This is my blog of the 20 administrative districts (arrondissements) of central Paris. In 2009, I was inspired by the town hall of the 3rd arrondissement which has a very pretty park just nearby, and an unexpectedly lively street, rue de Bretagne, with a host of shops, bars restaurants and a covered market. There's another 19 like this to explore thought I. And so this project began: 40 weeks of blogging, 2 for each arrondissement starting from the town hall and fanning out in exploration. BREAKING NEWS: I have decided to return in 2017 and 2018 and update these 8 year old blogs with new photos and write-ups of places to visit, including new restaurants.

Introduction to My 2017/18 Project It was quite difficult to know how to approach a major update of the 40 entries I made to this Travel Blog in 2009/10. In the end I decided to leave the text, photos and maps pretty much the same for the first entry for each arrondissement, except to replace poor quality photos with new ones, correct spelling mistakes, and rectify other obvious errors. I'm also going to add some bulleted highlights to the front of each section to whet your appetites for the content to come! All the new material, I decided to put into the second entry for each arrondissement, entitled 'Additional Photographs'. I've added a new heading to alert you when that new material starts. It will be about new tourist attractions that have opened (like the refurbished ... read more

Highlights · Jazz/rock/classical scene · Shopping on rue Saint-Honoré · New restaurant reviews for 2017 So, here we are - this is absolutely the last blog in the sequence. After 40 weeks, my project of the 20 Mairies of the 20 arrondissements of Paris is now complete, including updates from visits in 2013, 2014, 2017 (work-in-progress) & 2018 (in plan). For me, it has been a veritable voyage of discovery. I hope perhaps, it has been for you, my readers, whether you know Paris very well, or not. My thanks must go to all my models who I captured in some unlikely poses often in some unlikely places and thanks to my many French friends and ex-pats who live in Paris, for their excellent advice and guidance. But, thanks to you too, my readers, and commenters! ... read more

Highlights · Loss of Alsace Lorraine (the first time) · Commune uprising 1871 · How to avoid queues at the Louvre · Where there are 38 bells in the belfry Today And so, I come to my last but one blog and to my last arrondissement. It’s been a long journey, but I hope you have enjoyed reading them as much as I have writing them. I feel I know central Paris much better now. I know where to go and eat, drink and where to party. I know now when to avoid some of the tourist traps; but at the same time, I know which of those tourist pulls over the centuries just has to be seen to be believed. I hope you do, too. And, it goes without saying, even more than before, I ... read more

Highlights · New restaurant reviews for 2017 · More extensive photos of that shopping experience in Gallerie Vivienne In this chapter, I include a few miscellaneous photos from various parts of the 2nd arrondissement. Rue Reamur sports some stunning domes and cupolas on some quite ordinary buildings. There are some more pictures of the Bourse and some more around Place des Petits Pères, including the frontage of Chez Georges, rated highly by Alexander Lobrano, but sadly not yet visited by me. As for Gallerie Vivienne, you just have to pop in: here sumptuous architecture, delicate mosaics and grand statues have been wonderfully preserved, and the shops and restaurants are seriously chic and expensive. Jean-Paul Gaultier opened his first boutique here and it remains his flagship, and fashionistas will want to check out the cool designs of ... read more

Highlights · The Bourse – the old stock exchange · Le Vaudeville brasserie · Rues Montmartre and Montorgeuil Today The Mairie of the 2nd is a rather low-key building situated down an old but rather narrow street - the rue de la Banque. As a result, it’s rather difficult to photograph, but it is quite a nice building all the same, but not as grand as that for the 3rd, or for the 1st for that matter. Like the 17th arrondissement, the 2nd is a bit of Cinderella district. When I look at the photos that I have taken in the 2nd, apart from the Mairie (town hall) of course, the most substantial public buildings are the National Library and the Bourse (or stock exchange) since 1826. Except, of course, it’s not the stock exchange any ... read more

Highlights · Some reviews of great restaurants · Re-opening of the Picasso Museum · Re-opening of the Carreau du Temple In the last chapter, we looked at the town hall and its environs. As promised, this week I talk about the local restaurants that Julia and I have visited. The list is mostly drawn from our excellent introduction to Paris cuisine – ‘Hungry for Paris’, by Alexander Lobrano, ISBN 978-0-8129-7683-0, published by Random House. We haven't been let down, yet. Well done, Alex. And, of course, I have included some more pictures of the Mairie of the 3rd, especially as it and the square du Temple were responsible for initiating this whole project. Restaurants Ambassade d'Auvergne, 22 rue Grenier-Saint-Lazare - this cosy, welcoming old auberge is indeed an embassy of Auvergnat cooking - (the bit in ... read more

Highlights · Square du Temple – where this project all started · The street to be seen in – rue de Bretagne · A frightening tower Today Well, this is where it all started. One hot, sunny day in August 2009, I was strolling around the square du Temple for the very first time, thinking how brilliant it was to be living in Paris. Then I happened on the view of the very elegant edifice of the Mairie of the 3rd through the trees with the sparkling water on the pond in the foreground, see photo. In consideration of this very agreeable scene, I had a moment of inspiration, thinking to myself - I wonder what the other 19 town halls are like? And so, this project was born. The town hall of the 3rd borders ... read more

Highlights · Photos of the swirling river · More views of the spectacular Place des Vosges · Very pretty gardens of Hôtel-de-Sens · Ile St. Louis – get away from the crowds · Authentic restaurant reviews, in this difficult very touristy area, (ok, so one is Indian!) Since the River Seine bisects the 4th and separates the islands from the Right Bank, in this section, I focus on the river and the bridges in the 4th and the views from it. In 2014, I hooked up with my old class-mate from the language school Institut Catholique (recommended), Justin, in Place des Vosges before retiring to a nearby hostelry for a catch up. This square was looking magnificent, and also on my trip in April 2017. Nearby, just across the bridge back on the mainland is the ... read more

Highlights · Terrible damage caused by the Commune uprising in 1871 · Photos of Notre Dame · Pompidou Centre – love it or hate it? · Jewish quarter · Cake and coffee shopping Today The Mairie is a majestic building just off the rue Rivoli and a stone’s throw away from the River Seine, so is pretty central to most tourist’s activities. To some extent, its architecture is eclipsed by the Hôtel de Ville just a block away with its grand square, turrets and figures in history, but make sure you see both buildings, as for a couple of reasons, you are very lucky to be seeing them at all!! Both buildings were heavily shelled during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 when Paris was under siege. As if this wasn’t bad enough, their ruins in a ... read more

Highlights · A Roman amphitheatre · The grand mosque of Paris · Some new 2018 restaurant reviews This week I focus on the little forgotten corners of the 5th arrondissement, and as the UK Brexit vote approaches, some fun references to the main parties and viewpoints. So, for that classic bistro style French lunch - try Les Pipos just off the place Panthéon. The marrow bones and toast make a delicious starter and the fresh oysters from Brittany are a must on Thursdays. Or, if that's not your scene and you want something a bit more British in style (feeling homesick, are we?), there's always the look-a-like London pub, 'The Bombardier', serving real ale and Guinness, of course. What's more it's right on the place Pantheon itself! Over towards the 6th and near the Jardins du ... read more
