26-28 May 2008 We made an early start and after a few navigational difficulties finding the local supermarket and then the motorway we started our journey north in earnest. The Swiss border soon arrived, we went through the St Gotthard tunnel and then into Germany. We stayed the night at an excellent camper stop in the town of Speyer which is close to the A61 autobahn between Karlsruhe and Mannheim. There were some other British vans on the site, the first we had seen for over three weeks. Speyer looked a lovely town with a large cathedral and technology museum. We hope to have a look round it some time in the future when we have more time. Another early get away and after buying some cheap wine in the local Lidl we continued north west ... read more

25 May 2008 Before saying goodbye to Levanto we visited one of the bars and had probably our last coffee and chocolate croissant in Italy. Then it was a final visit to the beach (we didn’t swim this time) and a stroll back to the campsite. We have really enjoyed our time staying in this small unpretentious town situated on a wonderfully scenic stretch of coast. We drove along the coastal motorway to Genoa and then continued northward and stopped the night at Pavia so we could visit the Certosa di Pavia one of the most extravagant monasteries in Europe. We joined a tour led by one of the monks and saw the highly decorated church, the refectory and the grand cloister surrounded by monks’ houses. Tomorrow we must stop finding beautiful things of interest to ... read more

24 May 2008 We got up at 6.30 in order to catch the early train to Genoa, arriving just after 9.00. having bought a day ticket for local transport made our way to the nearest metro station and headed for the medieval quarter. At one time Genoa was ruled by four families, each controlling its own area with its own church. However the black and white cathedral of St Lorenzo was on neutral territory so all could worship there. Its striped façade is characteristic of buildings in the area and was a display of wealth. We explored the narrow streets and alleys visiting several more churches and the old docks and had a ride on one of the funiculars. After a quick lunch we caught the no 34 bus to one of Genoa’s suburbs, Staglieno, the ... read more

23 May 2008 We decided to have a non pressured day without any travelling and were pleased to enjoy settled weather for the first time in several days. The morning was spent making purchases in the excellent local shops of this pleasant town and then I updated the weblog while Wendy caught up with some washing. After lunch at the van washed down with the good local white wine, I walked along the coast to the Punta Mesco which gave outstanding views of the Cinque Terre from its elevated position. On my return we set off for the beach and had a swim in the Med, something we have been meaning to do for several weeks. The water was not particularly warm, but we really enjoyed it. ... read more

22 May 2008 A magnificent day’s walking along the Cinque Terre (Five Lands), probably one of the most well known and scenic coastal routes in Europe. It connects five villages which are difficult to get to by road but all have a rail link. For the entire length mountains which are terraced for growing vines, drop steeply into the sea and the path cuts across the slopes and drops down into each village. It’s12k long although it seemed more than that due to the amount of ascent and descent involved. Unfortunately, I lost my camera at the bar we had our lunchtime stop. However this was no great disaster as I had planned to replace it when we got home, the only pictures on it were those taken that morning and I had my phone with ... read more

20 May 2008 We made an early start in the pouring rain with full waterproof gear in order to beat the coach parties. But we snuck in with the first group at the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia and got a free English speaking guide. In order to reach the Cathedral Baptistery we had to detour round huge puddles. At the time that it was built total immersion was practiced and a huge font occupies most of the floor. A well earned coffee break at a popular café was followed by a visit to the Archiepiscopal Museum, most of which was closed for restoration. Sadly we were not able to see the mosaic of Christ dressed as a Roman Centurion as this section was closed for restoration, but we did see a rare carved ivory throne and ... read more

19 May 2008 We were sorry to leave Umbria. We have enjoyed its mountains, rolling hills and medieval towns (some of which we had to pass by). Hopefully we can visit at a more leisurely place some time in the future. Ravenna, our next stop, is a city of early Christian religious buildings decorated with exquisite mosaics, bikes and rain. Late in the afternoon we visited the Arian Bapistry and the much larger and more famous Basilica of St. Vitale. As we arrived shortly before closing, we were fortunate to have them almost to ourselves and with the help of the guide book were able to spend some peaceful time studying the fine detail. For the amateur photographer, mosaics do not photograph well because of the scale and low lighting. A most helpful lady in the ... read more

18 May 2008 We had no trouble finding the well signed overnight camper stop which had excellent facilities at today’s destination GUbbio. An Austrian couple told us told us that a local festival had been taking place but that it was over. We made our way into this beautiful walled medieval town and came across groups of young people wearing white trousers and either yellow, red or blue tops with red scarves and sashes. Roger found out from the guide book that the Corsa dei Seri, held on the feast day of Ubaldo, Gubbio’s patron saint had taken place three days before. We assumed we saw was the end of festivities. In between showers, we climbed up the side of the hill to visit the Piazza Grande and Palazzo Pretorio which dominates the square. Then up ... read more

17 May 2008 We made an early start and after a quick supermarket shop headed for Assisi arriving at midday. Having read about the crowds we decided to do the washing and have a leisurely lunch before walking down to Assisi through the countryside. Our first stop was the Duomo which had obviously been prepared for a wedding. We saw the font where St Francis and St Clare had been baptised. The Basilica of St Clare is relatively unadorned as the then pope feared too much decoration would distract the nuns from their devotions. We visited another old church slightly off the beaten track - a rewarding detour. Having left it as late as possible as late as possible we then went to the Basilica of St Francis a church built on two levels shortly after ... read more
