We woke to another rainy day, but this was not too distressing since we were going to be in transit all day. Bob made us breakfast, then we packed up the car, made our farewells and rushed to make the Orcas Island to Anacortes ferry. Our timing had to be perfect in order to make all our connections and arrive at the Lake Crescent Lodge with a bit of daylight left to enjoy our accommodations and the setting. Unfortunately, due to long stops at some of the other San Juan Islands, we were late arriving in Anacortes. Our drive down Whidbey Island to the Keystone ferry landing for the 1:30 ferry, which would take us across to Port Townsend on the Olympic Peninsula, now became a race. Or maybe I should say an exercise in frustration, ... read more

After an uneventful drive from Seattle to Anacortes, we took the ferry to Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands. The skies got increasingly gloomy during the hour and a half ride. After docking in Orcas Village, we drove up the left “lobe” of the island to the larger town of East Sound. We were surprised by the variety of micro-environments we passed through during the less than 30 minute drive: rocky coast, rain forests, fishing villages, agricultural valleys, tree studded mountains. It’s as though Orcas Island is a complete world packed into a very small area. After lunch and grocery shopping in East Sound, we headed on to the vacation home of our friends Bob and Wendy Lucas from San Luis Obispo. The Lucases were in residence, but had taken a brief trip over to ... read more

...all 3 of you! ;-) So sorry I haven't been able to keep up with my blogging. I am just too busy to blog--which I guess is a good thing... Today I had to decide whether to spend 2 hours on Cannon Beach looking at the incredible tidepools and watching the sunset by Haystack Rock, or sit in our room blogging. You get the picture. Actually I have a few days worth written, but haven't always had good internet to upload text and photos. (Right now we're connected using Dave's Blackberry as a modem.) Maybe I'll get those entries on the blog site before we get home, but I'll probably talk to or see most of you in person before I catch up describing with our adventures in the blogosphere. Eventually I will finish it because ... read more

Today we left the wilderness behind for now, and with the help of our intrepid guide, Helen, we negotiated the Seattle area freeways and traffic and arrived at the Silver Cloud Inn on Lake Union. We were impressed this small hotel chain’s amenities (free shuttle, breakfast, laundry, internet, 24 hour coffee, etc.) and with our large room with its picture window view of Lake Union. Also impressive was the picture window-sized flat screen TV—just in time for all those weekend football games—not! Dave did enjoy getting to tune into ESPN to catch up on all the action once we returned from our sight seeing, however. (Hes been very good about keeping sports in its "proper place" on this trip, I must say...) We took advantage of the shuttle and started the afternoon at Pike Place Market ... read more

Today we took the perfect hike (suggested by one of the long-time employees at Alta Crystal), through a variety of terrains (forest, meadow, tundra, barren rock) in perfect weather, with perfect views of Mt. Rainier and the incredible Emmons glacier on the east side of the mountain. So much gorgeousness, it’s hard to describe! The only downsides were a very narrow section of the trail with a sheer drop-off and shale like rock surface—Dave’s height issues kicked in; heck, even I had a few “issues”! And then we passed through so many meadow areas of dried out, dead wildflowers, which would have been spectacular a couple of months earlier. Oh well—gives us an excuse to make a return visit during wildflower season! We finished off the day, relaxing by the pool and enjoying a cioppino dinner, ... read more

Word for the day is “fog”. We woke to find the little valley we were staying in socked in, where the day before there had been beautiful blue sky… Actually—knock on wood—we’ve had great weather up on this trip so far. We hoped for an early burn-off so we could get good views of Mt. St. Helens later in the morning. But at that point, we settled for a quick hike to the nearby mud flow still left from the Mt. St. Helens eruption in 1980, which the Eco-Park’s owner had suggested was a good intro to the Mt. St. Helens experience. It was quite impressive to see the destruction the mudflow had caused—acres of barren sandy mud with the burned out trees that were left standing in the distance. Apparently most of the devastation from ... read more

We checked out of the Timberline Lodge and drove to nearby Trillium Lake, which we’d heard was a photo opportunity waiting to happen. It did not disappoint, and we shot many a postcard-like photo of the lake with Mt. Hood rising above it in the distance. We took the 2 mile trail around it, and enjoyed the relatively solo trek through forests and meadows surrounding the little lake. Then we headed north, and as we came down in elevation, we entered the beautiful rolling hills of an agricultural area chock full of apple orchards and vineyards. Eventually we reached the Columbia River, which was impressive in size and scenery. Heading west, the first stop we made was at the historic Bonneville Fish Hatchery—which was a surprisingly interesting operation in a lovely setting. (Thanks for the tip, ... read more

Our fairly uncomfortable bed, in our nonetheless charming room, afforded us the opportunity to get up early enough to watch the sunrise over Crater Lake and take many photos. After breakfast we headed north through the middle of Oregon towards Mt. Hood. We were surprised to realize that central Oregon is considered high desert, and with its sagebrush and mesas and canyons, it reminded us of parts of New Mexico, especially when we drove through the Warm Springs Indian Reservation. After 5 hours on the road, we arrived at the Timberline Lodge. The huge crane blocking the front entrance and the scaffolding and construction netting covering a good portion of the back of the landmark building did not give us the impression we had been expecting. In fact nothing about the Lodge was really how we ... read more

I’m composing this first blog entry sitting on the window seat in our room at the Crater Lake Lodge, watching dusk arrive. The sky above the rim of the lake is tinged with pink and the normally vivid blue water has turned a steely gray. We just came up to our room from enjoying a glass of Tolosa Pinot and watching the changing light from the rocking chairs which line the patio behind the Lodge… Sounds so slow and peaceful, right? But of course that impression betrays the pace and the ups and downs (mostly ups) of the past three days. Let me summarize: Our 7 hour plus drive from SLO to the tiny town of McCloud at the base of Mt Shasta was relatively uneventful. We amused ourselves by trying to come up with the ... read more

It's been two weeks since we returned from our trip, long enough for discussions of highlights to take place and long-term memories to settle in (while mentally deleting most of the "special family moments"). Each of us has put together a "Top 10" list, which I will include in this entry for your entertainment... I've also included some of our favorite photos from the trip, although we have yet to comb through the hundreds the four of us took! But, in addition, I must touch on my reflections on traveling as a family for three weeks in slightly different but not completely foreign cultures. Our goals in going to these particular locations was to expose Chris and Drew to some of the highlights of western civilization, to help them put major historical events in context, to ... read more
