I forgot to say yesterday, but where the bloody hell are all of the red cars in Perth? As we were coming in we played a bit of car cricket and Nathan got 157!!! I promptly scored around one and then decided that we will have no more car cricket this trip! We are very lucky to stay with Anthony and Siska Pia's sis), not only do they have the good oil on the best spots to look at, but they are great peeps and we are having a ball! Friday night was spent at Little Creatures for great beer and dinner, finished off with a few more beers and a movie. We felt like royalty – clean clothes, more than one other human per 100m2, etc. Actually Freo seems pretty damn cool. Might put it ... read more

We spent most of Thursday checking out the sights of Kalgoorlie. The nice lass at the Info centre gave us the good oil on things to get up, including the best spot in town to get coffee. Whooooot! The AM saw us looking through the Hannan North Tourist Mine. It had heap of historical machinery and info, including a gold pouring display (awesome!) and some more recent trucks that the kids (yes, and me) could climb through. After a quick bite for lunch, a stop at the Super Pit lookout and a trip to Bunnings and Supercheap Auto for supplies and repairs, it was off for the Super Pit tour. What a great ride that was! I always used to think that bus tours were for old farts, but now I'm either converted or I'm an ... read more

I don't think I mentioned this yet but the bloody wind has been blowing hard for the last five days now. Mixed with some rain it is being quite the pest at camp and, as it is head on to us, it is making my fuel efficiency bloody horrible! We hear that although it is a bit ordinary in WA, that SA are getting their worst winds in 50 years! I know this because we have been listening to ABC local radio. A lot. We must be getting old... We had an early but relaxed start to the day as we had breakfast in the camp kitchen and then a shower. Each. Not together. Dad and Pia headed off to Norseman early and we wandered in around 10.30 am. A quick stop at the IGA, topup ... read more

A quick exit from Eucla saw us on the road around 8.30 am on Tuesday. We were aiming for a 400 km drive around halfway to Norseman but we decided to keep the loud pedal down to get to Perth by Saturday to watch AFL Grand Final so a 600 km drive saw us to the Fraser Range Sheep Station. This place is great and we will likely stay here on our way back through. Communal fire pit, awesome camp kitchen and people. And a working washing machine which was a blessing. Also, I can not stress enough how good a warm shower can be! Been six days without one so was pretty much due. Not much else to report as we spent most of the day driving. Some good scenery but that was about it. ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Eucla September 28th 2016

A quick start to the morning today and then a short drive of 190 km odd to Eucla. We had a few stops at lookouts over the cliffs into the Great Australian Bight, but other than that we headed straight on to arrive at a bit before 11 am, due to the timezone change. Unfortunately the caravan park has only one washing machine and it is out of order, therefore the dirty washing bag now holds over half of our clothes and takes up a fair bit of room in the trailer, but never fear, we have a plan in place. A quick 708 km to Norseman including one overnight stay in a rest area. Norseman is the last major town before we hit Perth. Arriving so early meant we sort of had a lot of ... read more

Been a few days since i fired up the old laptop (or is it 'notebook' – I'll ask one of the young 'uns). Well. Emus. Bugger me there are a stack of these buggers at Coffin Bay, in fact, you heard it here first, Emu capital of the world. Dad and Pia opted to have a 'lazy day' and stay in Coffin Bay township, which actually ended up being a big walk around the bay and some other messing about. This meant that my little family decided to explore the penninsula by way of the old Mav. We saw so many Emus that the kids didn't bother mentioning it by halfway through the day. And good timing for us too as their were heaps of little chicks running about. Very cute little things being looked after ... read more

The day started well with a good sleep for me and Suz for the first time this trip. Our kids said we were snoring in unison and kept them awake. Hahahahaha. Serves them right for the sleepless nights we have had worrying about them. We went for a walk through the scrub and learned about the Red Gums and local water life. I was always taught to look for a tree line if you needed water as there is normally a creek nearby but the info on this walk also said that it is more so the water table underneath that will keep the trees above flourishing through years of drought when there has been no flowing creek for years. Might need to have a whopping great big drill with me if I am to save ... read more

Day Five – Mt Remarkable Would you believe it – another morning of wind and rain! But this time it was pretty brief and after our sleep in (sort of) we packed up camp, had a basic breakfast and proceeded to leave the city of churches in our wake. A fairly short drive today (270 km) but we had a few stops for fuel and booze, plus a bit of a brake issue for Grandad and Pia that was spotted by a good Samaritan and fixed in a few minutes. It was good to see the Spencer Gulf in the distance as we drove along the highway as the water is one thing we miss now living in Canberra. Lake B-G in no way compares to a beach and the seas, unfortunately. Tonight we are camping ... read more

Day Three – Adelaide, SA After the third terrible night's sleep in a row, we were up for bacon, eggs, mushrooms, etc and then the drive to Adelaide. Dad didn't have much more then 100 km of fuel and we were no better. The map assured us that the next town would have fuel. Unfortunately the town consisted of a road sign – no more! The next town supposedly had fuel and a supermarket etc, etc, however once we arrived we found that fuel is only available on Tuesdays and Thursdays. WTF??? So Dad used his jerry to top up and we sucked in the guts and tried to feel as light as possible as the needle dipped below empty (no warning lights in a '91 Maverick). We ended up in some town called Murray something ... read more

Day Two – Pink Lakes – Near Underpool, NSW Rain. You bastard! Not too hard, but consistent from around 3 am until 10 am, from Hay until near Swan Hill. Packing up was in the rain, which is always a turd, but thank God for my new Akubra (ay, Aaron!!!), I was dry as a bone (hahaha). Getting out of the camp site was a little ordinary due to the slippery mud/clay. The poor old Maverick doesn't 'creep' as well with the one tonne trailer, but we made it in the end. After seeing our ordinary effort, the Rav 4 flew up – at a rate of knots! A pretty slow trip due to the rain but we eventually got to the banks of the Murray River for a quick stop and then on to the ... read more
