathedral in Cuernavaca. It is the oldest Spanish structure still standing in the Western Hemisphere. We learned that one of the bishops here in the 1960s had all of the saints and images removed from the church because so many people were rubbing them for good luck and forgetting to pray to God. Now they fill their water bottles up from the baptismal font to take to a sick friend or to keep at home for an emergency. ... read more

Hola Amigos and Familia, I would love to say something profound to you in Spanish but I am in level one and so I am learning the basics. However, I am getting better and can carry on a simple conversation with no problema. The last couple of days we have boarded the magic bus and it has taken us to wonderful places. Saturday ten of us visited the Museum of Archeaology with the director of the school, Charlie. As we drove towards Mexico City he explained why, with all the rain, there are no major rivers. There are 8,000 volcanoes running in a line across a horizontal axis from the Pacific to the Gulf coast. These porous volcanic mountains act as giant sponges, soaking up and storing the water and releasing their water in springs. Wherever ... read more

Hola Amigos, Estoy en escuela. (I am in school) After four hours of Spanish class mi cabeza is exploding. Coming to Cuernavaca and attending the language classes at Cemanahuac has been a great experience. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn Spanish or about Hispanic culture. Since I posted my last blog we have visited Taxco, a small community in the moutains known for their silver mines and silver works. The hills of this town reminded me of San Francisco - very steep! At the top of the mountain is a plaza with an incredibly beautiful church. It was built by a young Spanish man by the name of Borda who came to Mexico to seek his fortune. He discovered a rich vein of silver and used some of the money to build ... read more
