Our hotel, ‘Gecko Village’, is further out of town than we had realised. Fortunately they provide free bikes and have scooters and kayaks you can hire so it’s not much of a problem. The advantage of being slightly out of town is that it’s much quieter in the evenings and we have lovely views. Breakfast we enjoyed sitting on decking overlooking the river in their pretty garden. Hiring a scooter to share we decided to head over to Kep today (we found the scooter much easier to drive than the ebikes we had in Bagan). Kep is a small seaside town where the French used to go, before Sihanoukville became popular. It doesn’t really have a centre which is a bit odd but there are lots of old colonial buildings to see when you wonder around ... read more

There was a spectacular thunder storm last night, and judging by how wet everything was it rained a lot whilst we were asleep. This meant that the clothes we’d left to dry on the balcony were wetter than when we’d put them out! Oops. After breakfast we went looking for critters in the sea. Unfortunately the wind picked up and the sky clouded over making it very difficult to see anything. As the rain came down we gave up and swam back to our things before packing and checking out. The rest of the morning was spent reading in the bar, watching the ominous sky and dark sea with its white horses. Our tuk tuk to the bus stop was due to pick us up at 1pm. It was 30mins late. The hostel was great - ... read more

Christmas in paradise I woke up this morning to the sound of the sea and a gentle breeze. Getting up Stephen was sitting out on the balcony, finishing off my Christmas card. There was a clear, blue sky and a gentle breeze. Already scorching we enjoyed some mini bananas before heading to the bar. One of the first people up we finally managed to get the comfy chairs and enjoyed some muslei with fruit & yoghurt before grabbing a couple of kayaks and going for a paddle. Well sun-creamed up we set off towards the mangrove river. The first part of the paddle is across the bay. Paddling past an empty golden sandy beach with palm trees along the edge, past the local fishermen, on Christmas morning was pretty cool. At the end of the bay ... read more

What a wonderful day. Idyllic and we finally feel Christmassy. We enjoyed breakfast on the balcony of our bungalow before doing our laundry (less fun but necessary). Chores done we headed to the bar for some tea and a snack and then descended to the beautiful, sandy beach. We went for a swim in the warm waters and then built our sandcastles. Mine was a simple affair. Stephens was rather more elaborate and he ended up with a group of locals coming to watch. They even went to find shells for him to decorate it with! Whilst he finished his construction I got to read in the shade on the edge of the beach. Construction complete we ate some lunch before going for a short walk in the jungle. It was beautiful but hard work in ... read more

After a good sleep we woke to another overcast day. The breakfast by the pool was delicious (poached eggs, bacon & fresh fruit). We decided to walk into Otres Village to see if we could find some breads for breakfast for the next few days. Despite being overcast it was very hot. The paths from our hotel to the main village that used to exist have all been walled off by the big construction companies. This meant that it was a longer walk than expected as we had to go along the main road and round the long way. The construction around here seems excessive and poorly thought out. There are high rises going up everywhere. We saw new builds where the balconies from each building more or less touched each other. They’ve left no ... read more

We arrived in Phnom Phen late last night. Heading to the ‘visa on arrival’ desks we were disappointed to find a ridiculously long queue. We needn’t have been - the system is surprisingly quick and efficient. The customs form, visa form and arrivals form were all provided on the plane so everyone had filled out their info. Once at the front of the queue you give them your passport, visa form & passport photo and then go to a different queue to pay & pick up the visa. It’s only $30 for a tourist visa and there are ATMs where you queue so it’s easy to get cash. Having a foreign visa the ATMs would only allow us to withdraw US dollars and not the local reil. This meant we just converted some pounds to reil ... read more

Today we flew to Phnom Phen, Cambodia. Typically it was a beautiful sunny day in Mandalay as we left. After packing and breakfast we checked out and ordered our ‘grab’ taxi. Leaving at 9am the traffic was lighter than usual and our predicted hours journey took just 40mins. Unlike in the other countries we’ve travelled to the drivers here tend to be fairly good, the cars have seatbelts that work and you don’t have a constant fear of death. Mandalay airport is the largest international airport in Myanmar. It’s also incredibly quiet. Driving down the long drive was quite surreal as we were pretty much the only car on it. We had to queue for check in (despite having checked in online first) but we were the only counter that seemed to be open. Going through ... read more

Today has been a much more successful sightseeing day than yesterday. Whilst overcast it did not rain and we were able to get out and about without getting drenched. We initially got a ‘grab’ tuk tuk to Mandalay Hill, the furthest point from our hotel that we wished to see today. Here we passed between the 2 huge lions that guard the entrance to the top. Shoes off we started the 45 minute ascent. The walk is interesting as there are a number of small pagodas to see along the way. My personal favourite was a pink one. There’s also one with a large standing Buddha, pointing towards the city, foretelling that Mandalay would become the capital of Myanmar. Stephen enjoyed the ordination hall - a concrete building that’s quite literally falling down and is a ... read more

This morning we woke to the sound of torrential rain, slightly surprising given this is the drier season. Assuming it would pass we enjoyed breakfast on our (undercover) rooftop restaurant. It got heavier. The main things to do in Mandalay are seeing the Mandalay Palace, Pagodas nearby and the view from Mandalay Hill. There are a few half day trips to local temples and other sites, but again they’re almost all outdoors. Digging out our waterproofs from the bottom of our bags we braved the weather. At least up to a point - instead of walking to the palace we used ‘grab’ to book a taxi (it’s a bit like Uber and much cheaper than hey would otherwise be). The palace is in the centre of a walled square, surrounded by a moat, with just 4 ... read more

Having see the sunrise from land on Sunday and from the air Monday today (Tuesday) we saw it from the water. Our alarm clock has been set earlier and earlier this week and we are both looking forward to a lie in tomorrow. This morning we were up at 0400, checked out and ready to leave the hostel by 0430. The hostel had arranged a taxi for us and this arrived on time. The driver was kind enough to wait patiently whilst the staff checked our room and I had a quick cup of tea. As we left we were provided with a little packed breakfast of a jam sandwich, boiled egg and banana. Perfect. The boat jetty is just over 4km from the hostel so the drive didn’t take long. Our friendly driver soon got ... read more
