La-os vs Laos
Growing up in SE Asia in the 1950's and 60's we always pronounced it La-os, with two syllables. When the GI's arrived in the mid-60's they pronounced it Laos with one syllable. I think they are the ones who screwed up the pronunciation. You could ask the Lao how they pronounce it...probably Muang Lao.

Future plans
Not sure yet, maybe 3 months in Southern India and Sri Lanka, 6 months back in UK and Europe and then 3 months Northern Thailand, Myanmar and Laos again. Sounds pretty planned doesn't it?? All subject to change.

A moment's peace
Mert, thank you for sharing your touching story. Heights can be tricky things. I struggle with that myself and it is hard to explain. I hate it but it is what it is. I can parasail and do other things involving heights but if I'm some place where I'm not feeling secure or feel like I may fall off the edge my heart rate increases. It is irrational. I keep trying but there are days when I send Dave on and wait until he gets back. As you, I can enjoy the quiet moment's.

I visited Calitri three years ago by accident and decided that the feel of the village was right, so i bought a house in the storico and had it refurbished. I go back every three months and stay at my casa and spend lazy days visiting my new friends. Life slows down to a pace that can't be imagined in the "hurry up i want it now U.S..
