This experience has meant so much to me. Truly, it is a trip that I will never forget. Any other overseas trip or vacation I plan will not match up. Here, I was able see firsthand the culture and daily lifestyle in Thailand. Rather than it being a touristy trip, we got to experience the day to day culture of an individual. This trip has taught me so much, and I will never forget the experiences I had here. I learned so many things through this cultural exchange. I learned more about the religion of Buddhism and how it is integrated into almost everything people do in Thailand. I learned about how similar we can be. That even though we are from all the way across the world, children are still raised the same and personalities ... read more

Here goes the longest day of my life, quite literally. After a full day in Chiang Mai, we are to hop on the plane at precisely 11:15pm on January 24th and fly back in time. After a 20 hour flight, we should arrive back in the states on January 25th at 10am. We will gain back a full 12 hours. My body will definitely take a toll. Especially since I have to grab another connecting flight home after we get into Dulles. The price I pay for living long distance. Even though I'm going to try to stay up for as long as I can on the flight so that I can sleep soundly on the 14 hour flight, I know my body is going to be out of whack. My stomach too. It took my ... read more

Bittersweet. That's how I feel after tonight. It was a good way to end but it's still sad to say goodbyes. Since we didn't get to fit an actual beach day into the trip, we made our own. We brought snacks and towels and just laid on the grass by the lake and chatted and read our books. It was a nice relaxing day before our crazy busy travel day tomorrow. The 9 of us have grown so close this trip that these friendships will most definitely carry over into the U.S. and our normal lives. I'm grateful for this experience not only because of the cultural exchange, but also for the solid friendships. I will forever have these girls be my "Thailand friends", and so many memories will travel with me. The evening was our ... read more

We are nearing the end of our trip, and it's starting to feel bitter sweet. I think I'm ready to go home, now that things are winding down, but I'm not ready for the drastic change in weather. It's gonna be a real shock going from 85 and sunny every day to 5 degrees with 20 inches of snow. A little bit of post-trip depression but I'll manage. These last couple days are pretty chill days too, so it'll help us wind down and get ready for our trip back. Boy am I looking forward to that flight (not). This morning we has a formal conference to attend. The topic was on domestic violence, and there were 3 other colleges in the area that were in attendance. Each college had to present about the topic.. in ... read more

Thai massages are unlike any other massage I've had. I'm used to the Swedish kind, where you get a nice relaxing massage that puts you to sleep. This one involved pressure points, stretching, and contortions. I did not know my body bent some of the ways that it did in this massage. Thai massages are known to be very rough and involve the deep pressure points in your body being driven on with an elbow. Doesn't sound very relaxing does it. I was lucky because my masseuse didn't drive her elbow down on me. She was a lot gentler than some of the other girls' experiences. She started on the legs, just hitting pressure points and twisting some ankles, then she worked to the arms and back and neck and head. I actually thought it felt ... read more

Wow. What a day today was. Something I'd never thought I'd actually experience. Elephant rides, ox cart riding, bamboo rafts. It was an amazing experience, but also had some mixed feelings. We arrived at Maetaman Elephant Camp and were immediately in awe of these beautifully ginormous creatures. They seem so gentle, yet can be so destructive. First we saw an elephant show. and Immediately I began to feel uncomfortable. Although it was so cool to see giant elephants kicking soccer balls and painting artwork, I couldn't help but think how voluntary this was for the elephants. I know that animals can be trained and used for work, like horses with bits and oxen with yokes, but just seeing the sharp tool that they would use to steer the elephant or get it to pay attention made ... read more

I'm a good cook. I hope none of you laughed after you read that. Today, my cooking skills were put to the test as I prepared a traditional Thai meal. Our buddies led a Thai cooking class and showed us how to make green and red curry chicken, papaya salad, pad thai, and TubTimGrob (funny name). It was so fun! Now I can take these recipes over to the U.S. and make them for all my friends. I'll make sure to add a bunch of Thai chilis so that they can feel the burn. Not really, I made the papaya salad today, and I put half a small chili in and people still thought it was spicy. Papaya salad includes garlic, coconut sugar, green beans, chilis, tomatoes, lemon juice, fish sauce, and shredded papayas and carrots, ... read more

Alternative medicine. Not always the most popular thing in America, but in Thailand it's a huge part of healing. It was our last day in the hospital, and we spent it on a special unit. We learned about Thai traditional medicine, mostly acupuncture and massages. We sat in with one of the acupuncturists to hear more about what he does. He was an interesting individual to say the least. If you can think of your friendly neighborhood hippie who is all about energies and good vibes, then you can pretty much describe this guy. A classic guru. He talked a lot about knowledge and imagination and then had us stick out our tongues so that he could read our auras. Apparently, my snake-like tongue is not a good sign. He said I have a little health ... read more

Ever see a man's head stapled together? Me neither, until today when I had to do a dressing change. His head had staples from ear to ear, and I cleaned and dressed it. Pretty cool stuff. Wanna know what's even cooler? Observing in the cath lab. We went down to the critical cardiac unit, where we saw an angiography in the catheterization lab. It was so cool! We watched the catheter go through the femoral artery, up into the aorta, and into the right coronary artery. A dye was injected into the artery, and we could see the arteries that were giving blood supply to the heart as it pumps. The doctor also pointed out two aneurysms in the artery, which is what the problem was. The patient was then shipped over to the OR to ... read more

Another productive day being a nurse. Today we walked into the trauma unit and were introduced to a "foreigner", a patient who is on vacation and got in an accident. Guess what accident? Motorbike collision. It was sad, poor guy has a swollen black eye, bruises and cuts everywhere, cracked ribs, and a pneumothorax. He may be in the hospital for a little while working out insurance details and healing while his friends are continuing with their vacation. I felt bad for him, and I also felt bad that I couldn't help translate for him. It was nice to have an english speaking friend to talk to though. Right after talking to our patient, we were whisked away to the Operating Room. I was super excited for this. We stood in on a spinal surgery. The ... read more
