Very well done Hi Matt, Loved the photos of the orang utans and turtle. Great news about how much you've raised for the school books. I look forward to seeing loads of photos when you get back home.
Seasons Greetings Hi Matt, have just caught up on the last 6 blogs and loved it. Amazing pics, great stories. Do e-mail us your bank info and i'll send a school donation. Have a lovely christmas and new year. Fi xx
Christmas offsetting Matt - sorry I haven't been by for a while I have been moved to the East Midlands - joy!
Whilst I cannot get Beth to stop sending cards (actually what I proposed was a 'cull' of friends on account of having too many!) I have agreed that whatever we spend we match by giving. So count me in too, let me have your bank details...
book knowledge Hi Matt, I agree with Ross on saving the trees, and thus haven't carried folding money for several years. Would love to help the school, particularly now that I'm in the education business myself - please pass on bank details, would be great to give something back to the Philippines a year after I left.
Books vs Cards Nice plan Matt - my inner Scrooge has always despised Christmas cards as utterly meaningless and a waste of perfectly good trees (I'm sure you've got a view on that!). Now I feel invigorated to fight the enforced jollity of a hijacked pagan festival with my own brand of drunken grumpiness that I feel suits the occasion much better...
luvvelly bunch of coconuts... Well Matt,
I am very partial to coconut and always buy it over here and merrily chomp on it, so now I will be much more appreciative of all the benefits and useful by products..... you really are educating me on your little trips
Hope you are well
Ali x
Wow! great words on the coconut. you should put this in the wiki. Actually, the coconut water is a great cleanser of your system. If you notice, when you drink it, you pee more often. I forgot the right term for this. But its supposed to be good for your kidney.
Good stuff At a meeting this week someone asked 'who's Matt?' good grief! As I write the Business Design for Automatic Payments for Farm Woodland Scheme payments it's welcome relief to see that someone is enjoying life! I am moving to the east Midlands to take up a RFF type role working for Austin in Octboer, so at last the end of Glade, for me at least.
Great Blog.
Might be your snake Hi this might be your snake. A flying tree snake called
Chrysopelea pelias: Twin-barred Tree Snake
They do have a mild venom but are shy and wont attack unless cornered. The fangs are not hypodermic like they are in the rear of the mouth and grooved. There bite hurts a bit but usually doesnt cause any problems unless you turn out to be allergic. They are most unusual and this is one of 5 species that sort of fly by flattening their bodies and jumping off the tops of trees the parachute/glide in a twisting motion to a lower level. sometimes they cause area power failures landing across the hot and return lines of course that doesnt do the snake any good at all!. I have bee enjoying your blog as I am an American retired to the PI last year with my family. We live in Cebu and I have never seen one here. I think most wildlife is near extinct in Cebu as there is very little, possibly no old forest left here. Everywhere has been cultivated at sometime in the past 500 years it seems. Maybe Im wrong though. Thanks to your descriptions I hope to visit that area of Mindanao sometime. I have lots of family on the otherside in Zamboanga Del Sur. Keep blogging and keep doing the good work. I have a blog on 360 yahoo and am called BossFish if you get a chance to look.
Cockroaches yuk..... Hi Matt and the Older Youngs (Mind you, you don't look that old to me Ha ha) I am a great lover of the programme 'Fear Factor' and I am now convinced that there is a great deal of scope to use some of your experiences for different trials and stunts for future episodes.
As usual your blogs are welcomed as it is really interesting to see how others live and are happy with just basic facilities.
Mind you I definately aint visiting as I am still shuddering at the thought of a cockroach in that neighbours ear......Although just heard today on GMTV today that a little boy was complaining of rattling in his ear and it turned out that he had two spiders in his, one dead but the other still alive. So now you will have to shout as I am not taking the plugs out ha ha....
Take care Matt and keep eating as you are fading away.... unlike myself..
Love Ali x
Philippines Thank you for the proving the Foreign Office wrong...I'm glad you enjoyed your visit to the Philippines. Great blog!!!
I truly enjoy Matt's blog, as well.
Regards,
Just Catching Up Hi there Matt.
I haven't visited your blog since Christmas but, as today is a Public Holiday and the office is closed, I've spent some time catching up with your adventures. I'm not sure I would like the humidity out there but, as we've got a typical cold, blustery and wet Bank Holiday here, some of the heat and sun that you're obviously enjoying would be most welcome. Your first year has flown by hasn't it? By the time you return I will have retired from the FC (November 9th 2007 at or around mid-day!) but I'll be keeping my eye on your blog until your return. I hated the idea of a cockroach crawling into someone's ear - what a dreadful thought - it makes me shiver. However, your parents seemed to have enjoyed their time with you and actually experiencing your life must have been so much better than just reading about it.
Speaking of reading, I was about to throw out a few magazines I'd collected for later reading and came across an article containing a photograph of a young girl with what I thought was a face I recognised. Of course it turned out to be a story about your sister, Hannah and her fight with ovarian cancer. It also featured your Mum so, together with the recent photographs in your blog, I now feel I've met your whole family! I'm gald your sister and Mum have now recovered from their trauma and I note the positivity your sister has - just like her big brother.
I might have missed it in your earlier blogs but just how are you managing to complete them? Do you have a laptop with a 3G card? Do you have to travel for days before getting access to the internet?
Finally Matt, do you ever wonder about GLADE?
Regards
Lorna
Great article thanks for that wonderful article.... ive been there in Lanuza.... surfing is one of the best activity in that island....

Cockroach hell You've just convinved me not to make the trip to Lanuza- what would a cockroach look for in someone's ear?? I am starting to miss my two years of friendly house sharing with big fat Australian cockroaches only interested in stealing food from the pantry. At least, this must be by all means an exotic trip and unforgettable experience. Thanks for your entries on the blog and have a safe trip back to England. Best wishes, Cecile
