One of the things people who meet me travelling need to be well aware of is that the passing comment of “if you’re ever in the area get in touch and I’ll put you up”, will be taken very seriously!! As was the case when my travelling companion Sky, who lives in Dinkytown, Minnesota, (wow, that place has such a cool name), who I met in Santiago mentioned that she was set to be studying for one semester of her masters in Vienna!! Seeing as Vienna is only a short hop from London, I had soon booked up a flight to Austria’s capital on what turned out to be a balmy (in Austria anyway) bank holiday weekend at the end of May to enjoy some fine culture-vulturing as well as reliving the student days with ... read more

At Barclays we’ve got a regular Tuesday lunchtime 5 a-side slot, and quite a few of the players, (not myself obviously!), play to a very high standard. Thus whenin the springtime Barcalsy began to advertise their “Global 5 a-side football tournament” with a grand final to be played at the Emirates tadium we pricked up our ears! To get through to the grand final you had to come in the top 2 at one of the six regional finals. Twelve British based teams would make it through to the Emirates from the heats,to be joined by a further twelve team which had qualified from the participating countries around the world which included South Africa, Spain, Italy, Tanzania, Portugal and Ireland. But first we had to qualify, and a stroke of managerial genius from Terry Knappet ... read more

Bank holidays are so precious these days, and so when a promising weather forecast was combined with Mandi Mason’s offer of a reunion with the guys from Nottingham Uni based upon a long weekend of banter and boating on the Trent and Mersey canal, I jumped at the chance! We assembled at Mandi’s house in the mighty Stone, and after only the briefest of delays to ride the cool model railway thing that runs through her parent’s back garden we set off to Morrisons to get hold of 3 days worth of supplies for our boating extravaganza. Suitably prepared, we got the supplies down to the boat and four of the six of us got on with getting the boat underway, while Sarah Morris and I headed back to drop off the car and then ... read more

Europe » Germany » Berlin » Berlin April 22nd 2007

The Baso boys set off on their second foreign adventure of 2007 - this time to Berlin. After the successes of Valencia we felt like veterans of this international long weekend scene, and despite the flight being at an eye-wateringly early 6.30a.m., we all managed to get on the road, parked up at the airport and checked in with the minimum of fuss. The short flight soon passed and Captain Kangaroo bounced us to the gate. Unlike Valencia, we were able to depart the aircraft pretty sharpish and were soon marvelling at the wonderous efficiency of German public transport as we took the underground into town towards the “Heart of Gold” hostel which would be our home for the next 3 days. Our early arrival meant that we couldn’t check in, so we dumped our ... read more

The Easter Bank Holiday weekend saw us blessed with fine weather, and the even finer offer from Mr Matich for us to come up and visit him at his new digs up in Sheffield. The Sheffield convention for not putting any street names up hampered my car’s efforts to find Adam’s house, but the Sat Nav in the other motor proved infuriatingly accurate!! All assembled, we were bowled over by the quality of Adam’s pad. Decking seemed to stretch as far as the eye could see and it looked like it would be perfect for some prime sun-bathing and barbecueing!! Top work Mr Match!! After catching up on the sun-deck over a few tinnies, we headed out for a top curry. For us southerners, the prices seemed music to our ears, as many beers, starters, ... read more

Feeling the January blues after a fun old Christmas and New Year, the Baso boys were chomping at the bit when Shaun twirled his mighty mullet in the direction of a long weekend away in February to warmer, more cultural climes. Team G.E.L, (don’t ask!), was soon formed and cheap flights, and a cheap, but thanks to a first-hand recommendation from the legendary Sarah Lloyd, but brilliant hostel were all booked. All that was left was to find our passports and set the alarms - the 3a.m. start was not going to be pleasant!! Heavy snowfall on the day before we were supposed to leave looked a little ominous, but by the time we had to leave the weather was completely clear, and very much on the nippy side! Nug seemed to have got a little ... read more

South America » Ecuador » North » Quito July 17th 2006

The final destination of my trip was to be Quito, but before arriving I had a few days to “kill” in the Galapagos Islands! Never the tallest of orders! I had left my tour on the “Free Enterprise” feeling genuinely saddened. Usually when I’ve left a tour I’ve been buzzing and ready to move onto the next adventure, but on this occasion I was particularly melancholy. I think it was partly because my tour of the islands was so unique and incredible, as well as the realisation that the end of my time on the “Free Enterprise” really did mark the beginning of the end of my travels. It was hardly doom and gloom though, as I was still privileged enough to be out there on the Galapagos Islands and, as a treat, me and four ... read more

Leaving the Ecuadorian mainland bound for the Galapagos Islands, I was hugely excited. With my 8 day live aboard cruise around the islands already booked, all that was left for me was to enjoy what would surely be one of the most incredible experiences of my life, as well as being a great way to bring the curtain down on what had been a fantastic 9 months of travel through Latin America. Rather than go for a blow by blow account of each day, I’ve tried to summarize the essence of the trip and mentioned some of the highlights - hopefully letting the pictures do more of the talking. The cruise was a “live-aboard” trip. Therefore, we generally spent the days exploring the various islands on foot - arriving through a combination of dry-landing (when we ... read more

I think that leaving Arequipa marked a turning point in my travels. With only three or so weeks left, I felt that I wanted to start taking it easy and winding down my travels before my impending return. To that ended I decided to splurge on a stay in the Galapagos Islands before my flight home from Quito. However, this meant getting up to Ecuador pronto, and so in true road trip fashion "we've got a lot of driving to do!!” I broke up the journey north for one day at the tiny desert oasis of Huacahina, in order to both watch the England match against Ecuador, and partake in some dune-buggying. I was really looking forward to Huacachina, as sand dunes and desert are one of the landscapes that I had never viewed on my ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa June 25th 2006

The colonial city of Arequipa stands in pleasant valley about 1,000 km south-east of Lima. It is undisputedly the commercial centre of southern Peru, and its people are known to have a general resentment towards the capital, attempting at every opportunity to refute the belief that everything in Peru is run from Lima. Thus stories abound about how dirty, dangerous, uncultured e.t.c. the capital is, and the locals seemed delighted when I told them that I was planning only to view Lima’s bus station!! Chris, Matt and I spent our first day exploring Arequipa, and visited the “Museo Santuarios Andinos”, home to the so-called “Juanita” or “the ice maiden”. Juanita was discovered on the top of Mount Ampato near Arequipa in 1995 by Johan Reinhard. She is believed to have been aged between 12 and 14 ... read more
